The designs are both whimsical and romantic, and feature small and medium scale floral motifs, birds, fields of flowers, and of course lemon trees, all with hidden details that require closer inspection. The soft gold/yellow hues are warm and add a lovely contrast to the blue/pink color palette.

Progress Report ~ Family Tree Raw Edge Applique

And just like that another week has flown by!  It's been a busy one with lots of behind the scenes sewing and another intense but very successful class with Kellie Wulfsohn from the Don't Look Now! fame.

This week's class was all about the quilting.  We spent the morning observing, drawing and practicing the free motion stitching.  By the afternoon we tackled our projects and we stitched up a storm.

This wasn't my first attempt at learning free motion quilting - I have read several books and watched online videos without success - but I think I am now finally starting to get the feel of it.  There's nothing like being able to actually observe an expert quilter in motion and listen to, and take heed of, their advice and quilting tips.  I can highly recommend taking a quilting class;  Kellie is a wonderful teacher and I've have learned so much more than I could have ever imagined from participating in these classes.

At home there has been some discussion as to the placement of the birds (the who's who?) on this Family Tree.  Even though the birds were placed at random there is apparently much to be read in their position amongst the branches.  Who knew?

I have also been working on piecing a quilt back for the Flower Sugar HST Quilt top finished earlier this week.

There is much to do, and so little time.

Family Tree ~ Raw Edge Applique

Today I stepped outside of my square, took a leap into the unknown and had a wonderful fun day!  Unfortunately raw edge applique has always escaped my enjoyment and when the opportunity arose to attend a class with the friendly Kellie Wufsohn (Don't Look Now!) ~ a master at her craft ~ I jumped right in and soaked up all of the wisdom on offer.

Family Tree ~ pattern by Kellie Wufsohn (Don't Look Now!)

Family Tree is just one of Kellie's many colorful applique designs and is particularly suited to practising the free motion stitching technique.  I've learned so much today, including:  fusible web can be tricky stuff, the darning foot is used for more than just darning, the pros of polyester thread, and wait for it .... basting spray and how to use it!

In case you're wondering:  my little black birds are missing their legs - just temporarily.

The applique pieces have been fused onto the background fabric and the free motion stitching around the edge of the shapes has commenced. The concentration required is almost palpable and I certainly hope that practice makes perfect.

Thank you to Kellie for making the class so enjoyable and sharing your knowledge without hesitation. Now ~ there is homework to be done.  At the next class we will be learning to fill in the background with free motion quilting.   Practice ... practice ...

Christmas Crafting

A little weekend sewing ...

A spur of the moment crafty project entirely inspired by copied from Lisa's Geometric Paintchip Christmas Tree design.
From paint-chips/paper to fabric this design works equally well; a traditional Christmas tree layout made from simple squares and Half Square Triangles.  My finished patchwork units measure 2 inches x 2 inches (finished mini quilt 18.5" x 20.5"), although any size block will work equally well.

I have jazzed my mini-quilt up with a black/white and text fabric background, and it could possible benefit from some embellishing ... mini lights, a little glitz and glitter.
Keeping the Christmas spirit alive.

The Colors of Today

Having spent the week quilting the Hourglass Quilt (pictures to follow soon), I have taken some time away from the sewing machine to go to the Australasian Quilt Convention and Expo in Melbourne, set in the beautiful Royal Exhibition Building in the Carlton Gardens.

The Australasian Quilt Convention in Melbourne is one of my favorite quilt shows and is highly anticipated.  It has again proven to be a wonderful day.   Spent with my mum and sister, chatting with friends, like minded quilters and  bloggers, it doesn't get any better than that.

I thought I would share with you the colors of my day:

Inside Out - Fruit Juice by Jane Rowland

Dreamline #3 by Brenda Gael Smith

Happy Magic by Naomi Miyake

Olive Tree (The Tree of Life) by Susanne Cody

There were many beautiful and inspiring quilts, however these snippets in particular caught my eye because of their bold color or striking design.

Textile Tantrums
I Know it's There - Somewhere! by Lyn Brown (WA)

Textile Tantrums was a special mini quilt challenge exhibition and Lyn's entry was my favorite.  This is Lyn's interpretation of when you need that something special  and you know it is in your stash but you just can't find it.  I've been there often.

Of course there were also many Exhibitors with booths overflowing with patterns, notions, and fabric bundles. Today was my lucky day:

My heart skipped a beat, and then they were mine!  Bundles of 34 different Flea Market Fancy prints.

The Australasian Quilt Convention is on in Melbourne until May 2, 2010.

Daisy Chain by Prints Charming

Back in August the Sydney based Prints Charming girls, Kirsten and Cath, emailed me to see if I would be interested in having a little play with their new fabric collection.  Of course, that's a no brainer! Yes, yes, fabric always received with open arms!

Daisy Chain by Prints Charming for Kokka Fabrics
"Starting with the notion of 70’s summers,
love birds nesting in fields of daisies,
spots and stripes decorating their world.
Layers of color create hexagon lakes,
and strung from tree to tree chains of daisies brighten up the rose tinted skyline."

I've tried to incorporate many of the fabrics in the range to make the quilt, and have made a feature of my favorite prints - those gorgeous birds.

Daisy Chain is 100% cotton fabric, and it is a heavier weight fabric - canvas - suitable for all home decorating applications, and also quilts!  I encountered no problems with the patchwork piecing, basting and quilting of this quilt - in fact I think it was easier to baste as there was little stretch in the quilt top.

I finished the quilt with a stripey binding fabric also from the Daisy Chain collection.

This quilt is going to be well traveled, having already spent some time in Sydney, it has since made it's away across to Purl Soho in NYC where the Prints Charming girls are teaching this week, and will then make it's way to the Houston Quilt Market to be part of the Kokka booth.

Daisy Chain already available:

Thank you for stopping by,
Rita

Sunday Stash #432 A Mixed Bundle ~ Stash Basics and Floral Prints

A Mixed Bundle ~ Stash Basics and Floral Prints | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #redpepperquilts #sundaystash #fabricstash

Another pretty mixed bundle of fabrics today, all of which have recently been added to stash, and as often is the case, snippets of some of these have already found their way into a quilt. All of these fabrics have been chosen for both their color and simplicity of design, and well ... pretty floral prints!

Back Porch Prints by Kaye England - Basics in Yellow, Purple, Red, and Blue | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #sundaystash #fabricstash #stashbasics

The small scale reproduction daisies are perfect and I could not resist. Available in two colors, as pictured, I think they are perfect stash basics and will mix well with the fabrics that already are part of my stash. You can of course never have too many dot fabrics and again these small scale evenly spaced dots in classic 30's reproduction colors are an excellent stash basic.

Playing with Shadows by Darlene Zimmerman - Flower Bubbles in Red and Black | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #sundaystash #quiltersstash #fabricstash
Harmony by Sweetwater for Moda Fabrics - Scatter in Sky, Rain, and Dark Sky | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #sundaystash #redpepperquilts

I am also rather fond of these two floral designs (pictured above); the first again a small scale 30's reproduction style design by Darlene Zimmerman, the second a more contemporary print by Sweetwater, in cool blue tones.

Well, I have said it before, Christmas fabric doesn't usually appeal to me, but for the second time in just a few weeks I have added a Christmas collection to stash! I really like the colors of this sweet collection; classic Christmas colors, red and green, but with the addition of lots of pink for a modern twist.

Jen's hope when designing this collection was to inspire makers to mix it with favourite prints from their stash.
