Stashing Basics

An early Christmas present arrived in the mail today, and you guessed it, more fabric to add to stash!

These were purchased online from Superbuzzy -  basic Polka Dot in Sky Blue, Red, Green, Orange, Yellow, Pink, and Blue, as well as Flower Dot in Pink and Grey - a full yard of each!  These fabrics are what I call basics.  The Polka dots are fresh and vibrant in color and I use them often, even for binding.

Sourcing and stashing fabrics plays a huge role in the joy that quilting brings me.  I love trawling the net looking for online fabric stores, anticipating the arrival of new fabrics, parcels in the mail, and adding to stash.  I purchase fabric from my local fabric stores, and also online from the US where fabrics are always on sale compared to the price we pay for fabric in Australia!  What is your favorite online store, with excellent shipping rates?

  1. I love the Fat Quarter Shop. I just received an order from them last week, all purchased at 20% off. Everything was packaged and wrapped so nicely-- great fun to open and look through my purchases! I got the greatest sampler box of 12 different lines of Moda fabrics coming out this spring. 40 2-1/2 inch squares from each of 12 lines of fabric! That's 480 great little squares!!
Also, there are always things on sale, up to 50% off!

  2. I've been really pleased with Purl Soho and Contemporary Cloth with their international shipping. Shh, they mark it as a gift and split up large orders so I don't get dinged by customs. And I recently ordered from Pink Panda and was really pleased with them.

  6. I also highly recommend the Fat Quarter Shop. They ship super fast. I placed an order this morning and it has already shipped!
I just found your blog today and I absolutely LOVE your work, it's absolutely beautiful. I am new to quilting and a bit overwhelmed, but seeing work like yours does inspire me.

  7. Fabric Shack is always fantastic. Their prices are great, and they manage to squeeze a LOT into those flat rate envelopes.

  8. I shop at a lot of places... it just depends on price and discounts. I'm kind of glad I didn't take up quilting while I was still living in Oz because the cost of fabric there is insane!

  9. I have found the best by far is Fabric Shack they know how to stuff one of those international post bags. Last time I got 10 yards and shipping only cost $12US which meant I got half yards of Amy Butler's new range for less than I would have paid for fat quarters here. I still to go into a real shop and fabric fondle and come out with a yummy selection that I can get my hands on straight away though.

  11. oh I love those polka dots! heavenly!

well of course I love my own shop but I'm a huge fan and very loyal to fat quarter shop, I love her fat quarter bundles and jolly packs. My latest crush is freshfabricsaustralia on etsy, quick postage and really good prices for australia. I don't have a quilting store really close by so live on the internet and know my mailman very well! I probably should leave him out some choccies for christmas!

you must have the most amazing stash!

  13. I buy about 90% of my fabric from the Fabric Shack (http://www.fabricshack.com/) and Hawthorne Threads (http://www.hawthornethreads.com/), formerly Fabric Supplies on Etsy.

Hawthorne Threads has recently been my go to place. The prices are great, shipping is fast, there is a great selection, and they offer tiered pricing. They actually give you a discount if you purchase more in each order and more over time. It keeps me coming back. :)

  14. Currently, my favorite online fabric store is my own. And yes, you bet, I am running a sale through Dec 8! Just use the code happy20 for 20% off your fabric. My web address is www.cvquiltworks.com. I do ship international. Come check it out Rita! By the way, I love the fabrics that you chose!

  16. Yikes! Those dotties are GORGEOUS! I love them!!! I don't really have an online shop -- unless one is having a fabulous sale LOL. I usually pick up fabric when I travel a bit - I have several pretty darn good fabric shops within about 3 hours of me (including The Fabric Shack).

Add me to the list that loves Fatquartershop. I love to check out their Coming soon section.

  18. Yummy, Kei Honeycomb is one of my favorites!
Lets see, besides Etsy, I love Hawthornethreads.com and Fabricworm.com Great selection, and fair shipping...

I agree, collecting fabric is almost as exciting as finishing a quilt! =)

  19. I love quilthome.com. They send an email out with coupons for up to 30% of particular fabric lines each week, and they always have a sales section that varies each day. Plus, their shipping is exceptionally fast, and you can tell that the fabric is cut and folded with care.

  22. LOVE those polka dots, I might have to go snag some! They really are the most wonderful thing to have in your stash.

I do a lot of shopping with Fabric Shack. I don't love their website, but they have the best prices on Kona Cotton I've found, and decent prices on other stuff. Shipping is always speedy.

  27. Fabricworm on etsy is good, and they have a website as well for half yards.
And FreshfabricAustralia on etsy is excellent, she is in NSW so shipping is very cheap and it's really quick. So if you need something in a hurry but don't want to pay $26/m at the shops - Amber is your girl.

also like the sproutzstore on etsy too.

  28. Those flower dots are too cute!
I love Pink Chalk Fabric, Fabric worm, Superbuzzy, and I just joined that FabFanatic store... haven't received my first order yet, but I think its going to be a great deal!

  29. Hancock's of Paducah offers free shipping sometimes. If you sign up for their newsletter, they let you know when. I love that they include free shipping for international if you order 75$ or more. You can purchase batting as well and still get the free shipping. But, sometimes you wait awhile for it to arrive. I am addicted to Fabricworm at the moment and I also love Hawthorne Threads.

  30. ooh, sounds like there are a lot of Fat Quarter Shop fans. I love the shops on etsy because you just use your login and click away. No need to set up a new customer profile each time. I love Fabricworm and FreshFabric Australia (the latter arrives more quickly) and for Japanese fabric you can't beat Karaku and Cotton Blue (also on etsy....)

  31. I love dots! I just made a purchase at Superbuzzy recently...she has some of Rosalie Quinlan's line, and now I do too! :)
