A Custom Order Baby Quilt in Progress

Work in Progress and Picture Post
Custom Order Baby Girl Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts

A quick picture post today of a custom order baby quilt - the last custom project in the busy lead up period to Christmas. This time a quilt for a baby girl. Very girly. Pink, orange, yellow and red. I do love this color palette; that sunny yellow adds so much cheer!

The design is a super simple and not unlike this Spring Quilt that I made way back in 2009. Perfect for scrappy quilts and busting stash, and strip piecing.

Cut strips measuring 2 inches x 7 inches.
Sew together four strips (using a 1/4" seam allowance).
Press seams (direction isn't important)
Square up block to measure 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches.
Make as many blocks as required.
Sew blocks into rows alternating the direction of the strips.

I made a total of 63 blocks (9 rows of 7 blocks each)
and my quilt top measures 42.5 inches x 54.5 inches.

Fabrics are from stash. So many fabric favorites, some of
which have been part of my stash for quite some time and are now hard
to find, some are recent arrivals. Mixing prints and colors together
makes me happy.

Ready for basting and quilting. More soon.

Introducing Doe by Carolyn Friedlander
due to arrive in stores in December. Soon!

Doe is Carolyn Friedlander's third fabric collection for Robert Kaufman Fabrics and follows the popular Architextures and Botanics collections. Carolyn's design style is unique and distinctive ~ modern, hand drawn lines inspired by pattern, texture, and elements of art and architecture ~ features of which are represented in all three of Carolyn's collections.

The Doe collection in particular is inspired by Carolyn's love for mixing, rather than matching, print as well as finding beauty in those things that are raw and sometimes imperfect. I rather love the grid prints, the contrast of clean lines and hand drawn designs, as well as the inclusion of several great low volume prints.

Oakshott Cottons and A Bucket List Quilt

Oakshott Bucket List Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts
Oakshott Bucket List Quilt
Quilt measures 80 inches x 80 inches
Do you have a bucket list of quilts you would like to make? I do. And it is quite a lengthy list of quilts, most of which are intricate and time consuming to make ... all waiting for my creative mood and timing to be just right. It seems this week was the right time to tick just one such quilt off my list.

Oakshott Bucket List Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts

This quilt is inspired by the Kaleidoscope Quilt from Urban Outfitter. I have made a few changes, some of which were unintentional (see the direction of the flying geese units), I have omitted one of the borders (as I was working to a specific quilt size) and worked out my own math. This quilt is based on several very basic traditional patchwork units (like half square triangles, hour glass blocks and flying geese units) and traditional layouts (like trip around the world and shadow star blocks), which makes re-construction simple. Making your own Kaleidoscope Quilt is fun and has provided me with many hours of creative pleasure, but it certainly is not the most cost effective. Materials used for my quilt top alone well exceed the retail price of the Urban Outfitter Quilt.

Quick Quilt Stats

Quilt measures 80 inches x 80 inches
40 Flying Geese units each measuring 3 inches x 5.5 inches
236 Black/White Half Square Triangles units each measuring 3 inches x 3 inches
16 Hour Glass Blocks 3 inches x 3 inches
148 Colored squares 3 inches x 3 inches
1 Square in a Square center block measuring 5.5 inch x 5.5 inches
48 Square in a Square Blocks (first border) measuring 5.5 inches x 5.5 inches
3 borders each 3 inches wide.

All measurements include seam allowances.

Whilst this quilt is not hard to make - time consuming but not difficult - it does require accurate cutting and piecing. I over-sized all of the half square triangle units (pressing open the diagonal seam) and then trimmed each unit to size. I did the same for the flying geese units; oversizing then using a Flying Geese Bloc-Loc Ruler to trim to size. This is my preferred method of patchwork piecing (as always, I recommend you use whatever method works best for you).

Oakshott Colourshott in:
 Vico (Yellow)
Avocado (Green)
Nectarine (Orange)

Beautiful Oakshott fabrics! It is difficult to capture in a photo just how lovely the weave of these fabrics are. Oakshott Colourshott fabric has a shot weave with a warp and weft of different tones - which creates a beautiful luminous and iridescent hue.

This quilt is not for sale. It has been made as a commission for a raffle quilt. I am working on this project in collaboration with Karen Terrens (long arm professional quilter, who also happens to be my sister). Karen will be quilting this quilt. It is going to be amazing!

Ready for quilting.
I am really looking forward to seeing how the quilting adds texture and interest to this quilt. I will be sure to share with you the finished quilt when it returns from the quilter.

Thank you for stopping by,
Rita

Mini Quilt Monday ~ Jagged Chevron Mini Quilt

Jagged Chevron Mini Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts

Measures 20 inches x 24.5 inches
78 Half Rectangle Triangles (HRT's)

It has been so very long since my last Mini Quilt Monday blog post! I love making mini quilts for they are a great way to experiment with fabric, color, patterns, rulers, templates etc as well as learn and practice new techniques.

Jagged Chevron Mini Quilt - Quilting Detail | Red Pepper Quilts

This design has been on my mind for some time and is created by joining rows of Half Rectangle Triangles, then offsetting and separating each rows with a strip of fabric - sashing - to create a jagged Chevron effect. It did have to experiment with block size (and several different color combinations) and sashing width to finally get a result that I was happy with.
Bloc-Loc Half Rectangle Triangle Rulers

I have again used my Bloc-Loc Half Rectangle rulers for the job of trimming the over-sized HRT units to size, with the diagonal channel hugging the seam allowance for quick/accurate ruler placement. Over-sizing and trimming units is still my preferred sewing method so these rulers really do suit my needs. [All Bloc-Loc Rulers are now available from the Fat Quarter Shop]. This one set of rulers makes up to 14 different HRT sizes.

My favorite part however was the quilting, and I really went to town on this one. Lots of quilting using the walking foot, with much turning of the quilt. Not any of the lines were marked, instead I used the edge of my walking foot as a guide and visually estimated the turning point. It took some time to find my quilting groove and for a while there my seam ripper was my very best friend, but after some trial and error it all fell into place.

I also matched the top thread to the color of the fabric, and added a few contrast colors for interest. I use a shorter stitch length - 3.2 as compared to my usual 4.0 stitch length - which made it easier to gauge if another stitch, or more stitches, were required prior to turning.

I would like to make Mini Quilt Monday more of a regular feature here, however I don't make any promises for this small piece took way longer than anticipated. I loved making it though so I will definitely have to make time for more small projects like this.

Thank you for stopping by,
Rita

30 Quilts for 30 Years Blog Hop

A Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton Celebration

Welcome! Today is my day for the Robert Kaufman 30 Quilts for 30 Years blog hop! The team at Robert Kaufman are celebrating 30 years of Kona Cotton solids with 30 days of blog posts and giveaways!
Tangled Quilt & Free Pattern | Red Pepper Quilts
Tangled Quilt
Quilt measures 72 inches x 72 inches
Features 25 Kona Cotton colors (+ background fabric).
I am pretty excited to finally be able to show you the quilt that I designed and made (pieced and quilted) as part of this celebration. The quilt features in the 30 Quilts for 30 Years Kona Look Book. It is an honor to be included with so many great designers and quilters.

Tangled Quilt & Free Pattern ~ 30 Quilts for 30 Years Blog Hop | Red Pepper Quilts

I decided to call the pattern Tangled - which seems an obvious choice - and the pattern is available as a FREE download from the Robert Kaufman website ~ here: Tangled Quilt Pattern (pdf file).

What's more, I was also asked collate my own Designer Palette Bundle of 25 Kona Colors - which made this project a little more challenging for me  ~ using all 25 colors in the one quilt. Choosing colors however was the fun and easy part!

Rita Hodge - Designer Kona Color Palette Bundle

The Tangled Quilt includes all of these colors and no more than 1 fat quarter of each color is required to complete the quilt (plus yardage of the background fabric - Kona in Snow).

Rita Hodge Designer Kona Palette Bundle is in stores now and available from:
The Fat Quarter Shop ~ Quilt Kit also available.
Fabric Bubb

I also have a few fat quarter bundles listed in my Etsy Store however shipping outside of Australia is cost prohibitive.
