Sunday Stash #300 Storybook Vacation by Whistler Studios

Storybook Vacation by Whistler Studios | Red Pepper Quilts 2015
Storybook Vacation by Whistler Studios
for Windham Fabrics

I continue to be obsessed with these 30's prints! It is the bright colors and small scale prints that I've fallen for and that fact that they work so well with a range of modern designer fabrics - which feature so strongly in my fabric stash - that make these such a great addition. The perfect stash basics.

The complete Storybook Vacation collection consists of consists of 40 different fabrics featuring 13 different designs in up to five different colorways. It is a big bundle of fabrics! The designs include ducks, fish, frogs, beach play, and sailboats.

There are some really wonderful (and strong) colors and designs in this collection; I particularly like the orange background prints as well as the smaller scale floral designs. I also cannot ignore the purple prints!

I am rather pleased to say that my Worn and Washed Quilt is finished (see work in progress and fabric details here), not only because I learned so much from the process and from stepping outside of my comfort zone, but also because with each step I came to love this quilt a little more ...

... especially once it was quilted. I did worry about how all of the different fabric types would wash together, so rather than ponder that thought for too long I immediately washed the quilt (in the washing machine - front loader, short wash, gentle cycle), and dried it in the tumble dryer. All this after midnight of course, for I could not wait till the morning to see the crinkle and the texture. It was worth the wait, and any concerns that I may have had regarding the use of different fabric types were allayed.

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric from the latest Cotton + Steel release (Coffee Shop in Orchid - Lucky Strikes collection by Kim Kight) which works perfectly with the colors and tone of this quilt. It also is one of my favorite prints from this range and I had stashed yardage just for this purpose.

Left over pieces of fabric have been pieced together to make the binding for the quilt. I do love a good scrappy binding, especially when it includes pieces of dainty floral Liberty Tana Lawn.

Worn and Washed Strip Quilt - Work in Progress

Worn and Washed Strip Quilt - Work in Progress | Red Pepper Quilts

Last month I traveled to London and on to Birmingham for the Festival of Quilts. It is there that I picked up a bundle of reclaimed fabrics collated by Kim Porter under the Worn and Washed Fabrics label. Kim started Worn and Washed Fabrics after being inspired by both her love of patchwork quilts and seeing the beautiful prints and softness of pre-worn clothing. Kim sells reclaimed fabric bundles at quilt shows and markets.

I purchased several bundles including a blue/indigo bundle of reclaimed shirt fabrics (unfortunately I did not photograph it prior to opening it. It was beautifully packaged and once opened I cut straight into it!). The bundle included a variety of blue prints; florals, gingham, stripes, and several small pieces of Liberty Tana Lawn. All fabrics are cotton fabrics of various quality (thread count), freshly laundered and naturally dried.

I have added several more pieces of  reclaimed shirt fabrics as well as a range of Liberty Tana Lawn fabrics in navy, blue, black, and purple, all from stash. I was surprised by just how many complementary pieces of fabric I was able to pull from stash.

The bundle fabrics were all 5 inches wide and varied from 5 inches to 12 inches in length. As such a somewhat improvised Strip Quilt was the perfect design. I have set the fabrics against a background of yarn dyed fabric by Lecien. This fabric is 100 per cent cotton with the cross weave creating a textured appearance much like traditional linen. This fabric is similar in weight and cuts, presses and sews just like standard quilting cotton.

This quilt is a little different to my usual work and and unlike most of my other quilts progress is made with the use of my design wall floor. Once piece at a time, one row at a time. I get tempted to start sewing pieces of fabric, or rows, together which inevitably leads to having to unpick as I change my mind about layout. I am really happy with how the quilt has turned out although I have struggled with the irregularity of  fabric pieces and even the irregular height of the rows. I've kept self doubt at bay by focusing on the prints, the colors and the task of simple sewing.

Rita

Sunday Stash #299 Handcrafted and Handcrafted 2 by Alison Glass

Handcrafted by Alison Glass was released late last year and was followed more recently by a second and collection - Handcrafted 2 - which represents a continuation of an overall look that is unique.

Both collections are made entirely by hand (a process unique to Andover) and are a new interpretation of the ancient wax resist fabric dying art form (batik). It is made in Indonesia by people skilled with this technique. Many hands have gone into the making of this hand stamped and hand dyed cloth, and it is beautiful. The fabric is a slightly lighter than quilting cotton, and although technically there is a a right side, they are reversible.

Admittedly these two collections will push me to think and work outside of my comfort zone, and it has taken some time to add these to my stash. However the bright, modern colors, and clever interpretation of a style of fabrics that I would otherwise avoid has completely drawn me in. I am looking forward to working with these designs.

I love how this little quilt has turned out! The simplicity of the design really allows the fabrics and the colors to shine. I adore this eclectic mix of fabrics, both in terms of the prints as well as the textures of the base cloth. This quilt is an "I-Spy" of fabric as well as a modern "I-Spy" of creatures, animals, fruits, cars, flowers, which can serve as a great opportunity for storytelling with children.

A Scrap Buster Baby Quilt - A Finished Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts 2015

The quilting - closely spaced vertical lines - adds texture without detracting anything from the design and the fabrics. A minimal look but by no means a quick process.

For the back of the quilt I have used a much hoarded piece of fabric from Lu Summers - Summersville Collection. It is perfect for the back of this baby quilt. For the binding I have used a narrow green/white stripe (from the Ella's Basics range by Ella Blue).
