Work In Progress Wednesday

A Spring Quilt!  I am so very ready for a change in seasons.  As much as I do love Winter (the Australian kind of no-snow Winter) I am ready for more sunshine, longer daylight and outdoor living. We have already had some gorgeous Spring days and I have enjoyed some time outside soaking up the rays ... with a knitting project that has been on the needles since early this year and which now is finished (more of that soon).

And so my quilt in progress this week is my Spring Fling Quilt - chilly mornings, blue skies, delightful sunshine, gentle breeze, grass so green and blossoms on trees ...

400+ patchwork squares each measuring 2 inches x 2 inches.  Simple. But it is my favorite way to spend time at the sewing machine.

Do what makes you happy.

Sunday Stash #198 Florence by Denyse Schmidt

Florence by Denyse Schmidt
Florence is the latest collection by Denyse Schmidt for FreeSpirit Fabrics.  The vintage inspired collection consists of 26 fabrics in a warm and cool color palette; numerous prints indeed do remind me of feedsack/vintage fabric. Here are some my favorites (I am really taken with the blue/green palette):

I like the inclusion of the plaid prints as well as the shirting-like dainty stripes. Several of these fabrics have already been cut into, in particular the four-dots design (top fabric in the above image and fourth fabric in the image below - which has been used to bind this quilt.)
Florence by Denyse Schmidt is in stores now and available from:
The Fat Quarter Shop
StashModern Fabric (Etsy)
Westwood Acres (Etsy)
Fabric Worm

A Low Volume Scrappy Strip Quilt

A Finished Quilt
A scrappy strip quilt :: scrappy in the sense that I have used a variety of fabrics :: less scrappy is the layout with a regular 2 inch wide strip throughout. Perhaps not strictly low volume either, although it does read that way to me.

I am pleasantly surprised with how well these very different fabrics all play together and convey a sense of calm and a stillness despite the mix of pattern and color.  Some of the feature fabrics used include:

Again I have quilted the quilt with a straight lines but this time a set of horizontal lines just 1 inch apart and a set of 2 vertical lines running edge to edge through every second strip of fabric.  For the quilt back I have used Pam Kitty Love Floral Bouquet yardage which is perfect for this quilt and is a fabric that I will need to re-stock as I rather adore it.

BINDING :: Squared Elements by Art Gallery Fabrics
(picture overload!)
The same can be said for the binding fabric - Squared Elements by Art Gallery Fabrics - a fabric which I have previously used for quilt binding although in a different colorway .   L o v e  i t  ... including all of the recently released new colors.
This quilt is for sale and I have updated my Etsy Store.

The listing for this quilt is here:  Modern Patchwork Strip Quilt

Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful weekend,

Low Volume Strip Quilt [workinprogress]

Looking back through my blog archives it is obvious why I needed to work with my low volume fabric stash this week: it has been months(!) since my last low volume patchwork/quilt and I have been itching to get back to some serious low volume fabric play.

This quilt top came together relatively quickly as I have been cutting and collecting 2 inch wide strips of fabric - in varying lengths - of fabrics that I have worked with (not just low volume fabrics) for several months now. These strips were not cut with a specific quilt design in mind, but were simply ready and waiting for inspiration to strike. [I have also cut many 1.5 inch wide fabric strips in preparation for a possible string quilt].

I have taken the anything goes approach with the fabric selection for this quilt, choosing low volume fabric strips as well fabric strips that are much louder; vibrant in design and vivid in color. I am not disappointed with the result ... it is calm and busy all at the same time.  Best of all is that the fabrics are all from stash.

Lots of pictures today.

You already know what I will be doing the next few days if things go according to plan. Basting. Quilting. Binding.

Thank you for stopping by,
Rita

Save the Scraps!

Do you remember this stack of "discarded" half square triangle units from my Flock of Flying Geese II Quilt made earlier this month?  Waste not, want not. Right?

So I made a quilt.  I first spent some time trimming the above stack, with most Half Square Triangle (HST) units comfortably measuring 3 inches x 3 inches. There were however numerous HST units that were smaller and didn't make the 3 inch cut. Those units were trimmed to measure 2.5 inches x 2.5 inches.

I tried not to over think the layout and was immediately happy with the somewhat alternating rows of large and small half square triangles units as well as the color play.

Quilted with an overall 1 inch grid.

For the back of the quilt I have used a text print from the Love Notes collection by Echo Park (Andover Fabrics) - words to live and love by. For the quilt binding I have used a fabric from the very recently released Florence collection by Denyse Schmidt - it is called Four Dots in Carnelian.

I have listed this quilt in my Etsy Store.
All of the listing details here: Modern Patchwork Baby and Toddler Quilt

Not only are some of the fabrics used for this quilt reclaimed vintage linens but as discarded/leftover scraps they have once again been re-purposed and ready for a new adventure. Reclaim, recycle, re-use.

Sunday Stash #196 - Japanese Import Fabrics

This bundle of fabric arrived earlier in the week and was promptly cut into for my Economy Block - I Spy Quilt.

Peek-A-Boo Dot by Suzuko Koseki

Suzuko Koseki is a quilter, teacher, author, and fabric designer from Japan. Suzuko's work is great source of inspiration and I seek out her fabrics from far and wide.

The Peek-A-Boo Dot collection (dots measure approximately 2.5 inches in diameter) is a more recently released range by Suzuko Koseki and is currently available from:

From top right:
Soap and Perfume Labels in Black/White by Suzuko Koseki
Yuwa Sixty Eight Collection - Sewing Notions in Red
Yuwa Live Life Collection - Labels
Yuwa Sixty Eight Collection - Cross Stitch French Bonjour
Yuwa Live Life - Shoes and Hats
Yuwa Sixty Eight Collection - Sewing Notions in Black

I also couldn't resist this bundle of text fabrics. These text and notion prints are 100% quilting cottons and are great low-volume fabrics as well as stash basics.  I just love the current availability and variety of text and notion fabrics.  There's no such thing as too much fabric!

Enjoy Sunday!

Economy Block - I Spy - Quilt

Economy Block Quilt
80 Blocks
720 fabric pieces
200+ different fabrics

I am so pleased to have finished my Economy Block Quilt.  I have loved working on it; working from stash and patchwork piecing really are my favorite way to spend my "working" hours. The quilt consists of 80 Economy Blocks (Square in a Square Blocks) with a center fabric that features a fun novelty such as an animal, creature, accessory, notion or otherwise ~ some of these fabrics are now hard to find and sought after. There's a lot to see and there are stories to tell.

For the back of the quilt I have used a print from the Geekly Chic collection by Amy Adams (Riley Blake). This quirky fabric features a range of glasses in black and white and complements the I Spy theme of this quilt.  The image below also shows the quilting grid. I have stitched horizontal, vertical as well as diagonal quilting lines, some of which have been stitched in the ditch (in the seam line).

And although I did audition several binding fabrics this scrappy quilt was screaming for a black/white stripe binding fabric.  I couldn't ignore it. It just had to be.
I have listed this quilt in my Etsy Store.
You can see all of the listing details here:  Modern - I Spy - Patchwork Quilt.
