It was a pleasure working with these fabrics and although they are admittedly not my "usual" fabrics nor my usual quilt design style, I love the finished quilt. It is warm and colorful, and the shapes created by the placement of the triangle blocks keeps the eye wandering. I find it so important to keep pushing my own boundaries, to challenge my color preferences, and to test my skills. It keeps things interesting and challenges me to keep making.
I have quilted the quilt by first ditch stitching all vertical and horizontal seam lines to stabilize the quilt layers. I then added additional vertical lines in between the foundation grid lines. The lines are a 1/2" apart and as I couldn't decide on a thread color that would best "blend" with all of the fabrics I decided that a rainbow of colors would be appropriate (and fun!). I changed the color of the top thread at random. And last, I have added a few extra lines of stitching to outline the diamond shapes.
For the back of the quilt I have used my go-to Newsprint fabric from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston. I had already pieced a quilt back from a dark purple fabric for this quilt but it just didn't feel right. It felt like there was too much color (if that is even possible ... maybe I was overwhelmed by too much of the color purple, which as you may already know is a difficult color for me), and this lighter backing fabric balances the color palette, and felt right.
I only had fat quarters of the fabric collections that I have used to make this quilt and as such did not have sufficient yardage to piece anything other than a scrappy binding. Let me just say that I love a scrappy binding!
This quilt was sold prior to listing in my Etsy Store and prior to publishing this blog post.
