RPQ Blogger Bundle for Pink Castle Fabrics

Recently Brenda gave me to opportunity to collate my own Pink Castle Fabrics blogger bundle. Now playing with fabric is what I love to do - even if that means I have to make a collage of the fabrics on screen first, hoping that my vision works! I think it does! That beautiful Liberty Tana Lawn (bottom left fabric) was my starting point, all other fabrics were selected to complement the colors of that print plus for variation of scale. Of course, there are a few must haves, fabrics that I love: a text fabric, several low volume fabrics, including white background fabrics with a small scale black design, and naturally a range of great bold colors.

Single Irish Chain Scrap Quilt - A Finished Quilt

Single Irish Chain Scrap Quilt - A Finished Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2015
Single Irish Chain Scrap Quilt
Finished quilt measures 49 inches x 60 inches.

I am so pleased with how this quilt turned out! Setting blocks on point can make basting and quilting more difficult due to the grain of the fabric being on the diagonal, thereby giving the quilt top a tendency to shift in ways I am not accustomed to. However, I think the task was made easier by the use of many small pieces of fabric, and the many short seams that  helped to stabilize the quilt top.

I really enjoyed the challenge of sewing this quilt together. Although not technically difficult to sew together the design requires methodical piecing to ensure that the pattern is maintained throughout; alternating a large square with a nine-patch block in the right combination of fabrics/colors.

Quilted by ditch stitching all seam lines, stitching edge to edge diagonals lines, thereby creating an all over grid of lines just 1 1/4" apart. These closely spaced lines of stitching give the quilt a subtle texture. I have used a low loft cotton batting (Matilda's Own) which, when combined with this style of quilting, gives the quilt a lovely drape.

For the back of the quilt for I have used my "go to" backing fabric which is Newsprint from the Paint collection by Carrie Bloomston. I know you must be tired of seeing this fabric used as backing fabric, but it really is the perfect backing fabric for my quilts and so handy to have yardage on hand! Of course, I have matched it with my favorite black and white stripe binding fabric ~

YOU ASKED ~
  • Large squares are cut 4 1/4" and small squares are cut 1 3/4" squares (for nine patch blocks).
  • Nine patch block measures 4 1/4" x 4 1/4" including seam allowances.
  • Setting side triangles are cut as 6 1/2 squares that are cross-cut twice on the diagonal (like X). This will ensure that the fabric along the outer edge of the quilt is on grain.
  • Settings triangles are over-sized - trim only as is required to sew together rows. The over-sized setting triangles will allow you to trim and straighten the edges of your quilt after quilting.
  • Sew blocks together in (diagonal) rows pressing seams away from the nine-patch blocks. Start at one corner of the quilt, work one row at a time, and join rows as you progress.
You can easily adjust the size of the block provided that you can easily divide the large square into three equal parts. For example: a finished 6" large square and 2" finished small squares. With seam allowances that would be: cut 6.5" large squares and cut 2.5" small squares.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask by leaving a comment, and I will explain/clarify as required.

for Moda

This big bundle of reproduction fabrics (fat eighths) arrived at my home last week and as they are a great complement for my modern fabric stash. Old meets new. The range consists of 7 designs, and each design comes in up to 7 different colorways; colors we associate with quilts made in that era.

Designs include small scale floral prints, a floral weave designs, two different dot designs and a check print.  The floral weave design (pictured top image above) is my pick of this collection. I even love the brown colorway!

These small scale designs are great for introducing reproduction fabrics into modern projects and you may already have noticed that two of the floral prints from this collection featured in the Single Irish Chain Quilt top made last week. Mixed in with modern designs fabrics, Japanese fabrics and stash basics, these 30's fabrics fit right in.

Single Irish Chain Scrap Quilt - Work in Progress

Single Irish Chain Quilt - Work in Progress | Red Pepper Quilts 2015

This quilt has been on my mind for some time and this week I finally tackled it. The pattern is a a traditional Single Irish Chain Quilt set on point, which rather reminds me of Granny Square blocks. It is a interesting quilt which emerges from a simple design ~ alternating a square with a Nine Patch block ~ more often seen in reverse (that is, the printed fabrics are a white/solid fabric, and the solid/white solid fabric is a single contrast fabric).

I've further complicated the design by using scrappy fabrics. This means that each Nine Patch block has a very specific fabric layout, as is determined by the adjoining printed fabrics. Cutting out the scrappy fabrics was not complicated - one large square plus 4 small squares for each printed fabric - the same however could not be said for sewing the quilt top together. There is no simple "sit and sew" technique. Instead all of the fabric pieces were laid out and arranged, and the nine pieces for each Nine Patch block were carefully picked up to ensure correct fabric placement, and then sewn together. One nine patch block at a time, one row at a time.

Quilt Stats

80 Nine Patch Blocks
99 Large Squares and 99 different printed fabrics.
819 pieces plus setting triangles along quilt edges.

Sewing the top together became a puzzle marathon; joining the pieces together in a logical way to ensure that the pattern was maintained throughout. It was a good way to challenge my patience and I was super happy to sew together that last Nine Patch block and eventually the quilt top!

It has been a good week! A scrap happy week with lots of sewing. The quilt top is now ready for basting and quilting.

More soon,
Rita

Sunday Stash #303 Rhoda Ruth by Elizabeth Hartman

Rhoda Ruth by Elizabeth Hartman for Robert Kaufman Fabrics | Red Pepper Quilts 2015
Rhoda Ruth by Elizabeth Hartman
for Robert Kaufman Fabrics

Rhoda Ruth is Elizabeth Hartman first collection for Robert Kaufman. Named after Elizabeth's grandmother, Ruth, who decided  as a teenager that she would rather be called "Rhoda Ruth" instead, and was inspired by her grandmother's love for costume jewelry.

The prints in the collection started with sketches of some of costume jewelry and grew into a story about three small-town animals (a fox, a giraffe, and a snow leopard) who love to dress up and imagine themselves as incredibly glamorous.

Drawn by the jewelry box of saturated colors, the adorable animal prints, and also addition of numerous basic stash fabrics this collection jumped straight into my shopping basket. No doubt snippets of this collection will soon start appearing in my quilts.

Log Cabin Quilt - Fields and Furrows - A Finished Quilt

And a picture post.
Fields and Furrows ~ Log Cabin Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2015
Fields and Furrows ~ Log Cabin Quilt
Quilt measures 48 inches x 48 inches.
25 log cabin blocks each measuring
10 inches x 10 inches (including seam allowances).
[center square 2.5" x 2.5" - width of strips 1.75" - incl. seam allowances]

It's finished! Despite some initial doubts about the layout of the blocks I am ever so pleased with how this quilt turned out. With many possible layout options available I do think that this layout is really effective - strong diagonal lines created by the use of contrasting fabric and fabric placement.

Fields and Furrows ~ Log Cabin Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2015

I like the use of the many shades of background/solid fabric to add interest and detail; subtle variations in tone that are difficult to capture in a photograph and more obvious to the eye in the actual quilt. (I have used Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton in shades of white and off-white including the following colorways: White, Snow, Butter, Natural, Sand, Ivory, Oyster, Bone, and Cream).

For the back of the fabric I have used a single fabric from the Tiger Lily collection by Heather Ross (Butterflies in Cream). The colors and tone of this fabric complement the color palette of the quilt perfectly!

For the quilt binding I have used Squared Elements in Rosewater by Art Gallery Fabrics; a soft pink fabric that finishes this quilt with a subtle frame.
