Sunday Stash #322 Eastham by Denyse Schmidt

Eastham by Denyse Schmidt | Red Pepper Quilts 2016
Eastham by Denyse Schmidt
for Free Spirit Fabrics

The latest collection by popular designer Denyse Schmidt has arrived! Eastham was inspired by summers spent at her grandmother's cottage on Cape Cod ~ "... the smell of cut grass and pine needles, the sound of buzzing crickets and sneakers crunching on gravel. The collection captures the joyful simplicity and untamed beauty of New England, especially that brief bittersweet time between the end of Summer and the beginning of Fall."

The collection features eight versatile designs in three evocative colorways (Thistle, Bittersweet, Juniper), and includes detailed and intricate floral designs to basic basket weave, stripe and Denyse's  signature plaid.

A Custom Order Checkerboard Quilt

A Finished Quilt.
A Checkerboard Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2016

A picture post of the finished Checkerboard Quilt. I have had such a wonderful time working on this quilt! What I like most about this quilt is that it is a great showcase of fabrics - from stash basics to the many novelty prints - and I know that having such a diverse range of fabrics on hand, and a willingness to use them, makes this quilt unique. It is still use it or lose it when it comes to my fabric stash!

The finished quilt measures 60 inches x 80 inches which is towards the upper end of what I am comfortable quilting on my domestic sewing machine, but having said that the quilt basted and quilted perfectly! I have ditch stitched all seam lines, thereby creating an all over 2.5 inch grid of intersecting lines, and giving the quilt a lovely soft hand without adding or taking anything away from the fabrics that are the feature of this quilt.

For the back of the quilt I have again used Newspaper in Spackle from the Story Collection by Carrie Bloomston; still a favorite backing fabric, and I hear that this print will soon be available as a 108" wide fabric. Imagine that. You've not seen the last of this fabric here.

And I have used a classic black/white stripe fabric by Timeless Treasures for binding - another fabric that I use often for binding, for it is indeed timeless and provides just the right amount of contrast for this otherwise colorful quilt. These quilt edges ... make me so very happy!

2016 Stash Busting Continues ...

Checkerboard Patchwork Quilts | Work in Progress | Red Pepper Quilts 2016

Oh, how I love the fabric that is patchwork! This quilt is an custom order for a three year old girl. Can you imagine? Such a lucky little girl, and one that knows what she likes. A Checkerboard Quilt was ordered and my instruction for the overall color palette was "we love color". What a dream customer. I too love color, and patchwork, and all the cute fabrics that I can pour into this quilt to make it extra special.

The last few days or so I have been busy working my way through my stash, cutting and finally sewing. I have included many fabrics that are sure to entertain a three year old child, from bunnies, birds, and bugs, to chickens, elephants, flowers, mice in teacups, and so much more. Note also that this sweet girl loves the color purple ... and I am pleasantly surprised to see just how many purple fabrics have made their way into my stash. That sure has changed.

This quilt was strip pieced because it is an efficient and methodical way to sew together what would otherwise be 768 individual squares of fabric. This can sometimes result in a less than random overall look. One way to ensure that this doesn't happen is to sew additional sets that are individually pieced; most of the fabrics that have been fussy cut - for example the Kerchief Girl and the Glasses - have been individually sewn together into a rows of four squares that are then incorporated into a 16-patch block.

This quilt top is now ready for basting and quilting.

More soon.

First of Infinity
by Kumiko Fujita and Kazue Nakajima
for Lecien Fabrics

Today I am featuring another fun, bold, and colorful collection by Lecien ~ First of Infinity ~ and from my count I think it is fourth in a series of First of Infinity collections. This popular modern fabric range by Kumiko Fujita and Kazue Nakajima is all about letters, numbers, and bold geometric shapes. [Although all designs are featured here today, several designs are available in additional colorways which are not show here today].

I am always excited to see more text/numbers prints and sneak pieces into my quilts for interest and contrast in design. These fabrics are perfect for fussy cutting - snippets of text, shapes, or postage stamps - or for a geometry inspired quilt.
