I have lots of photos to share with you today of my finished quilt. Simple patchwork quilts continue to be a favorite and making them brings me all the joy. I really do enjoy the process from start to finish, but choosing fabrics and working on a color palette is always a highlight. The actual sewing process that follows is repetitive but I don't mind that at all. In fact I find it quite relaxing, and it is usually at that point that you see your vision for the quilt unfold in front of your eyes.

I have quilted the quilt by ditch stitching all the seam lines, effectively creating a grid of lines 2 1/2 inches apart. I then added an additional set of diagonal lines that cross at the center of all of the "lighter" squares (every second square).

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric from the Tiger Lily collection by Heather Ross. This is one of my favorite prints from this collection. The quality of the fabric is so lovely and it is the perfect yellow. A good yellow fabric, much like the "right" hue of green, can be hard to find. Although (speaking for myself only)  using yellow is trickier than using green.

For the binding I have used a narrow red and white stripe fabric. This particular fabric is from the Ella Blue Basics range - red and white stripe, which I have machine stitched entirely by machine (see machine stitched binding tutorial here).

Essex Yarn Dyed Homespun
by Robert Kaufman Fabrics
55% linen 45% cotton.
44 inches wide.

Essex Yarn Dyed Homespun is a brand new release from Robert Kaufman Fabrics. The fabric base is the same linen and cotton blend as the original Essex Yarn Dyed fabric range, however the Homespun range has a defined weave, more like a traditional shot cotton, adding both texture and interest.

Oh my goodness! Look at that texture! The fabric is also lighter in weight and has more drape than the original Essex range. It is lightly textured but soft, and perfect for dressmaking, soft furnishing, and of course, quilting. Essex Yarn Dyed Homespun is available in a range of subtle shades ranging from black to a natural linen look.

For the Love of Patchwork III ~ Work in Progress

For the Love of Patchwork ~ Quilt in Progress | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

Back to basics this week with a simple patchwork quilt. Simple patchwork is my comfort zone and my happy space. There's nothing better than pulling out all the fabrics, taking snippets from this and that fabric collection, and putting them all together.

The color palette for this quilt developed during the fabric selection (and cutting) process. The original color palette starting point was red, white, and blue, which may well have been a 4th of July theme. However as time went on I allowed the colors to flow and the fabrics to tell the story, introducing both yellow and brown and allowing red to merge into pink.

Many of the fabrics are small scale floral prints and the remainder are stash basics (dots, checks, gingham, stripes). I wanted to mention that I stayed away from using text fabric however I see now that one text fabric did sneak into the mix. I do love my text fabrics!

QUILT STATS
For the Love of Patchwork III
Quilt top measures 50 inches x 60 inches.
150+ different fabrics.
I  have made 30 16-patch blocks.
A total of 480 patches of fabric (20 rows of 24 squares).
Each finished square measures 2.5" x 2.5".
While this quilt was strip pieced I spent quite some time "randomising"
the blocks by taking strip sets apart, as well as adding individual
patchwork pieces (for example all fussy cut fabrics).

Right now I have a small mountain of fabric to fold and return to stash. I do love working from stash but I must say that my fabric stash is not the tidiest! It certainly does not have that glossy magazine picture look about it. Fabrics are pulled out all the time, they are cut into (and I am not always the most economical about how into cut it), and are refolded often with scraggly bits hanging out, before eventually being returned to stash. It is my kind of "tidy" and I generally know where everything is, which is what counts, right?

Now ready for basting and quilting.

Sunday Stash #389 Sevenberry and More!

Sevenberry - Mini Prints and More! Sunday Stash ~ © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
Sevenberry ~ Mini Prints & More!

While fat quarter bundles of entire fabric collections are a favorite precut I do also regularly choose and purchase selected fabrics from a range. While my love for fabric has few boundaries - it makes exercising restraint difficult! -  I feel that I have a fairly good understanding of the kind of prints that I reach for most often, and select fabrics based on design and color. This week's selection of fabric is perfect!

The CUTEST small scale designs by popular Japanese fabric house Sevenberry are hitting the stores and I couldn't wait to get my hands on these. Robert Kaufman's selection of these classic prints is spot on and I am so pleased that these sought after Japanese prints have become more readily available.

From Left to Right:
Stars in Black ~ When Skies are Grey by Simple and Co (Riley Blake Desings)
Cherries in White - Cucina by Victoria Johnson for Windham Fabrics

I have also added several low volume/background fabrics to stash. These clean white background fabrics can be tricky to find so when I see a print that I like and that I think will work for a future quilt I will buy yardage.

Whatever is Lovely in Farmhouse White and

And if you stop by here regularly you will already know how much I love text fabric. These two fabrics from the Meriwether collection by Amy Gibson were also promptly added to stash.

Frankie Quilt - A Finished Quilt

Frankie Quilt - A Finished Quilt | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
Frankie Quilt

My Frankie Quilt is done and I am so pleased with how it turned out. It has such a fresh and modern feel to it! I have enjoyed working on this project; working with triangles, hexagons, and cutting fabric with templates. As always I immersed myself in the fabric and color play, even to the point of choosing and cutting fabric for more star blocks than was needed (I think my next quilt will need to be a scrap quilt to take care of the endlessly overflowing scrap bin).

The quilt is quilted with edge to edge straight lines; first by ditch stitching the horizontal seams, then by quilting vertical lines just 3/4" apart. The horizontal quilting lines are hidden (in the seam) but serve as a foundation to help stabilize the quilt sandwich. I then added vertical lines at evenly spaced intervals; first 3 inches apart, then added additional lines in between.

No lines were marked for the quilting, instead I used a quilting guide attached to the walking foot to assist with keeping the lines straight (by running the guide along the seam lines and reference points on the pattern/star block).

For the back of the quilt I have used my all time favorite backing fabric ~ Newsprint by Carrie Bloomston from the Story Collection. It really is the perfect backing fabric and the good news is I still have a nice stash of this fabric on hand. It really does complement my quilts so well.

Once again I have matched it with my signature black and white stripe binding fabric ~ 1/8" Stripe by Timeless Treasures (available from Fabric Bubb).
