Hand Pieced Kansas Dugout Quilt

A Finished Quilt
Hand Pieced Kansas Dugout Quilt - Japanese Fabrics | © Red Pepper Quilts 2020

Finally an update! March 2020 came along and everything changed and this new "normal" is difficult to come to terms with for everyone. I know that here in Australia we are in a very fortunate position with relatively few Corona Virus cases, a health care system that has had a chance to prepare, and now a gradual easing out of restrictions. We are so very aware of how lucky we are and I am practising daily to be that glass half full kind of person.

I have been home. My family have been at home! I have worked at home for the last 10 years, so staying home has not been difficult for me. Having to share my "work" space with my family however has proven to be refreshing! It may even be that my sew-jo has returned. I have stitched, especially in the evenings, and have several finished quilts to share with you. Taking photos is still a huge stumbling block in updating my blog, but yesterday was a good photo day.

This is my finished Kansas Dugout Quilt predominantly made with fabrics from my Japanese fabric stash. The fabric pieces for this quilt were cut at the same time as the fabric pieces for my Japanese Stash Buster Quilt - way back in November 2019. It's not often that I plan ahead and cut fabric for multiple quilts at the same time. The quilt top was hand pieced (running stitch). The last stitch was completed on Christmas Eve 2019. (The next day I started hand piecing my Trip Around the World Quilt).

Kansas Dugout Quilt Block | © Red Pepper Quilts 2020

This quilt is pieced in blocks as pictured above, then blocks are joined into rows by adding additional joining squares. I pieced 120 such individual blocks, then pieced blocks together into rows, and then joined rows. I have previously machine pieced several Kansas Dugout Quilts and have made available a step by step tutorial: here. I hand pieced this quilt rather than machine pieced it for no other reason than the joy of stitching with needle in hand.

The quilt has been machine quilted with straight edge to edge lines of stitching. Nothing fancy. And for the back of the quilt I have used a hoarded piece of fabric from the Lighhearted collection by Ayumi Mills for Kokka Fabrics (2014) - super fancy - and very satisfying to sew from stash.

QuiltLite Batting | © Red Pepper Quilts 2020

Batting. I have again used QuiltLite batting to layer this quilt. Quiltlite is a woven cotton fabric similar to a loosely woven flannel fabric as pictured above; it offers the presence of batting without adding bulk or loft. I have had lots of questions about this batting, especially from overseas quilters, and unfortunately I too cannot find it available online other than here in Australia. Most of my local fabric/patchwork stores carry it where it is known as QuiltLite.

Sunday Stash #381 Kerchief Girls by Kei Fabrics

Kerchief Girls for Kei Fabrics ~ Japanese Fabric | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
Kerchief Girls for Kei Fabrics
Reprinted and available exclusively from Miss Matatabi.
They're back and I am super pleased that these fabrics have been reprinted. Kerchief Girls by Kei Fabrics ~ a Japanese fabric house ~ were available in five different color ways when I first started blogging in 2009. Since then these popular prints have become somewhat of a treasure hunt, hard to find to say the least, and when snippets popped up on Ebay or Etsy they were priced accordingly.

Over the years I have often used pieces of my small stash of original Kerchief Girls in my quilts rather than hoarding it. I am therefore rather pleased to see that these adorable prints are once again available. My stash has been abundantly replenished in every color way including the two new colors yellow and aqua ~

Sunday Stash #355 Assorted Japanese Fabrics

I have added a few new Japanese fabrics to my stash in the last few weeks, including fabrics by my favorite Japanese textile designer Suzuko Koseki. These I cannot resists for they are easy to use, and mix well with fabrics from other collections by color , pattern, or style.

Paris Retro Daisies by Suzuko Koseki for Yuwa Fabrics
Groovy 70's Floral prints - Quilt Gate
How good are both these floral prints? I think they are perfect stash additions. There are very few details on the selvage - no more than what I have provided here and that they are printed in Japan. Both designs are printed on a great quality 100% cotton quilting weight fabric bases.

Happy Sweet Collection - Checks
by Yoshiko Jinzenji for Yuwa Fabrics
Also just in is these range of checks by Yoshiko Jinzenji. These are excellent fabric stash basics in muted colors that I know I will be able to easily incorporate into my quilt projects. You can't have too many good basics ...

A Color Splash Quilt - The Finished Quilt

A Color Splash Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2016

I am so in love with these bright colors! This quilt has turned out great and it has made my day to be able to share a whole lot of photos with you here. I so wish you could see (and touch) the actual quilt for when you reduce the a quilt to a 10 inch square - or smaller still when viewing on a device - I do think that the impact is not the same, and I repeatedly hear from my customers that the actual quilt is even better than the photos! That's always nice to hear.

I think you may already know how much I love the fabrics that I have used to make this quilt. Many are from my stash of Japanese import fabrics by popular Japanese designers like Suzuko Koseki and Atsuko Matsuyuama, but also included are prints by Cotton + Steel and stash basics like dots, stripes, gingham, and small scale prints in a range of bold colors.

To finish this quilt I have given it my usual backing and binding fabric treatment ~ newsprint fabric from the Story Collection by Carrie Bloomston for the backing fabric with black/white stripe fabric by Timeless Treasures for binding:

Sunday Stash #250 - Japanese Fabrics and More

A bundle of Japanese fabric arrived this week from Miss Matatabi. Most of the fabrics in this bundle are either by popular Japanese textile designers Suzuko Koseki or Atsuko Matsuyama, all featuring text, and all are excellent quality quilting cottons with a lovely soft hand.
Flour Sack (left) and Newspaper (right) by Suzuko Koseki for Yuwa
Both these text fabrics - Flour Sack and Newsprint by Suzuko Koseki - are smaller scale reprints of previously released fabrics by Suzuko. The text on the Newsprint fabric is tiny and reading it does test my eyesight, but makes for a great background fabric.
Sew+Love+Give by Kinkame in Pink and White
30's Collection - Sweet Recipe by Atsuko Matsuyama for Yuwa
My love for text fabric continues (and several of these are also great for low volume projects).

Suzuko Koseki and Atsuko Matsuyuma fabrics available from:
Miss Matatabi (Etsy) - be sure to also check out the clearance section. 40% off everything in the clearance section. Whilst stocks last.

DS Fabrics (Denyse Schmidt) ~ Picadilly for Fabric Traditions
Picadilly by DS Fabrics for Fabric Traditions
Also arriving this week is the new collection by DS Fabrics (Denyse Schmidt) ~ Picadilly in a blue/green color palette made available only from Spotlight Stores in Australia. Good news for Australian quilters and sewists, not so good for everyone else! The blues and greens are vibrant and the quality of the fabrics is good; I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use these fabrics in my quilts. How good is that green?

Sunday Stash #196 - Japanese Import Fabrics

This bundle of fabric arrived earlier in the week and was promptly cut into for my Economy Block - I Spy Quilt.

Peek-A-Boo Dot by Suzuko Koseki

Suzuko Koseki is a quilter, teacher, author, and fabric designer from Japan. Suzuko's work is great source of inspiration and I seek out her fabrics from far and wide.

The Peek-A-Boo Dot collection (dots measure approximately 2.5 inches in diameter) is a more recently released range by Suzuko Koseki and is currently available from:

From top right:
Soap and Perfume Labels in Black/White by Suzuko Koseki
Yuwa Sixty Eight Collection - Sewing Notions in Red
Yuwa Live Life Collection - Labels
Yuwa Sixty Eight Collection - Cross Stitch French Bonjour
Yuwa Live Life - Shoes and Hats
Yuwa Sixty Eight Collection - Sewing Notions in Black

I also couldn't resist this bundle of text fabrics. These text and notion prints are 100% quilting cottons and are great low-volume fabrics as well as stash basics.  I just love the current availability and variety of text and notion fabrics.  There's no such thing as too much fabric!

Enjoy Sunday!
