Anna Maria Horner Hexagon Quilt

A Finished Quilt.

Anna Maria Horner Hexagon Quilt ® Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Here's one that I made earlier! I finished this quilt top back in March of this year. It seems like only yesterday, and also a lifetime ago. Back then we were living in a covid "normal" world where you could leave your home and visit friends and family. Right now, we're back in a covid lockdown situation whilst we wait for the largely unvaccinated population to get vaccinated. There is plenty of time to sew, and I have been taking advantage of that, plus this week I have dusted off my camera and taken photos of several finished quilts and work in progress.

I love all of Anna Maria Horner's fabric collections and recall how excited I was to get my hands on the Chocolate Lollipop collection (my first AMH collection) back in 2008. Since then I have selectively added more collections to my stash, but despite my love for these prints I find that the larger scale prints don't get used too often in my quilts.

Keen to use my AMH stash I thought to combine them all into the one quilt and paper piecing hexagons together continues to give me much joy. Admittedly I purchased a big bundle of AMH fat sixteenths (from Polka Dot Tea Fabrics) which really helped to round out my collection. The more the merrier.

I have used Aurifil 28wt thread (the gray spool) for quilting (28wt top thread - 40wt thread in the bobbin), and I have used a range of colors - from red and purple, to pink and yellow, to quilt this quilt; changing the top thread regularly and randomly choosing a color. The edge to edge vertical lines are spaced 1 inch apart and there are no two lines of stitching along side one another that are the same thread color.

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric (Jardin de Paris in Peony) from the Menagerie collection by Rifle Paper Co for Cotton + Steel. This is a beautiful floral fabric which complements the scale of prints used in the quilt top as well as the tone.

The quilt binding is also an Anna Maria Horner fabric from an older collection - I cannot seem to find the exact details. But it is dark blue with a large scale floral design which breaks up nicely in the narrow segments of the binding.

Echinacea ~ Floral Retrospective

Carefully handpicked from several of Anna Maria's previous collections these prints sit beautifully alongside one another as well  as other styles of fabric, including vintage, modern, and everything in between. The Social Climber design (see above) is one of my favorite prints and I still have a small piece in my scrap bin. Every time I rummage through my scrap bin it sparks a fond memory and have wished for just a little more ...
