Worn and Washed ~ A Finished Quilt

Worn and Washed Quilt - reclaimed shirt fabrics | Red Pepper Quilts

I've pushed ahead and finished my Worn and Washed Quilt. The fabrics used are reclaimed shirt fabrics with the addition of a several extras - new and unused fabrics - from stash, and the piecing/design was random; cutting and stitching in a freeform (albeit somewhat structured) way.

I wasn't feeling this project when working on the quilt top ~ this style of piecing just wasn't relaxing. I do like to challenge myself and work outside of my comfort zone, but I do think that it is important to also enjoy the process.

It is the quilting that finally made me fall in love with this piece. It has added so much texture! The shirt fabric wrinkled and crumpled with gusto - so much so that I wanted to see more texture. And so, I washed and then dried the quilt in the tumble dryer. What's more, I even resisted ironing it when it came out of the dryer (this is a quite an achievement for me as I iron and press obsessively).

For the back of the quilt I have used a single large scale text fabric - Script Britton Nummer Fabric for IKEA by Emma Jones - which is a nice contrast with the plain shirting fabrics and the subtle colors of this quilt.

Oh and then the binding ... which only confirmed that scrappy binding is like the icing on a cake with a cherry on top.

This quilt will go into my quilt trunk (for perhaps one day I'll do a trunk show but more so because with the number of small buttons on the quilt top it unfortunately isn't suitable for use by babies, toddlers or children).

Worn and Washed

Work in Progress

I am all for using and reusing fabrics, no piece too small, and saving the scraps. So, when I spotted this bundle of reclaimed shirt fabrics at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham (UK) earlier this month, it was destined to come home with me. The bundle is collated by Kim Porter who sells reclaimed fabrics under the Worn and Washed label.

And so it began. Cut. Sew. Press. Repeat. The pieces of fabric in the bundle varied in size from 5 inch squares to larger pieces measuring 5 inches x 12 inches. All pieces were shirting fabrics but varied in weave and print. I therefore decided that a scrappy and improvised patchwork design was the way to proceed with these fabric pieces.

My purchase also included a small variety of shirt patch pockets, labels, buttons, cuffs, and plackets all of which have been incorporated into my patchwork.

I have also added a few pieces of fabric from my stash including the floral prints as well as the red/white gingham. Frustratingly and despite my best efforts and a positive attitude, it didn't take long for me to rediscover that no matter the amount of fabric play improvised and random piecing is not my favorite way to work. I am however determined to finished this quilt.

Liberty Tana Lawn and Collage Checkerboard Quilt

A Finished Quilt.
Liberty Tana Lawn and Collage Checkerboard Quilt by Red Pepper Quilts

Straight back behind the sewing machine. I've had a wonderful two week holiday. Away from home and away from my sewing machine. I was very ready for a break from sewing and blogging and now feel refreshed and rearing to go!

Liberty Tana Lawn and Collage Checkerboard Quilt by Red Pepper Quilts

I have started where I left off - with my Liberty Tana Lawn Checkerboard Quilt. I knew I'd be coming home to baste this quilt (not one of my favorite tasks) but I don't like to leave projects unfinished. The longer it sits around as a quilt top the less likely I am to finish it.

This quilt is one of my bigger quilts; certainly one of the bigger quilts made this year. The quilt measures 64 inches x 80 inches. It seemed a good idea at the time of piecing but less so whilst basting, quilting and taking photos. It was especially hard to get a good photo of the whole quilt.

The backing fabric is a Liberty Tana Lawn fabric and I purchased it especially for this quilt. I love these cheerful sunflowers! It is rather luxurious to have a quilt with an all Liberty backing fabric but I do think this quilt called for this special touch. And it is so soft!

My choices for binding fabric were somewhat limited as I don't have many pieces of Liberty fabric that are the full width of the fabric (I usually buy fat quarters or smaller pieces). It was therefore a choice between a very scrappy binding or using the trimmed pieces from my backing fabric. I went with the latter as these pieces were long and just wide enough, and therefore perfect for this task.

Sunday Stash #243 Cotton + Steel :: August and Moonlit

Two more complete collection by Cotton + Steel have arrived:
August by Sarah Watts - Cotton + Steel
August by Sarah Watts for Cotton + Steel
August by Sarah Watts  ~ featuring lions and deer foraging in foliage. Sarah wanted her first collection with Cotton + Steel to be one that represented both power and strength. That's where the lion comes in. August is about making wishes, going after your dreams, and being resilient through the journey. It's also about all the fun along the way.

I love the gentle color palette, soft and pretty but not too overly girly.
Moonlit by Rashida Coleman-Hale for Cotton + Steel
Moonlit by Rashida Coleman-Hale
Moonlit by Rashida Coleman-Hale was inspired by a warm Summer evening in Little Italy in Manhattan ... a candlelit dinner outside, with the twinkle of the city lights above, pennants waving over head, sparklers and luminescence. There are a number of simple geometric prints in this collection that are great stash basics and also coordinate well with other Cotton + Steel collections including the basics range.
