I am keeping it simple this week with squares, squares, and more squares. Simple but effective, and it is once again all about the fabrics; the use of color and the layout.

My quilt this week is a traditional quilt design with chains of four patch units alternated with a square, and set on point. The layout is inspired by a quilt that I made in 2006 ~ the Beaded Curtain Quilt from the book Caravan of Quiltsby Kaffe Fassett. You can see photos of the Beaded Curtain Quilt here. We continue to use the Beaded Curtain Quilt year round and is much loved in our home. For my current version of this quilt I have tweaked the size of the units, varied the layout, and mixed up the color palette to suit my fabric stash.

For the four-patch units I have contrasted dark with light fabric and created a chain of colors that graduate from light to dark and vice versa. The four-patch units have been alternated with a low volume background fabric and I have further created a background pattern with the use of a solid fabric - Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton in Highlight.

Kona Cotton Highlight is Robert Kaufman's Kona Color of the Year. It is a limited edition color that will be retired at the end of 2016. I love the color yellow and I am always keen to use more of it in my quilts. This was therefore a great opportunity to work with the color yellow - and a bright yellow at that - and make it zing without overwhelming the quilt.

I am thrilled with how it turned out! The yellow is bright and refreshing, and the background design sits comfortably alongside the chain of colors created by the four-patch units; neither overwhelming the other.

Now ready for basting and quilting.

As always ~ thank you for stopping by,
Rita

  3. I have a "yellow thing" like you had a mauve/purple thing. Not sure I am over it yet. Love your quilt.....and maybe it is softening my stand on yellow just a bit. Thanks for the post.

  6. I was determined to not like this color but then you go and do your thing and I guess yellow will be the "Kona Highlight" of my summer. Awesome as usual.

  7. It is wonderful! It appeared on my screen as a light buttery yellow...and then you said it was Highlight! I tipped my screen this way and that until I could see the real colors better! lol!!! :)

  13. Over-the-top once again! The deep colors ground that yellow so it doesn't overwhelm. I'm still studying it to try and determine if you made individual blocks (and would you have put them together with Y-seams?), or if you sewed the diagonal rows together. That's one of the things I love about your work - it makes me think.

    1. Thanks Karen! The quilt top was sewn together in diagonal rows starting at one corner and working my way to the opposite side of the quilt.

  14. Would you mind explaining how you go about organizing the colors? It just seems like an impossible task to me.

    1. Thanks you for stopping by Kathaleeny! I don't allow the colors and fabric choices to overwhelm me.

I first made the four patch units - 16 four patch units for each row (12 rows) using a range of colors graduating from light to dark or vice versa or say from grey to purple to pink. I kept a general eye on the use of color as I have a tendency to use certain colors more often than other colors.

When all four patch units were complete I arranged them as part of the quilt top careful to distribute the colors evenly.

      I hope that is helpful.

    2. Thanks, Rita. I love the finished look and noticed it flew out of your Etsy shop. I've become more familiar with the layout and understand the layout better. Diagonal quilts are hard to grasp until you get your eyes moving diagonally too. Love it. Can't wait to see what you bring us next.
