A One Patch Quilt :: Diamonds

Work in Progress.
One Patch Quilts :: Diamonds | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018 #redpepperquilts #onepatchquilts #scrapquilt

One patch quilts have been a favorite amongst quilters for as long quilters having been making quilts; where a simple shape allows the fabric to be the feature (such as the random use of fabric scraps, or a more carefully chosen fabric selection or color palette) or an intricate layout of a single repeating shape where the use of fabric dictates a design created by the one patch. One patch units and quilts vary from simple - squares, triangles, diamonds - to more complex - hexagons, clam shells, apple cores.

This week I have chosen to work with a diamond shape as my single repeating unit. For this quilt I have used a 60 degree Diamond Ruler by Creative Grids to cut my units quickly and accurately from fabric strips. I have also paid attention to the grain of the fabric (the fabric pieces are all "on grain" with the exception of a few that I re-arranged at the last minute! - as you do) for on-grain quilt top is going to be easier to baste and quilt. You can of course use any diamond template - paper or acrylic - or a ruler with 60 degree angle lines to cut your fabric pieces.

My fabric selection for this quilt consists of many of my stash favorites, some of which have been around for a number of years and others have only just arrived. I have used all printed fabrics and I have alternated a "light" (low volume) fabric with a darker fabric.

Piecing this quilt top together is not as difficult as you might think and there are definitely no inset seams. The diamonds are first sewn together in long vertical rows. The seams for each row are pressed in the one direction, alternating the direction of the seams for each row. That way when the vertical rows are sewn together all seams nest, points match perfectly, and you have a nice flat quilt top.

We're in for a treat today! Sugar Sack by Whistler Studios has arrived and I adore this reproduction fabric collection; presented in a bright color palette of vivacious red, classic blue, white, spring green and sunny yellow. Classic gingham and small to medium scale florals round out this collection with geometric prints.

The collection consists of eight designs each available in up to five different color ways. I adore several of the floral prints (especially the two designs featured above) and love how the collection is complemented by some excellent small scale basics, including gingham and ditzy florals.

I have finished my Chambray + Liberty Checkerboard Quilt and I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. I especially love how the quilting stitches settled into the chambray fabric. I have again used a heavier weight thread for the quilting (28wt Aurifil) so while the stitches nestle into the fabric they are still well defined and an additional decorative feature of this quilt. Having said that, this quilt is all about the beautiful Liberty of London fabrics. I do love working with these fine fabrics and for this quilt I have used a number of classic prints that I just can't get enough of!

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric (Jardin de Paris in Mint) from the Menagerie collection by Rifle Paper Co for Cotton + Steel. This is such a beautiful floral fabric which suited the feel of this quilt perfectly, balanced the overall color palette, and gave the quilt a warm glow.

I have finished the quilt with a Liberty of London Tana Lawn fabric for the binding; a bright and cheerful yellow fabric called Summer Blooms A from the Garden of Dreams collection.  And while I usually machine stitch the binding, I did hand slip stitch the binding to the back of the quilt because ... Liberty! Lovely Liberty.

Exclusive Alice Caroline ~ Liberty of London Collection

A sponsored post.

Alice Caroline specializes in selecting fabrics from the main Liberty of London collection, the world's most desirable fabrics with a unique heritage dating back over 100 years, and putting the right designs and colors together to form their own unique brand. Fabrics are packaged together or sold individually by the yard to give customers a wonderful choice of colors for their sewing projects.

Alice Caroline is once again delighted to announce the launch of their brand new and exclusive Liberty collection of fabrics. The collection has been designed in collaboration with the Liberty design team. Alice has chosen her favourite prints and created a collection of gorgeous new colorways which are now available exclusively from the Alice Caroline website.

There are 12 beautiful and popular Liberty prints which have been recoloured to create a stunning Liberty rainbow in dusty tones. The rainbow tones in this new collection are pretty soft pastels that still have the hallmark of strong Liberty design and colour. Included are brand new colorways of the popular Betsy print (in 2 unique colorways!) as well as Mitsi, and Wiltshire.

This range has been inspired by Alice's love of Liberty fabrics and by her desire to see new colour options in some of her favourite prints. Alice has spent many months collecting scraps, delving through archive fabrics and playing around with colours to get to this point. And what a treat the collection is; a rainbow of dazzling colors. The rainbow theme means that the whole collection works really well together for sewing projects and of course quilting.

The exclusive fabric collection is available to pre-order now - to be shipped from 5th July 2018. Alice Caroline is based in the UK and ships internationally.

When clicking over to take a peek at the exclusive collection you may also like to check out the new quilting cotton collection that has just arrived: Tea for Two.

Sunday Stash #440 Flossie Teacakes' Guide to English Paper Piecing

Flossie Teacakes' Guide to English Paper Piecing by Florence Knapp | © Red Pepper Quilts 2018

I thought it might be nice to mix things up today and feature this wonderful new addition to my quilt book library rather than a fabric stash addition. Flossie Teacakes' Guide to English Paper Piecing by Florence Knapp is specific to English Paper Piecing but if you enjoy stitching and have an appreciation for patchwork and quilting (or craft) in general, I think you will treasure this comprehensive guide as much as I do.

Click on any image for larger view.

More than a "how-to" resource book Flossie Teacakes' Guide to English Paper Piecing offers a softer, warmer approach, starting with a brief history of English Paper Piecing, exploring the the joy of working with our hands and the benefits for mind, body, and spirit, and a fascinating insight into the tenacity and grit required to complete long term projects (featuring the works Albert Small - whose first quilt contained 36,000+ hexagons and the patchworks of Lucy Boston).

The Quilts of Albert Small

Chapter 2 shines a spotlight on modern English paper piecers including the works of Linda White, Miss Leela, Dittany Matthews, Jodi Godfrey and Lorena Uriarte. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about these women; what motivates and inspires them, and their approaches to handsewing, and I could immediately relate to the expressions of joy that English paper piecing brings to their life.

Elenor Jean quilt by Linda White
Sally Amberton's Hexagon Patchwork
Work in progress ~ Blissful Abandon by Lorena Uriarte

Chapter 3 and 4 explore the technique that is English paper piecing and all that this entails; from needles, thread, and paper pieces, to tessellating designs, templates, and of course the fabrics!  This book is a comprehensive guide that covers the basics of EPP - like basting techniques, fussy cutting fabric, and wrapping different shapes - to less often covered topics, like how to wrap and sew curves, securing stitches, appliqueing EPP to a background fabric, and a excellent tip on how to tie your thread onto the needle so that you can stitch with a relaxed hand.

And last but not least Florence includes several original paper-pieced rosettes and quilt patterns to practice your EPP skills, to inspire, and to tempt you to play with geometric shapes.

Congratulations Florence on the release of this beautifully written and informative book! I have already spent several hours reading through the stories and studying the quilts that have brought countless hours of joy to the makers; inspiring me to continue to work on my English paper piecing projects and reminding me take time to reflect and sew slowly and purposefully.

Enjoy Sunday!
Rita
