Book Review: Quilting Modern ~

Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts
by Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen.

21 Projects for Quilters at all levels.

Welcome to the Quilting Modern Weekend Book Celebration!

To say I was excited (and a little nervous) when asked to review this modern quilting book is an understatement.  Of course, like the quilt book fiend that I am, I already had a copy of this book on hand, and knew that the main  focus of the book is a technique that still feels a little foreign to me ~ improvisation:
"... creating in the moment and reacting to
ideas and our environment to make something new".

Quilting Modern is the book you are looking for if you want to empower yourself to improvise - to FREE YOURSELF - and create with an inventive spirit.  The book explores a repertoire of seven core techniques that are at the heart of improvisation and detailed instructions are included for each technique.

And so ... I found myself on the road to improvisation; just baby steps for me!  The Add It Up Quilt (pictured above) inspired a flurry of activity using the Slice and Dice technique.  I began by piecing the smaller crosses and then embraced my inner artist and created a range of slice and dice block designs.
Like I said, just baby steps; all blocks are one size and therefore fitted together without having to solve a layout puzzle.  Making these blocks was sewing heaven!  I started this quilt top late one evening and kept going into the quiet hours of the morning until it was finished.  It was a truly a liberation of my quilting style!  (All of the quilt details/photos will follow in a separate blog post next week).

Jacquie and Katie are leading-edge, renowned quilters and with this book shape the way for a new era of quilters who play with the rules, create intuitively and are guided by instinct.

Congratulations Jacquie and Katie!  Quilting Modern is refreshing and invigorating.  It has been added to the priority shelving in my library.

I am giving away my complimentary copy of the book - Quilting Modern - to one lucky reader.
