A Color Splash Quilt - The Finished Quilt

A Color Splash Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2016

I am so in love with these bright colors! This quilt has turned out great and it has made my day to be able to share a whole lot of photos with you here. I so wish you could see (and touch) the actual quilt for when you reduce the a quilt to a 10 inch square - or smaller still when viewing on a device - I do think that the impact is not the same, and I repeatedly hear from my customers that the actual quilt is even better than the photos! That's always nice to hear.

I think you may already know how much I love the fabrics that I have used to make this quilt. Many are from my stash of Japanese import fabrics by popular Japanese designers like Suzuko Koseki and Atsuko Matsuyuama, but also included are prints by Cotton + Steel and stash basics like dots, stripes, gingham, and small scale prints in a range of bold colors.

To finish this quilt I have given it my usual backing and binding fabric treatment ~ newsprint fabric from the Story Collection by Carrie Bloomston for the backing fabric with black/white stripe fabric by Timeless Treasures for binding:

I do love my scrappy quilts! The fabrics used for this quilt range from small scale 30's prints to modern large scale designs, Japanese imports, designer quilting cottons and stash basics (dots, checks, stripes etc), in all the colors of the rainbow and more. Some of the feature fabrics, like the boots, the deer, the larger scale text fabric, really draw in your eye, and on closer inspection there is still more to see.

I have quilted this quilt by ditch-stitching the seam lines that join the blocks, as well as a single diagonal line of stitching through all of the units. Very simple, functional rather than decorative quilting adding a lovely soft texture to the quilt and allowing the fabrics and the quilt design to be the main feature of the quilt.

For the back of the quilt I have used my current favorite backing fabric ~ Newsprint from the Paint Collection by Carrie Bloomston; a fabric that complements many of quilts, especially the scrappy ones, and I have matched it with my signature black/white stripe fabric by Timeless Treasures.

Quarter Log Cabin Scrap Quilt ~ Work in Progress

Quarter Log Cabin Scrap Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2015

For this week's project I once again turned to my fabric stash. Working from stash makes so very happy. I like to use my fabrics, even the rare and sought after ones that I know I won't be able to replace. I know, I have enough fabric to last this life time, and with new fabrics coming in all the time, it is definitely a use it, or lose it situation. It's a matter of keeping on going and making the quilts ...

Thankfully, it is a task I relish. And scrap quilts are at the top of my list; in this instance by scrap quilt I mean a quilt made from many different fabrics to create an all over "scrappy" look, rather than fabrics that have been rescued from the scrap bin. The fabrics used for this quilt are all from stash, and range from small scale 30's prints to modern large scale designs, Japanese imports, designer quilting cottons and stash basics (dots, checks, stripes etc), in all the colors of the rainbow and more.

The quilt design is simple, alternating a patchwork square with a small quarter log cabin block. Lots of repetitive sewing. Cut, sew, press and repeat. This quilt is more about the fabrics than the design, although I do think that the little log cabins and the white "center" squares give the quilt a fresh, and modern look, as well as a sense of calm.

Improvised Quarter Log Cabin Quilt

Loominous ~ Quarter Log Cabin Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2015
Improvised Quarter Log Cabin Quilt
featuring Loominous by Anna Maria Horner
A continuation of a recent theme ~ Quarter Log Cabin Blocks ~ but this time big blocks, unstructured and as free form as I can manage, for improvised is not my preferred piecing style. Having said that, once I got started and cut into my bundle of fabric, I thoroughly immersed myself in the process, and truly loved every moment.

I really wanted to make a quilt to feature these beautiful yarn dyed fabrics, and my challenge was to make the most of the limited fabric that I had on hand (a fat quarter bundle), whilst balancing the colors of the simple and large scale blocks.

These yard dyed fabrics are exquisite and aptly named Loominous. I have added detail to the fabric and the quilt by quilting edge to edge vertical lines, irregularly spaced, and with thread that varied both in color and in weight (for top thread I have used either 50 weight or 28 weight  thread, and for bobbin thread I have used 50 weight thread throughout).

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric from the Mochi Collection by Rashida Coleman Hale for Cotton + Steel,  which complements the colors of the quilt perfectly.

And the binding is pieced from strips of fabric trialled and discarded during the design process as well as smaller leftover pieces of fabric. I do love a scrappy binding.
