The June Dyson Coverlet

A Finished Quilt
June Dyson Coverlet - Handmade Patchwork Quilt © Red Pepper Quilts 2021

Continuing this week with another 2021 finished quilt. This quilt is June Dyson Coverlet; a pattern by Emma from Treehouse Textiles in Mornington (not far from Melbourne, in fact the perfect day trip from Melbourne, and a fabric store truly worthy of visiting in person!). Emma has a unique eye for pattern and fabric/color placement and her quilts and patterns are on my quilting bucket list.

I started this quilt at the end of May this year and finished it some time in July. The quilt consists of just two shapes - an octagon and a square - and much like a traditional hand pieced Trip Around the World Quilt it was pieced from the center out. I chose to English paper piece my quilt for that process continues to give me so much joy, and I find it a super accurate way to piece. I love the fabric placement for this quilt, and found myself spending a lot of time audition fabric after fabric fabric.

All fabric used are designer quilting cottons, and include prints by popular fabric designers like Heather Bailey and Heather Ross, and by Cotton + Steel and Ruby Star. The large scale gingham fabrics are woven checks from Cotton + Steel (Checkers). I cannot resist a gingham fabric, and you'll regularly see them make an appearance in my quilts.

For the back of the quilt I have a much loved and often used print: Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston. I have found this fabric so wonderfully versatile, the perfect backing fabric that works so well with all of my quilts.

And I have finished the quilt with a stiped fabric. In this instance I have used a dark blue and white striped fabric. I have somewhat of a tendency to accent my quilts with a black/white stripe quilt binding but in this instance I thought the blue/white would work equally well.

Talula Quilt ~ A Finished Quilt

Talula Quilt ~ English Paper Pieced © Red Pepper Quilts November2021

It's time for a blog update! I have been busy sewing, but have - hopefully temporarily - lost my blogging momentum. Here in Melbourne we've had a LOT of home time due to local lockdown and covid restrictions, and as such I have had much time to sit, sew, and reflect. Some days and weeks have been more productive than others, but there seems to be a light at the end of a slow long Winter. It's almost Summer and it feels like we're heading into the good (and jolly) season. This week I took some time to photograph four of my recently finished English paper pieced quilts in preparation for blog updates.

This is the first of those four finished quilt. This quilt is called Talula Quilt and has been designed by Australian designer Judy Newman. The acrylic templates are available from Judy's website, and the design lends itself to both hand piecing and English paper piecing. I chose to English paper piece my quilt. I continue to be well and truly invested in the English paper piecing method of sewing quilt tops together, I thoroughly enjoy this slow sewing process. Something I don't think I ever would have thought that I would say!

Fortunately I do take the occasional progress pic of my work on my phone which then provides me with some indication of when I finished this quilt top and the quilt. This quilt was started in May 2021 and I finished it some time in July 2021.

For the back of the quilt I have used an old favorite text fabric: Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston. And I have finished the quilt with a colorful binding fabric: Just a Speck by Jen Kingwell for Moda Fabrics.

Talula, she's bright, colorful and bold. I rather like her, and I certainly enjoyed piecing this quilt together. I did at one stage contemplate machine stitching the individual English paper pieced blocks together into the quilt top, but as I wasn't short of time, and consider the slow sewing process a treat, I did hand sew the entire quilt top.
