Outback Wife Quilt - A Finished Quilt

I am so pleased with how my Outback Wife Quilt turned out! This bark cloth fabric collection - Outback Wife Collection by Cathi Bessell-Brown - is far from the style of fabrics that I usually work with however I was so drawn to the vintage style floral fabrics that I had to have them and I ordered these sight unseen. Once they were in the house I also knew that the challenge was on to make something with them! And truth be told, I couldn't wait to get started.

While the large scale prints were out of my comfort zone I had the most wonderful time finding fabrics from stash that would work with these prints. Many were auditioned and only a few additional fabrics made it into the quilt. The bark cloth was much easier to work with than I had imagined and the quilt has a lovely drape and soft hand.

The quilt is quilted with closely spaced (1/2" apart) edge to edge, vertical lines and I have again used Aurifil 28wt thread (the gray spool) for quilting (28wt top thread - 40wt thread in the bobbin). The heavier weight top thread gives the stitches extra definition which this quilt with the heavier weight fabric can certainly take.

For the back of the quilt I have used my go-to backing fabric: Newsprint in White from the Story Collection by Carrie Bloomston. The binding fabric is a medium Gingham print by Riley Blake Fabrics which complements the quilt top perfectly.

  9. This is beautiful! I love the way the gingham binding almost looks like a blanket stitch from a distance, especially on the newsprint backing.

  12. These are outside my usual prints too but they remind me of the curtains we had at home and a dress my mother wore when I was very young... nostalgia is a hard thing to beat down! They all play surprisingly well together.
