Home! Sweet Home! April has been such a crazy busy month with travel, TEACHING CLASSES AT SEWTOPIA, CHICAGO! (the most amazing experience yet in my quilting journey, and I hope to have some photos to share with you soon), long haul flights and now a lingering dose of jet lag.

It does feel good to be back in my "normal" work space, playing with fabric, sewing and quilting. This quilt top was ready for basting and quilting (see the work in progress blog post here), and is a variation of my Color Wheel Block Pattern. The original Color Wheel Quilt was made using only solid fabric and I really wanted to see this design made with printed fabrics, including a low volume background.

I have quilted this quilt with an overall 2 inch grid of edge to edge intersecting straight lines; first by ditch stitching the vertical and horizontal seam lines, then stitching evenly spaced lines in between using a quilting guide attached to the walking foot.

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric from the Cookie Book collection by Kim Kight for Cotton + Steel. This small scale floral print on a pink background is one of my favorite prints from the latest Cotton + Steel fabric release. Needless to say I have yardage on hand and was a perfect match for this quilt top.

Of course I couldn't resist binding the quilt with my signature black and white stripe binding fabric by Timeless Treasures.

Lots of new fabrics have been added to my stash in the last few weeks, in particular quite a number of fabrics by my favorite Japanese textile designer Suzuko Koseki. These I cannot resist! Several are smaller scale re-prints of previously released designs including:

My Gardenvale Kansas Dugout Quilt is finished and I have lots of photos to share all the details. You may already have noticed that the quilting is not my usual style. I have spent some planned time away from my sewing machine and prepared quilts and blog posts for continued eye candy, however getting ahead of myself with quilt projects and blog posts proved to be a stressful and at times overwhelming task.

I try and follow just a few sewing rules that I have set for myself, and avoiding stressful sewing is one of them. As such the quilting for this quilt was outsourced to a professional long arm quilter - Karen Terrens from Quilts on Bastings - who is not only an award winning quilter but also my sister. I think we make a great team, and you can no doubt guess what we chat about when we get together. Karen has quilted an all over edge to edge design called Bountiful Feathers, which is what I had requested.

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric from the Mimosa collection by Another Point of View - Leaves in Yellow to complement the colors of the quilt top. I have finished the quilt with a red/white stripe fabric (by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics), and really like the look of the trimmed "corners" of the quilt. The binding was attached in the same way as I would do normally with the exception being that there were additional mitered corners to sew.

A happy finish ... I love the colors of this quilt (!) and even though I am not used to not making my quilts myself in their entirety (read: I find the need to control every part of every process), I love how it has turned it, and have thoroughly enjoyed working with Karen to finish this quilt.

Gardenvale Kansas Dugout Quilt ~ Work in Progress

Gardenvale Kansas Dugout Quilt in Progress | Red Pepper Quilts 2015

I am revisiting a favorite block ~ the traditional Kansas Dugout Quilt block ~ fearlessly machine pieced with lots of in-set seams (Y-seams); a somewhat time consuming task that involves cutting fabric pieces with templates, marking seam lines with a pencil, and sewing one short seam at a time. It is fiddly - but not difficult - to accomplish and so worth the effort so as to keep the background fabric (the squares) as a whole piece of fabric, especially so for the lines of the black gingham fabric.

The fabrics - other than the black/white gingham print - are all from the highly anticipated and long awaited Gardenvale collection by Jen Kingwell. Jenny's design style and eye for color is unique, and although working with this collection was a step outside of my comfort zone (the tiniest side step!), I did love watching the colors and the quilt top come together and sing.

I really am loving the color purple, my least often used and stashed (fabric) color, and the stripes are amazing, adding movement and zing to this already colorful quilt top.
