Red and White Double Irish Chain Quilt

Work in Progress.

Red and White Quilts are my most recent fascination! After the completion of my recent Red and White Irish Chain Quilt I could not help but delve further into the world of traditional red and white quilts, and more specifically Irish Chain Quilts. I have added a resource book to my extensive quilt book library that I can highly recommend called: Red and White Quilts: Infinite Variety: Presented by The American Folk Art Museum.

This book is a catalog of red and white quilts (it is not a pattern book). It is a detailed look at the world’s most celebrated collection of red and white quilts. The book features over 650+  beautifully photographed quilts from the past three centuries and includes many traditional quilt designs and examples of of feathered stars, diamonds, log cabins, Irish chain, baskets, lettering, snowflakes, embroidery and applique. Anyway, inspiration for my quilt has come from the examples of Irish Chain Quilts that are featured in this book. Although I have added my own variation ...

The quilt design is block based, and when broken down into smaller units it is not difficult to piece. In an effort to sew efficiently I first made in excess of 200 nine patch blocks pieced from strip sets. Each finished nine patch block measures 2 1/4" x 2 1/4", with each tiny square measuring 3/4" x 3/4" (finished).

Piecing 200+ nine patch blocks was time consuming, but once these were done the quilt top came together in an afternoon + evening sewing session.

  1. Dear Rita,
what a wonderful quilt! Such a traditional pattern and what an amazing modern look! I like the single non solid squares in it. It gives the quilt additional eyecatcher points!
    Greetings, Rike

  2. Made my first ever quilt using 1" finished squares a few years ago. Not sure if I am ready for 3/4" squares although I am sure this quilt is awesome in person. Photos just never do justice to a quilt. Thank you for sharing the process.

  8. Gorgeous design! I love it! I would love to make a two color quilt, probably red and white but there are so many designs to choose from! What is overwhelming to me is choosing a quilting design. I don't have a longarm but how would you go about choosing how to quilt it? It will be interesting to see what you come up with.

  9. Rita, this one is very attractive.
I love red. and white. I always love your quilts.
When I was a kid, my mom said red and black do not go together bc it was Hitler's colors.
Seriously, I grew up with that in my mind.
Well, my mom was 20 years old when WW2 was destroying everything. LOL I thought you might like that little tidbit of trivia from my life :-D

I do like this quilt very much. It looks fun to make. I love white in almost all of my quilts too

  11. Something I always admire about your quilts is the immaculate and accurate piecing. With this quilt, the success of the design relies on clean geometry and your blocks, as always, are perfect! It's beautiful...

    1. Thank you for stopping by! All seams are pressed to the side - press seams away from the nine patch blocks.
