Strip Pieced Trip Quilt ~ Work in Progress

A Scrap Quilt.
A Strip Pieced Trip Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2016

I am back in my comfort zone this week, doing what makes me happy - simple patchwork + pretty fabrics - and working my way through my fabric stash and even using up odd-sized scrap pieces from my scrap bin.

This quilt is an extension of my Single Irish Chain Quilt (the same, but different) and after some thought I worked out a way to make piecing this quilt less of a puzzle. I am always determined to find the easiest way to put together a quilt; to simplify the process and at the same to ensure that when it comes to sewing the quilt top together that all the seams nest.

Maybe this is because I don't work with a design wall (there is just no wall space sufficiently close enough to my work space and I choose not to block a window and compromise good lighting for one). When needed I use the floor to lay out my pieces but I cannot have patchwork pieces laid out on the floor for extended periods of time as I don't have  my own sewing room. Laying a quilt out on the floor seems to draw interest and often coincides with a flurry of kids that need to pass by ... to the kitchen, upstairs, outside. It never fails. Mind you, I am not complaining. I do actually enjoy working where all the action is.

And so this quilt was largely strip pieced in blocks. I'd say 80% of the piecing was complete prior to laying out the "blocks" on my design floor. Of course, the blocks that feature fussy cut fabric or patchwork elements were not strip pieced but these blocks were also pieced prior to laying out the blocks in anticipation of piecing the quilt top together.

I loved working on this project, the fabrics, the repetitive block piecing, and I love how it turned out! Next, I will prepare a basic tutorial to show you my process for piecing these blocks, sewing blocks together into a quilt top, and nesting all seams.
