Mandolin Quilt - Tales of Cloth Quilt Club 2018 - Part 3

A finished Mandolin Quilt! I still LOVE English Paper Piecing (EPP) and I have loved working on my Mandolin Quilt. Every stitch was a joy, and I am not really surprised that it came together so "quickly". I started working on my Mandolin Quilt early in  January and finished it 4 months later. There were many stolen moments with the needle, most often late at night, but also during the day. For me, hand stitching is such a relaxing way to spend my time that I often feel guilty picking up my EPP project during the day, when there are "more productive" tasks that require my attention. I still have to pinch myself that this is my work, and that I get to do what I love to do every day.

The quilt came back from the professional longarm quilter (Karen Terrens from Quilts on Bastings) early last week. I am very pleased with the simple repeat, custom quilting design. I think it is all that this quilt needed; featuring a chain of free-hand daisy like designs on the hexagons which has been repeated throughout, adding detail and interest in a restrained and orderly manner.

For the back of the quilt I have used my go-to backing fabric: Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston. And I have matched it with my signature black/white stripe fabric for the quilt binding. While I usually machine stitch the binding, I did slip stitch the binding of this quilt by hand.

  3. Rita, How do you do it? My goodness, this is such a beautiful piece of art. I hope whoever is fortunate to receive this treasures it for a lifetime. I may just have to try something like this for a future grandchild (because I think it would take me a very long time:-). Cheers.

  7. Your version is gorgeous.......your quilter has done a lovely job too. I love that backing fabric one that I have but haven't used it for my own quilts but for my customers. A perfect binding to frame this lovely piece. I think there are many of us like you are thoroughly enjoying making these blocks.
