This week has flown by! The lead up to Christmas is such a busy time of the year and I was concerned that I may have set myself too many tasks to complete this week. Basting, quilting, and binding this quilt was on my to-do list and I am happy to have ticked those tasks off. Done, done, and done. And I couldn't be happier with how this quilt turned out.

The fabrics used for this quilt are predominantly from the most recent collection by Kim Kight called Yours Truly for Cotton + Steel (due for release next month). Although not my usual color palette I have loved working with these colors and prints and enjoyed contrasting the prints with Kona Cotton solid fabrics, shot cottons by Oakshott Fabrics, and linen blend fabrics.

I have quilted the quilt with edge to edge straight lines; first creating a foundation of grid lines by ditch stitching all horizontal seam lines and then ditch stitching all vertical seam lines. I then added additional vertical lines of stitching - using a walking foot with quilting guide - just 1 inch apart. For the back of the quilt I have used a single floral print on a soft pink background from the Cookie Book collection also by Kim Kight for Cotton + Steel.

For the binding I have used one of my favorite Cotton + Steel prints from the Lucky Strikes collection (again by Kim Kight) called Clothesline Floral. This is a gorgeous print - such an unusual color - and I love how Cotton + Steel collections, from current and prior releases, all work so beautifully together.

In preparation for Christmas I am going to take a few days away from my sewing machine and my blog, but will be back with more late next week. I have been working on a hand piecing project for a few months now and once the Christmas rush is over I plan to spend some time with needle in hand, slow sewing, and enjoying the long, warm days of Summer.

Wishing all of my readers a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Yours Truly ~ A Flying Geese Quilt

Work in Progress
Yours Truly - Flying Geese Quilt | Work in Progress | © Red Pepper Quilts 2016

Yours Truly by Kim Kight for Cotton + Steel is due is stores in January and I was grateful to snap up a fat quarter bundle (indirectly) from Sample Spree at Quilt Market. Kim and Alexia Marcelle Abegg's fabric collections for C + S have so far been the collections that I have been drawn to the most. Their designs often include prints that are smaller in scale and in a (softer and lighter) color palette that is more suited to my style and preference for fabric. And I love Yours Truly!

Inspired by vintage love-themed fabrics and garments the Yours Truly collection features strawberries, raccoon-like critters, tiny scattered hearts and ribbons, a small scale floral design, and a grid print. The strawberries though ... are the very best! The color palette is warm and includes both saturated colors as well as as several lighter (and brighter) colors including a soft grey, and neon pink.

I was so pleased with my purchase that I cut into the bundle almost immediately - I didn't even take photos of the fabric bundle for a future Sunday Stash blog post! In addition to using almost all of the prints that are part of the Yours Truly collection I have added several more fabrics from previous C + S collections including a red gingham fabric (Checkers), and a floral pink fabric from the Lucky Strike collection also by Kim Kight.

Yours Truly - Flying Geese Quilt
45 inches x 55 inches.
The quilt design is a simple and traditional Flying Geese quilt (each Flying Geese unit measures 3 inches x 5 1/2 inches including seam allowances). I really wanted to highlight the prints by way of contrasting the designs with a solid background fabric and so for the "wings" of the Flying Geese units I have used a number of Robert Kaufman Kona Cottons and Essex Yarn Dyed linen in Flax, as well as Oakshott shot cottons from the Scandinavia collection.

I am really pleased with this quilt top! The colors play so well together and I can't wait to add texture and additional visual interest that comes with quilting, especially when quilting solid fabrics.

Add It Up - Basics 2017
Cotton + Steel

A sneak peek at the new basics Cotton + Steel due to arrive in stores in January 2017. That's soon! Add It Up is a collaborative collection by the Cotton + Steel team featuring little plus symbols printed on a range of solid background fabrics.

The colors clearly complement all Cotton + Steel fabric collections and the small scale design is a perfect stash basic; easy to use for patchwork and work well fabric collecitons from other fabric designers. I again love the inclusion of the plus signs printed on natural - calico - basecloth with tiny flecks of cotton seed for texture and interest.

A Handmade Christmas - Garland Pillow cover

A Handmade Christmas - Garland Pillow Cover | © Red Pepper Quilts 2016

While I have made numerous handmade items for Christmas gift giving I have made very few items that are intended for Christmas decorating despite having several beautiful Christmas fabric collections in my stash! In an effort to work from stash and get into the Christmas spirit this week I have pulled out a favorite Christmas collection - Garland by Cotton + Steel - and have made a pillow cover.

I recently purchased a small kit of paper pieces for English paper piecing (EPP) from my local patchwork store. The design is based on the La Passacaglia Quilt (from the book Millefiori Quilts by Willyne Hammerstein) which features an intricate quilt layout of interlocking rosettes. The kit of paper pieces was for just a single rosette (papers only) which I thought was a great introduction to working with tiny paper pieces and a more complex design. (By the way, Willyne Hammerstein's books are an inspirational resource and I own both Millefiori Quilts and the more recently released Millefiori Quilts 2 - both published by Quiltmania).

I spent quite some time playing with fabric, choosing a contrast background fabric and fussy cutting elements from the fabric to feature. The actual paper piecing took way longer than anticipated and I have a whole new respect for the many quilters that are working on or have made the La Passacaglia Quilt.

Once the rosette was completed and the papers were removed I hand appliqued the rosette on a linen background fabric that I had already quilted (the background fabric was layered with batting and a backing fabric, prior to being quilted). For the back of the pillow cover I have used a canvas fabric also by Cotton + Steel (from the Picnic collection by Melody Miller). The pillow cover also has a zippered side seam for easy insert removal and cleaning. As always, the thought of sewing the zipper was more stressful than the task itself.

This patchwork quilt is all about the fabrics and at the same time it is an excellent scrap and stash buster project. Working from stash is very satisfying and I love pulling out the many fabric "favorites"; working out what does and what doesn't go together, although generally I find that most of my stash plays nicely together. And of course sometimes the fabrics that clash the most make the greatest impact.

Rectangle Checkerboard Quilt | © Red Pepper Quilts 2016

Whilst this quilt was strip pieced I did spend a lot of time and effort into randomizing the patchwork strips so that the eye isn't immediately drawn to the same fabrics that sit alongside one another. All of the fabrics that are fussy cut - the fabrics that feature an animal, bird, chicken, glasses - rather than randomly cut into, have been individually cut and pieced into a strip set. Some strip sets were taken apart and sewn together with pieces of other strip sets. Choosing and cutting fabric, and then piecing the quilt top is my favorite part of the process!

The quilt is quilted by ditch stitching all seam lines. Simple and functional rather than decorative quilting, and at the same time giving the quilt a lovely texture and a very nice drape. For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric from the Strawberry Biscuit collection by Elea Lutz which is a nice variation to my usual quilt back fabric!

But I could not go past using my signature black/white stripe fabric for quilt binding (by Timeless Treasures).
