A Red and White Coin Quilt

This is the quilt that nearly ended up as scrap fabric in my scrap bin.  During the cutting and design floor process, I really wasn't feeling the quilt love, and almost threw in the towel.  At that "almost" point the fabrics used were almost exclusively red, red, and red, and moreover the reds varied so much in hue (from pink to orange and blue) that it just became unpleasant to look at.

Adding white as a neutral seemed to solve the problem.  Lots of white.  The more white fabric I added to the quilt in progress the more I started to like what I saw ( you already know just how much I like white fabric!).

You almost cannot go wrong with a mix of red and white, such a classic look that will transcend time with grace.  The design itself is very basic, strips of fabric in varying widths, and much like an unconventional Coin Quilt.

I am looking forward to quilting this quilt, but first I need to make the backing and then baste it.  It feels like a busy sewing weekend coming up; perfect for our blustery and cold Winter weather.

  1. I love coin quilts and have made a couple myself. A good way of using scraps and I love your red & white combination. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt.

  4. It is difficult to hear "cold, blusterly" weather when we are in the 80's and going to the 90's tomorrow. At any rate your quilt is looking good and I can't wait to see the finished project.

  9. I'm just about to start a coin quilt, so thanks for the inspiration! I think the white must make the whole quilt top a lot fresher than it would be without; I'm sure it was the right decision :) Look forward to seeing the finished article!

It is funny hearing from someone on the other side of the world about winter time. Here in Texas the high today is 96 degrees!!!! Enjoy the cool weather!

  12. This is wonderful. You're right - red & white never goes out of style - always classic.

And I love your tale of not-loving and then adding the white. Good lesson to hear. It makes the quilt sing.

  13. I do love two color quilts esp. red. I have one that I started years ago but have not finished. I ran out of the fabic I hand stamped and I have not been able to find the stamp. Maybe with the cleanup I have started I will come across it. It is probably in a box I haven't unpacked since I moved. I will be looking forward to seeing this quilted and esp. what you end up using for the binding. Are you going to play it safe by using red or are you going to go with a completely diffent color? I can't wait to see!!

  27. I've decided I'm a bit partial to a spot of red and white in a scrappy quilt! (yours is looking like the refined version of mine!)...
