Another fat quarter bundle that arrived by mail this week - also from Quilt Market - is Collage by Carrie Bloomston.  This collection has previously been a feature here by way of a quilt, but I thought it might be nice (for me) to catalog and for everyone to see detailed images of the fabrics.

Starting with some of my favorites, these typify the collage look for me; the cutting and pasting of glued paper on a surface.  And I like them a little more so because it is a newspaper/text print.

Similarly, I imagine that these newspaper and text prints will be popular fabrics and often used.

There are several favorite prints in this collection, and these collage dots are no exception - I particularly like the center fabric (above) with neutral background.  These three prints are border prints with a row of birds along the printed selvage; therefore by chance only one of my fat quarters features the birds.  But as I really love the simple collage dot I am definitely not complaining!  

Collage by Carrie Bloomston is expected to arrive in the following stores in July 2013.

Briar Rose - A Finished Quilt

It's been a foot on the pedal kind of week, with a flurry of fabric arrivals, cutting, sewing, basting, quilting and finally binding.

Those strawberries are so darn cute!

I was lucky enough to snap up a Fat Quarter bundle of Briar Rose by Heather Ross - an early release from Quilt Market and was so excited to get my hands on it that I cut into it the same day it arrived on my doorstep.  

I have made a simple patchwork quilt using all of the prints from the Briar Rose Collection and have teamed them with a number of matching solid fabrics.

The solid fabrics that I have used are all Robert Kaufman Kona Cottons and include:

• Sour Apple
• Carnation
• Buttercup 
• School Bus

For the back of the quilt I have used a small blue and green dot on a white background (from The Simple Life by Tasha Noel) which complements the colors of the Briar Rose collection and I have quilted the quilt with an all over 1 inch grid.  Although more heavily quilted than most of my previous quilt, the quilt feels light and drapes beautifully.  The quilting texture simply demands to be touched.

For binding I have used an irregular soft pink/white stripe (Straws in Pink - Simpatico by Michelle Engel Benckso).

A Four Day Sewing Hiatus

Last weekend my husband and I traveled to Singapore - for the Sundowner Marathon for my husband, and rest and relaxation for me.  Singapore is beautiful and colorful, the climate warm and humid, the people are friendly and passionate about their food. We did like the locals and made our way around on the train which was not only very affordable but clean and air conditioned.  The shopping?  The shopping was amazing

I snapped numerous photos with my Iphone and it has been been noted that I spend much of my time looking either up or down:

Of course, I also found my way to a Patchwork Store - Quilts 'N Calicoes in Tanglin Mall  and purchased a few fat quarters:

The good news is that whilst I was away my sewing machine was serviced and both my Bernina and I are now ready to focus on some serious stash busting.

Sunday Stash #187 - Lecien Flower Sugar 2013

Flower Sugar 2013 - Lecien

More vintage inspired floral prints by Lecien in green, blue, white, pink, red and yellow.  I have in the past loved working with the Flower Sugar collections, and each year look forward to the new release.  Although similar in style (and easy to blend with other collections) each collection builds upon the previous and I don't think I will have any trouble using these.

And as we've come to expect from Lecien another great range of dots in lots of colorways and several different sizes.  These dots and colors are very user friendly; the perfect stash builder fabric.

First of Infinity Pillows

Weekend stitching.

It was time to get creative with my my stash of First of Infinity by Kumiko Fujita.  I love the vibrant colors of this collection and together with inspiration from the previously mentioned Japanese Magazine (Patchwork Tsushin #174), these log cabin and log cabin variation style pillows came together relatively quickly.

I have included in my project a number of solid fabrics; most are Robert Kaufman Kona Cottons including Black, Mulberry, and Turquoise. Both the yellow and green solid fabrics are from the Pure Organic Solids range - Marigold and Chartreuse. 

I feel I may have been a little heavy handed with the machine quilting with the first pillow (with the Letter B) and also chose a thread for quilting which was heavier (thicker) than what I normally use.  These two factors combined seem to make the quilting more prominent, but the texture is luxurious. I changed quilting thread and style for the second pillow.  

For the back of the pillows I have used a home decorator weight Chevron Print.  The pillows both have a zippered side seam for easy insert removal and cleaning.  Zippers no longer cause anxiety and I have stopped needing to refer to instructions to insert a zipper in a pillow cover, but in case you do I have in the past found this tutorial by Design Sponge very useful.

The pillows are not for sale and have already made their way to the new owner where I am sure they will be much loved.

Folk Modern by Ellen Luckett Baker

A brand new collection by Ellen Luckett Baker and just like Ellen's last collection (Stamped) it is printed on a  cotton/linen blend base - 85% cotton 15% linen.  Although heavier than standard quilting cotton it is soft, and thinner/lighter/less bulky than I had anticipated. 

There are a total of 18 prints that make up the Folk Modern collection - 6 different designs each in three colorways.  

The designs are inspired by American and European folk art and features motifs like tulips (first image above), sawtooth flowers (pictured directly above), horses and fruit trees all in a bright and color palette.

FOLK MODERN by Ellen Luckett Baker is only just starting to arrive in stores. Keep your eye out for this collection here:

A Modern I-Spy Quilt

My Stitches in Pictures and it is picture overload today.

I was supposed to be tidying the growing fabric mountain that was - and still is - threatening to avalanche, but instead was distracted by a number of fabrics that I'd set aside whilst making a previous quilt; a bundle of fabrics in the black/white, blue/green, red and yellow color palette.  

Out came the rotary cutter and soon I was editing my fabric choices, sewing, basting and quilting, and  finally binding.  The design is again a simple 'just squares' patchwork featuring the fabrics and the colors rather than an intricate pattern.  A timeless classic and still a favorite way to piece.

I have quilted this quilt with a 1 inch grid of lines, using a quilting guide attached to my walking foot rather than marking lines on the quilt.  I like to secure the quilting guide firmly in place with a little masking tape so that it cannot wriggle about, and my quilting lines stay straight.

Sunday Stash #185 - First of Infinity by Kumiko Fujita

I am ending the week with a selection of text fabric from the First of Infinity collection by Kumiko Fujita.  And let's hope that it is indeed the first of many more fabric collections by Kumiko because these are so good!
