Pie Making Day is Brenda Ratliff's first foray into fabric design. Brenda is an avid quilter, fabric store owner, pattern designer, quilt retreat organizer, blogger, and now also fabric designer.

Pie Making Day was inspired by Brenda's love for vintage fabrics and textiles while paired with fresh, modern colors. A rainbow of color! The collection was designed with the quilter in mind with prints in small and mid scale sizes that are perfect for any patchwork project.

The collection is vibrant, the colors are rich and saturated. The prints range for dainty florals to dots, and tone on tone designs; all of which are perfect fabric stash basics. I am completely taken by the contrast of warm and cool colors of this line, and especially love the blues and greys.

Quarter Log Cabin Blocks & Gingham - Part 1

The week in stitches.

This week I am revisiting the Scrappy Quarter Log Cabin Block, this time adding gingham fabric to the design. Scrappy + Gingham! Gingham fabric is, just like dots, stripes and checks, one of my stash basics, and I usually have on hand small pieces (fat quarters) of gingham in a range of sizes - small, medium, large - and colors. For this project I ordered yardage, with the intention of using it as sashing for the blocks, but a last minute change in design meant that the gingham fabric instead featured in each block.

Each block measures 6.25" x 6.25" 

100+ different printed fabrics from stash and rescued from the scrap bin.

The gingham fabric I have used is Medium Gingham in Black by Riley Blake.

(but only with the first 8 logs and then trimmed back to measure 6.25" x 6.25")

Today I have been busy working on the final layout and sewing these blocks together ... with sashing. It is coming together well; a traditional block, a cheerful riot of color and pattern, and a good representation of my ever evolving fabric stash.

Half Square Triangle Baby and Toddler Quilt

A Finished Quilt.

Just for fun, an easy half square triangle quilt using some of my favorite fabrics, including quite a number of beautiful Liberty of London Tana Lawn floral prints, all paired up with a range of neutral solid fabrics. I really do like the contrast that the solid fabrics have brought to both the printed fabrics and the quilt.

I spent quite some time arranging and rearranging the half square triangle units, from a complete jumble to fully organized and structured. So many layout options, and it seems that you cannot go wrong with this traditional patchwork unit.

Solid fabrics used ~

Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton in: White, Snow, Natural, Bone, 

Ivory, Oyster, Silver.

For the back of the quilt I have used a single text fabric ~ A is for Alphabet by My KT for Windham Fabrics. I have had this fabric in my "backing fabric" stash for some time, but being directional (it's nice to have the text upright on the back of the quilt) and having only a few yards on hand has meant it has been patiently waiting for the right project to come along ... and this was it!

And for the binding I have used a yellow/white stripe binding - Clown Stripe in Limeade by Michael Miller (This stripe is 1/4" wide).

 4" x 4" including seam allowances.

Quilt measures 38 inches x 49 inches.

Sunday Stash #282 Loominous by Anna Maria Horner

for Free Spirit Fabrics

Loominous is Anna Maria Horner's latest fabric collection for Free Spirit Fabrics and it is indeed luminous. Charmed by the texture of woven cloth and inspired by her family history of ornately loomed pieces has resulted in a collection that is both traditional as well as entirely inventive.

The yarn dyed fabrics (that is, the color is placed in the yarn or threads before weaving as opposed to the color being printed on the fabric after being woven) are richly colored. The collection consists of 27 prints, 3 different color palettes and several designs are available in up to five different colorways. The fabric is cotton and perfect for fashion/garment sewing, and although a lighter weight than standard quilting cotton, there is no reason why it cannot also be used for quilt making.

Custom Patchwork Quilt ~ A Finished Quilt

A Finished Quilt and a Picture Post

This custom order quilt is finished and has already been shipped. As always, these "simple squares" patchwork quilts are a pleasure to work on, and using only fabrics from my stash is equally satisfying. I was surprised to see just how many floral prints I could pull from my fabric stash, for more often than not it is the stash basics (small scale designs like dots, checks, stripes)  that tend to catch my eye and end up in my virtual shopping cart.

Quilted with edge to edge straight lines, first ditch stitching all seam lines, then quilting horizontal and vertical straight lines through the center of all squares ~ creating an overall 1.5 inch grid of intersecting lines. Straight line quilting ... still my favorite ...

For the back of the quilt I have used a small scale floral fabric from the Little Red Riding Hood collection by Tasha Noel.

And for the binding (is that too many photos of the binding?) I have used a blue/white floral print from the Liberty Lifestyle - Stile Collection.  

QUICK QUILT STATS

324 patchwork squares.

3 inch finished squares.

100+ different different cotton fabrics from stash 

including Liberty of London Tana Lawn and

Liberty Lifestyle (Bloomsbury Gardens  and Stile) Collection.

Quilt measures 54 inches x 54 inches (138cm x 138cm).
