English Paper Piecing - Liberty Stars Quilt - Part 1

Liberty Stars Quilt - English Paper Piecing - Part 1 | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

Since finishing my last English Paper Pieced (EPP) project earlier this month - The Floral Hexagon Quilt - my hands have been busy stitch, stitch, stitching my next EPP quilt. This time I am working with diamonds rather than hexagons and I am using beautiful Liberty of London Tana Lawn fabric.

In case these units look familiar, I am taking the Liberty Stars Pillow Cover that I made in July to the next step with a few minor variations (smaller units and a different layout and joining shape). The Pillow Cover is from the book Quilting on the Go: English Paper Piecing by Sharon Burgess, and because I enjoyed working with Liberty fabric so much - and love having an EPP for evening stitching - I thought it might be fun to make a similar style quilt.

For my Liberty Stars Quilt I have added Liberty Tana Lawn solid fabric into the mix of small scale floral prints. Did you know that Liberty lawn fabric was available as a plain fabric? I only recently discovered the Liberty plain fabric base and thought it might be a good way to add contrast and a sense of calm. Mind you, the colors are bright and cheerful (also available in crisp, clean white!).

Plain (or Solid) Liberty of London Tana Lawn fabric is available from:

I have completed all the star units for my quilt as well as all the half star units to fill the edges of the quilt. The plan now is to join the star units together with a hexagon. The background fabric (the fabric for the hexagons) will the same as the fabric that I have used for my Liberty Stars Pillow Cover: Oakshott Cotton - Scandinavia in Stockholm (Grey). This beautiful shot cotton and the luxury tana lawn fabric are a lovely combination, and both are a pleasure to work with.

QUILT DETAILS
Liberty Stars Quilt
135 Liberty Star Units + 22 Liberty Half Star Units.
Papers used so far:
876 Diamonds (Six Pointed Star) with 1 3/4 inch sides.
Notions/Tools Used for English Paper Piecing:
Acrylic templates with a 3/8" seam allowance for cutting fabrics.
The Bottom Line 60wt thread by Superior Threads.

When it comes to English Paper Piecing I am a glue baster and a whip stitcher, and when combined with the right (for me) needle and thread the stitches are barely visible - if at all.

These star units are ready to be laid out, arranged and re-arranged, and then joined together with a hexagon. I have yet to cut into the background fabric and therefore have a lot of cutting and glue basting to do before I can get started on the joining process. I hope to have more to show you in a few weeks.

Daisy Chain is a bright and cheerful fabric collection with a vintage floral vibe; classic floral prints in a dreamy color palette. The collections consists of eight designs each printed in up to four different colorways, and includes several sweet small scale floral designs, two quilt block designs, and a plaid print.

This is such a fun quilter's collection, perfect for quilts and more of course. I adore the darling daisy prints and have added yardage to stash. I also rather like the open plaid prints for adding a graphic element to my quilts.

This traditional quilt is all creating impact by repeating blocks, as well as about the colors, and fabric combinations. Most fabrics were pulled from stash, others have only just arrived and were yet to find their way into the stash; some of the fabrics are older prints and some are recent releases. Working from stash is very satisfying and I love pulling out the many fabric "favorites"; working out what does and what doesn't go together, although generally I find that most of my stash plays nicely together.

I have quilted this quilt by first ditch stitching all horizontal and vertical seam lines, and then additional vertical lines were added for texture; simple and functional rather than decorative quilting, and at the same time giving the quilt a lovely texture and a soft drape.

The quilt was finished with my usual backing fabric and binding treatment: the backing fabric is Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston and the binding fabric is a narrow black/white stripe by Timeless Treasures (available from Fabric Bubb).

I am so pleased with this finished quilt and I have loved making it. I adore the simplicity of the design and the combination of fabrics. I especially love the inclusion of the beautiful Liberty of London Tana Lawn floral fabrics that blend so perfectly with the very modern fabrics that were also used to make this quilt. I foresee more Half Square Triangle Quilt in my future!

Sunday Stash #402 A Mixed Bundle of Fabrics - September 2017

Sunday Stash ~ Mixed Bundle | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

Another pretty mixed bundle of fabrics today, all of which have recently been added to stash, and snippets of some of these have already found their way into a quilt. All of these fabrics have been chosen for both their color and simplicity of design, and well ... roses!

The first four fabrics are from the Reef collection by Elizabeth Hartman and the Playground collection by Amy Sinibaldi respectively. I am rather fond of the minty green bubbles design as well as the brown Ring o' Roses design! Both are perfect stash basics!

I also love these two prints by Another Point of View ~ especially the quirky colors; not quite bright yellow, nor sweet pink. Instead a warm, almost mustard yellow and a blue tinged coral pink.

Half Square Triangles Galore ~ A Quilt in Progress

Half Square Triangles Galore | Quilt in Progress | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

Half Square Triangles (HSTs) are one of my favorite patchwork units, and I have made a number of quilts with just Half Square Triangles in the past. This quilt however is surprisingly my first HST quilt for 2017. I do not tire of seeing and sewing one-patch quilts despite the fact that these particular units (HST's) can be tedious to piece (and trim).

For this quilt I have chosen some of my current favorite fabrics and matched them up with a stash basic - dots, checks, stripes, gingham - creating an quilt with impact by way of repeat blocks and colors, and clean lines. My selection of  favorite fabrics seems to constantly change although some things, like the use of gingham, inclusion of pretty floral and low volume fabrics, stay the same.

QUILT DETAILS
Half Square Triangles Galore
Quilt top measures 57 inches x 69 inches.
19 vertical rows of 23 Half Square Triangle units.
437 Half Square Triangle units.
Each finished HST unit measures 3 inches x 3 inches.

I piece HST units using this common method of making 2 units at a time:
Layer two fabric squares right sides together.
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner,
and with a 1/4" presser foot stitch along both sides of the drawn line.
Cut on the drawn line and press seams (usually towards the darker fabric).
I then take the extra step to trim the unit for accuracy.
(For this quilt I cut 4" fabric squares and
trimmed HST Units to measure 3.5" x 3.5")

This quilt was pieced while also working on quilting my Floral Hexagon Quilt. My goal was to piece and trim several rows of HST units each day so as not to be overwhelmed by the amount of block trimming that needed to be done. This advance preparation meant that this quilt top seemed to come together effortlessly and I am already planning my next HST quilt!
