A Custom Order Baby Boy Quilt

And a Picture Post.
Custom Order Baby Boy Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2015

A custom order baby quilt for a very special baby boy; born early, fought hard to overcome many obstacles, and won. His mother has told me that they expect to be home soon, and that they both deserve a special treat. I can't begin to imagine how difficult their journey home has been and I hope that this quilt represents the comforts of home for both of them.

Although I was given free reign to create and use fabrics of my choice I was pleased to be given  the following general guidelines: fresh, modern, but still sweet and nostalgic, the use of fabrics with letters and text, low volume fabrics and I-Spy elements, straight line quilting and striped binding. Perfect! A combination of all my favorite quilt elements.

I started the fabric selection process with a green/blue color palette and added red/yellow and a sprinkling of brown fabrics for warmth, and black/white prints for contrast. I think I've met the I-Spy, low volume and text fabric requirements. There is much to see and there are stories to be told.

All fabrics are from stash and include several of my hoarded favorite Japanese prints. For my fabric friends:

Lissa in Grey Cloud - Follie by Lotta Jansdotter  :: Large scale grey gingham.
Countdown by Alexander Henry Fabrics :: Large scale black/white numbers.
Geekly Glass in Yellow from the Geekly Chic Collection :: Glasses in Yellow
Elk Family by Jay-Cyn Designs for Birch Fabrics :: Deer in Green and Grey
Spoonflower - Scandinavian Fish by Syko :: Low volume fish.

  1. I always enjoy your quilts and this one is no exception. Love the cool colours and the interesting squares of fabrics - walking boots, writing, funky glasses, my favourite little elephants, etc etc. This quilt fits your brief perfectly and I hope baby and his family love it and baby thrives and enjoys the comfort of such a super quilt.

    1. Hi Beth - The Boot and Shirt squares are fussy cut from the one fabric: Lifestyle from the Live Life Collection by Yuwa (available in Pink, White and Light Brown). Best place to search for this fabric is Etsy.

  5. Curious to know when you sew these patch lovely quilts, do you make nine patches or sew in strips just grabbing as you go? I always love what you make. You have the best stash. Janita

  15. I love the fabrics, they are very interesting for young and old eyes to travel over and not specifically 'baby' prints which have a limited shelf life.

  20. I love all your quilts of this style (and all the other styles, but I'm making a special point here), but this particular one resonated with me. When I saw it on IG, I just sat and stared and tried (as usual) to analyze it. I could never have put these fabrics together. You are so, so, good at this.

  21. This is a really beautiful baby quilt and I'm sure the little boy will have lots of fun exploring all the fussy-cut squares. My personal favorites are the shirt and boots ones.

I saw that you used some Spoonflower fabrics. I've read rather contradictory statements regarding the durability of their prints. Could you maybe say something about your experiences when working and washing them? Thank you very much!

    1. Hi Enny - thank you for stopping by. I haven't personally had any negative experiences with fabrics that I have ordered from Spoonflower and used in my quilts. I do only order the print/design on Kona Cotton fabric base, which I think has greatly improved the quality of the Spoonflower digitally printed fabric.

I don't prewash fabric (unless for some reason I have reason to suspect a color run may be an issue - for example a red fabric to be used in a quilt alongside a white fabric. This would be a precaution only). Fabric dye run isn't a big a problem with the quality quilting cottons manufactured today.

  23. Awesome quilt. Quilts are extended hugs and what baby wouldn't want to be wrapped/hugged in this quilt.
    Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Kate, Thank you for stopping by! The fabric you refer to is Urban Sprawl by Alexander Henry in Natural/Bright. It is a really busy print but perfect for fussy cutting. Rita

  25. Hi Rita, I love your quilts! enjoyed your Sewtopia in Chicago class so much. I have the same question as Girlfriend Gap above: "Curious to know when you sew these patch lovely quilts, do you make nine patches or sew in strips just grabbing as you go? I always love what you make. You have the best stash. Janita"

    1. HI Janita - thank you for stopping by! This particular quilt was pieced one patch at a time, sewing squares into rows and then joining the rows together. I do also often strip piece my scrappy quilts in the same way as set out in my Postage Stamp Tutorial. You can modify the cutting instructions for this tutorial to suit your needs for example, by cutting the strips wider - ie 4.5" wide for 4" finished patches. Rita
