Ohio Star Quilt - The Blues II

A finished custom order quilt.

Ohio Star Quilt - The Blues II
If you stop by my blog regularly this quilt may look familiar! This is a custom order quilt of the same Ohio Star Quilt that I made in January this year. Custom work can be tricky and I generally prefer to sew at my own leisure rather than to a schedule or set plan, however my customer was such a pleasure to work with and so very patient - and for the fact that we both had a clear understanding of how she wanted the quilt to look - I could not but accept her request.

The quilt is the same design and color palette as the original quilt. Several fabrics have been omitted (like the larger scale cat print, as requested), others have been substituted as I worked my way through my stash in search of the right fabrics. Whilst this blue and brown color palette is not my usual color palette, it always comes as a surprise to see just how many prints I can pull together to suit that color palette. You may also note that I have given my usual black and white stripe binding fabric a miss! This time I have used a narrow blue and white stripe fabric as requested by my customer.

It feels like this quilt came together super quickly, although in reality I have worked on this quilt on and off for most of  February, cutting fabrics at the same time as cutting fabrics for other quilts and projects, making the most of down time when in between projects to piece and to quilt. Half and hour here and there. It all adds up!

This quilt is now making the long journey to my customer in the US.

Sunday Stash #373 Eureka by Emma Jansen and a Giveaway!

Eureka by Emma Jean Jansen for Ella Blue Fabrics | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
Eureka by Emma Jean Jansen
for Ella Blue Fabrics

Today I am celebrating the release of Emma Jean Jansen's most recent fabric collection for Ella Blue Fabrics - Eureka!  Once again Emma's collection is a feast of all things Australiana. Emma has taken inspiration from her home town of Ballarat and it's history of gold mining. Emma grew up in an area where there were abandoned gold mines and caves and spent her childhood playing and having fun.

The collection features geometric designs representing quartz crystals and a fabulous print with gold highlights showing the veins of riches! There is a fabulous mine shaft map print and a stripe which is inspired by the different colors of the layers of the earth. A wagon wheel is a great circle contrast and of course Emma had to include a Southern Cross Star print which was a symbol of the Eureka rebellion.

Red and White Double Irish Chain Quilt

A finished quilt and a picture post ~

My second red and white quilt is finished and another bucket list quilt has been ticked off! I love Irish Chain quilts and as it is a block-based design these quilts really are a lot easier to piece than what you may imagine. I also love tiny patchwork piecing - although at  3/4" finished squares this is not exactly all that tiny - and as such this kind of repetitive piecing suits me perfectly.

In the same way that I quilted my first Red and White Irish Chain Quilt this quilt has been quilted with an all over 3/4" grid. I also chose to mark some of the quilting lines as the distance between seam lines and the patchwork pieces was too great for me to judge a straight line by eye. I used a Clover Water Soluble Marker and a ruler to mark some of the lines prior to basting.

The marked blue lines were easily removed by gently immersing the whole quilt in a tub of cool water (after quilting). Concerned about possible color run from the red and black solid fabrics I did add multiple Color Catcher sheets to the water. Thankfully the fabric was color fast and did not bleed (I don't pre-wash fabric). I then tumble dried the quilt on a gentle setting, giving the quilt a soft and slightly crinkled look and feel. All of the photos in this blog post are of the washed and tumble dried quilt.

For the back of the quilt I have used go-to backing fabric: Newsprint in White from the Story Collection by Carrie Bloomston. The binding fabric is the same as the background fabric used for the quilt top: Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton in Snow. The binding was attached to the quilt after the quilt had been washed and dried; this simply allowed me to trim off excess batting and accurately square up the quilting after it had been washed/dried.

Sunday Stash #372 Black and White 2017 by Cotton + Steel

Black and White 2017 Cotton + Steel | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

From the popular design team and following the success of the previous two Black and White fabric ranges comes the Black and White 2017 collection; again a collaborative Cotton + Steel collection.

Sixteen prints in black, white and shades of grey and a touch of gold metallic and neon pink. Several of the designs are black and white reprints from earlier and current Cotton + Steel collections others are a play on, or an extension of, previous designs and themes; retro roller skates, bears, snow leopards, seabirds, lanterns.

Needless to say there are a number of prints here that I love and snippets of several have already found their way into my quilts. The designs that are printed on unbleached cotton fabric base are a favorite, especially the print with a pop of neon pink.
