Flowering Snowball Quilt - Work in Progress

I am working on a Bucket List quilt this week! A traditional Flowering Snowball Quilt has been on my "want to make" list since 2012 when I fell in love with (and made one block) from the Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters book by Katy Jones (see this blog post). I have since purchased acrylic templates for a 9 inch Flowering Snowball block and finally decided that it was time!

The Flowering Snowball block is one of those blocks where size, print, and color placement can really affect the design. The variations are endless! The layout that I have used was very much inspired by the Flowering Snowball Pillow made by Angela Pingel.

This layout requires planning as the colors/fabrics used for each block are determined by the surrounding blocks. I found that the best way to tackle this project was to piece the individual "corner" units (the 3-piece colored portions - as pictured above) of the block, preparing whole circles but not actually piecing together the four "corner" units that make up each circle. I then arranged the four units that make up the circles on my design floor, added the solid white fabric pieces (joined together with a black center square) and pieced together each individual Snowball block.

As you may already know, I am not a pinner and this quilt was pieced entirely without using a single pin. I have written a tutorial here which shows you how I sew curves without pinning, and this same technique has worked for this block. I do however like to nest my seams and I was able to nest all seams by pressing seams in opposite directions for each alternate block. I did not clip any of the curved seam allowances and with gentle steam the blocks pressed up nicely.

I am so pleased with how this quilt top came together and I have already made good progress; it is basted and it is now ready for quilting. I am well on the way to ticking this one off my quilt bucket list.

More soon.
