Sunday Stash #395 A Bundle of This and That

Sunday Stash ~ This and That | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

While fat quarter bundles of complete fabric collections are a favorite precut I do also regularly choose and purchase a few selected prints from a range. I like to think that I have a fairly good understanding of the kind of prints that I reach for most often, and choose fabrics based on design and color, and sometimes "just because".  These are a random bundle of such prints ~

This week's selection of fabric is from three different fabric collections, and as pictured from top to bottom of the pretty bundle the first six fabrics are from the Hello Jane collection by Allison Harris for Windham Fabrics. I love the low volume Lemon prints - especially in the natural yellow colorway - and rather like the floral design in all three colorways.

HELLO JANE BY ALLISON HARRIS is available from:

The next three fabrics are a single design from the Meriwether collection by Amy Gibson for Windham Fabrics. This print is a great stash basic and I especially like the purple colorway. I still the "right" hue of purple difficult to find and harder still to use it in my quilts! But I am working on it. (I also featured another two text fabrics from this same collection in my Sunday Stash #389 blog post).

Last but not least is this pretty gingham bundle is from the Dear Little World Dreaming Doll collection by Quilt Gate. Gingham always! I cannot resist. Purchased from Sew Stitching Happy (Etsy) and available in 5 different colorways.

English Paper Piecing: Liberty Star Pillow

Liberty Stars Pillow Cover - An English Paper Piecing Project from Quilting on the Go by Sharon Burgess | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

As promised, today a gallery of photos of my Liberty Star Pillow Cover based on a pattern from the book Quilting on the Go: English Paper Piecing by Sharon Burgess. The Star Pillow pattern is an English Paper Piecing design using just one shape - a diamond. I made several more star blocks then the pattern required and as a result my pillow measurements (and lack of borders) differ to that in the book.

Similar to the Star Pillow in Sharon's book I have used Liberty of Tana Lawn fabric for the stars. Not having used Liberty fabric to paper piece before I was hesitant, but as always, nothing ventured, nothing gained. It seems however that there was no need for concern. In fact, the fabrics - including the Oakshott background fabric - were lovely to work with. The needle and thread glided through the fabric layers with ease, and the fabric withstood the glue basting and paper removal process much, much better than I had anticipated.

Quilting Thread: Aurifil 28wt cotton thread (color #6725).

I have quilted the top of the pillow cover (layered with low loft cotton batting and a cotton backing fabric) by stitching alongside both sides of  all seam lines. I have used Aurifil 28wt thread for extra stitch definition. I was keen to ditch stitch - at least for some of the seams - but hesitated to do so in fear of the pressed open seams popping their stitches and being left with a hole in the patchwork fabric. That wasn't worth the risk!

For the back of the pillow I have used a barkcloth fabric from the Time Warp collection by Jessica Jones. I adore this fabric and it has been in my stash waiting for the right project to come along. This was it! I have used an iron-on interfacing fabric to add rigidity to the barkcloth fabric and a zip is hidden under the overlapping flap on back of the pillow. The pillow form/insert can therefore be easily removed before washing the pillow cover.

My pillow is not a standard pillow size and as such I struggled to find the right size pillow insert. But then I realized that I had on hand a square pillow insert the same width of the pillow (23" x 23"), which I simply made 5 inches shorter on one end by gently moving all the filling to one side of the insert, stitching a new seam line 5 inches from the original edge and ta-da! ...a custom made pillow insert in less than 5 minutes.

This was such a fun project to make. I really can't wait to start another EPP project but first I have to finish my Wagon Wheel Quilt. It is so close to being done!

Book Review and Giveaway! Quilting on the Go by Sharon Burgess

Quilting on the Go: English Paper Piecing is Sharon Burgess' debut publication for Tuva Publishing. In her book Sharon shares her love for English Paper Piecing and fussy cutting. The book is a comprehensive resource guide for English Paper Piecing and includes chapters on technique (glue basting, preparing papers, joining pieces, strip cutting, hand stitching, and of course fussy cutting). All the EPP basics available at your fingertips.

In addition, the book includes step by step patterns for a number of projects ranging from small ~ mini quilt, cushion, bunting, zipper pouch, journal cover, pincushion and needle keeper, and placemat ~ to bigger projects like a table runner and quilts. All of which involve English Paper Piecing.

Sharon's Celestial Star Quilt (pictured below) is simply magnificent and this original design is also included in the book, complete with detailed instructions and diagrams for all of the units, and templates for quilters keen to cut their own papers. Complete laser cut paper pieces kits are available for purchase separately for this and several other projects in Sharon's book.

As soon as I received my copy of the book for review my fingers were itching to start a project. Having yet to finish my current EPP project I have no business starting another, however a small project doesn't count, right? Here is my version of Sharon's Star Cushion ~ I couldn't stop at just making a few stars and so my cushion turned out a little bigger ....

I LOVED making this cushion cover; it provided me with the perfect excuse to sit and sew during several rather cold and wintery days here in Melbourne. I have used Liberty of London Tana Lawn for the stars and for the background fabric I have used beautiful Oakshott cotton from the Scandinavia range in Stockholm (grey); a match made in fabric heaven. I will publish more photos and all the details of my Star Pillow in a separate blog post later this week.

Echinacea ~ Floral Retrospective

Carefully handpicked from several of Anna Maria's previous collections these prints sit beautifully alongside one another as well  as other styles of fabric, including vintage, modern, and everything in between. The Social Climber design (see above) is one of my favorite prints and I still have a small piece in my scrap bin. Every time I rummage through my scrap bin it sparks a fond memory and have wished for just a little more ...

A Flying Geese Rockpool Quilt

A Finished Quilt.
A Flying Geese Rockpool Quilt ~ Rockpool fabric by Jodie Carleton | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

As promised in my Sunday Stash blog post from earlier this month featuring the Rockpool fabric collection, today I am pleased to show you what I turned the FQ bundle that Jodie sent me. Jodie Carleton (from Vintage RicRac) commissioned me to make a quilt with her brand new fabric line ~ Rockpool for Ella Blue Fabrics ~ for her booth at Spring Quilt Market in May this year.

The Rockpool collection features five unique designs each in five different color ways. The colors are pastel soft, the fabrics with a white background are a sparkling white, and the prints feature coastal life elements including seagulls, whales, starfish and even a few not-so-scary sharks. To highlight the prints I have added several solid fabrics (Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton) and decided that the Flying Geese block was the perfect unit to celebrate the fabric designs.

In addition, I have added numerous spiky triangle blocks to add another element of interest. These blocks were foundation paper pieced (using EQ7 - quilt design software - to draft up the block). These blocks kind of remind me of stringy plant life or seaweed found floating in the ocean and indeed rockpools.
