Delectable Mountains Scrap Quilt

Work in Progress.

Scrap quilts and simple patchwork piecing are my absolute favorite and I do like to try my hand at different traditional blocks. I have loved working on this Delectable Mountains Scrap Quilt top.  With its numerous patchwork pieces the Delectable Mountains block - a traditional quilt block - isn't exactly a quick patchwork fix, but it also is not as difficult or as intimidating as it may appear to be.

This quilt top is inspired by the Rummage Quilt Pattern by Stephanie Dunphy (which I purchased way by in 2016 and has been on my "to make" list since then) but as often is the case when I use a pattern, I have resized the block - I have made the block smaller - as well as played with the layout and added Half Square Triangle units. I also found the Delectable Mountain Quilt Block tutorial by the Fat Quarter Shop (a free pattern download) very useful as the process includes over-sizing components of the block and trimming back units for accuracy. (The Fat Quarter Shop block tutorial is for an 8½ inch block. The Delectable Mountains block size for my quilt is 5½" x 5½" - including seam allowances).

I have alternated the Delectable Mountains Block with a Half Square Triangle unit and I have randomly chosen fabrics from stash (most are stash favorites!) while still ensuring that there is sufficient contrast between the blocks and block units. I think you'll recognize quite a few of the fabrics used in this quilt top. Some of the fabrics are from more recent fabric collection releases, others have been part of my stash for quite some time. Some are "modern", and others are reproductions prints. Many are fabric stash basics (dots, checks, stripes). They all just work together ...

I have had a wonderful week working on this quilt top; the fabric/color play was so much fun! Piecing and trimming to size all those small half square triangle units can be tedious, but I tackled five blocks at a time to keep it interesting, and to feel like I was making good progress.

Bright Hopes Quilt - Color My World

A Finished Quilt
Bright Hopes Quilt - Color My World | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #brighthopesquilt #scrapquilt #patchwork #redpepperquilts

Color, color, everywhere! Fabric is my creative medium of choice and the more colorful my workspace the better. I find it hard to restrain myself and like to put every last fabric scrap to good use. This Bright Hopes quilt was the perfect opportunity to work with both ~ color + fabric scraps.

The fabrics used are many and varied and range from stash basics (dots, gingham, stripes, checks) to novelty fabrics that have been fussy cut to feature a print/design. If you stop by here regularly you may have seen some of these fabrics before, or better still, you might spot fabrics that you too have in your stash. Some are older prints, some have only very recently arrived. All are much loved!

The quilt has been quilted with a combination of straight vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines. I use a quilting guide attached to the walking foot to assist with keeping the quilting lines nice and straight (by running the guide along the seam lines and previous quilting lines). No lines were marked!

For the back of the quilt I have used my go-to backing fabric: Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston ....

.... and I have matched it with my signature black/white stripe fabric for the quilt binding.

Bright Hopes Quilt - Color My World

Work in Progress
Bright Hopes Quilt - Color My World - tutorial available | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #scrapquilt #quiltblocktutorial #patchwork

Having previously enjoyed making a Bright Hopes Quilt in low volume (light/white) fabrics, it seems only fitting that I would go on to make a Bright Hopes Quilt using all colors of the rainbow. The Bright Hopes Quilt Block is a traditional patchwork block, and this block is not only a perfect introduction to sewing a block/quilt with partial-sewn seams, but it is also perfect for scrap busting. And I have plenty of fabric scraps! (Bright Hopes Block tutorial available here)

Admittedly, in addition to sorting through my scrap bins I have also cut many pieces of fabric from stash. Some of those fabric pieces have been fussy cut to feature a print/design. For most of the individual Bright Hopes block that I made for this quilt I have focused on a single color (like blue or red) or analogous colors (like pink/red, yellow/green or blue/grey). The color blocks have then been randomly arranged for an overall scrappy look.

For the center of each of the Bright Hopes blocks I have used Robert Kaufman Essex Yarn Dyed Homespun in Natural (55% Linen / 45% Cotton). It is a lovely weight fabric to work with alongside standard quilting cottons and it has a very natural linen look about it.

I have thoroughly enjoyed working on this colorful quilt top. There's something very soothing and calming about working from stash and repetitively piecing block after block. It is a joy to watch a quilt top come together as you start sewing row after row of blocks. And despite the many prints and colors, it all works!

One Patch Quilt - Row Houses

Work in Progress.
One Patch Quilt - Row Houses | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #onepatchquilt #scrapquilt #patchworkquilt

A new week and a new project! This quilt is everything that I love about fabric and patchwork. I love a scrappy quilt and working from stash ... I love working with contrasting - light/dark - fabrics especially playing with low volume fabrics ... and I love a simple patchwork design. I also enjoy a challenge and working with inset seams does exactly that.

One-Patch Quilts (Twenty to Make)

This little book - One-Patch Quilts (Twenty to Make) by Carolyn Forster - caught my eye at the Melbourne Quilt Convention in April. At the time I was working on my Scrappy Apple Core Quilt and the image of the Apple Core Quilt on the cover of the book made me stop and flick through the pages of the book. In doing so I spotted a project with the cutest rows of houses and knew I needed to add it to my list of quilts to make. And so this book came home with me. It is only a little book, but it is a gem for inspiration!

One Patch Quilt - Row Houses | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #onepatchquilt #scrapquilt #patchworkquilt

A one-patch quilt is a quilt made from a single repeating shape and featured in the book is inspiration for 20 such projects - each a different patch - in order of difficulty, starting with a square and ending with an apple core shape. Further shapes included are half rectangle triangles, diamonds, kites, half and whole hexagons, jewel, and apple core shapes. The instructions are basic however if you are a sewer with some quilt making experience, and better still experience with inset seams, this is the a great book for ideas and inspiration.

On each project page there is a template for the basic shape at actual size. Rather than photocopy the shape and use a paper template to cut my fabric pieces, I resized my "house" shape so that I could quickly and easily cut a rectangular fabric piece with rotary cutter and ruler, then lob off the corners with a 90 degree angle ruler. I then also marked a ¼" seam line with a pencil around the shape to assist with sewing the inset seams that join the "rooftops" of the shapes together. A time consuming task but worth it for the sake of accuracy.

This quilt with it's many inset seams is not as difficult to sew together as it may look. It does involve a lot of stop/start sewing but you're still only sewing a straight line, and starting and stopping at a marked spot. Furthermore with this quilt design you are only ever working with two horizontal rows at a time when sewing the inset seams (rather than wrangling the whole quilt top under the machine). Once the "rooftop" rows are sewn together (a light row of houses + a dark row of houses), the remainder seams are all long straight seams.
