The Scrappy Day Trip Quilt and Quilt Pattern

Scrappy Day Trip Quilt
58 inches x 70 inches
After having spent the better part of two days writing the instructions for my strip pieced Scrappy Trip Quilt I came to the conclusion that this really this needs to be a proper detailed pattern. I am sorry to disappoint anyone that may have been looking for a free tutorial but a tutorial just wasn't going to cut it. I like my instructions to be comprehensive and that includes detailed diagrams and photographs for every step of the process which also makes this pattern suitable for beginner quilters. The tutorial became lengthy and at first glance it looked like information overload for something that is really not complicated. A structured pattern will deliver all this information in a format that you can print if required and peruse at your leisure.

ABOUT THE SCRAPPY DAY TRIP QUILT PATTERN (PDF FILE)
  • The quilt is strip pieced in blocks and blocks are constructed in such a way that all seams will "nest" when sewing the individual blocks together, as well as when sewing blocks together into rows, and when sewing rows together into a quilt top. This not only makes the task of matching seams and sewing a quilt top easier but helps to ensure that the seams will lie flat resulting in an smooth and even quilt top.
  • Although not specifically written for use with Jelly Rolls the pattern is Jelly Roll friendly.
  • Pattern includes a foundation paper piecing pattern for the (black) Triangle in a Square Block as well as paper templates if you prefer piecing these units with templates.
  • The finished quilt measures 58 inches x 70 inches. The size of the quilt can however very readily be increased or decreased by adding more or less rows/bocks.

I have LOVED every part of making this quilt! I love the repetitive task that is block making; choosing fabrics and the easy strip piecing process. I finished the quilt by ditch stitching all seam lines, taking nothing away from the fabrics and the design, but giving the quilt texture and a lovely soft drape.

For the back of the quilt I have used my current favorite text fabric Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston, and have matched it with my signature black/white stripe fabric for the binding. I have used a low loft batting perfect for use with light and bright white fabric.

  1. This is fantastic and you are right, sometimes a tutorial is not the right format for detailed instruction.

  3. What a delightful quilt! The use of the black and white for the partial blocks along the edge helps to draw your eyes back to each of the beautiful blocks in the center and to take a closer look at all of those pretty fabric choices. This is the perfect size for cuddling!

  4. As many free tutorials as you have written - if you say it needs more, it does. People will love the pattern and will buy it if they want to make the quilt. It has so many great details that they don't get otherwise.

  10. Just beautiful! I love the amount of different fabrics, there is so much color. Those solid black stars break up the pattern perfectly! Quilting in the ditch was a great idea, it doesn't take anything away from those lovely fabrics.

  11. I think this is my favorite design yet! The pop of the triangles and the carefully placed fussy cut blocks were just right way to mix up this traditional design. As always, I love your color combinations.
