Liberty Tana Lawn and Collage Checkerboard Quilt

A Finished Quilt.

Straight back behind the sewing machine. I've had a wonderful two week holiday. Away from home and away from my sewing machine. I was very ready for a break from sewing and blogging and now feel refreshed and rearing to go!

I have started where I left off - with my Liberty Tana Lawn Checkerboard Quilt. I knew I'd be coming home to baste this quilt (not one of my favorite tasks) but I don't like to leave projects unfinished. The longer it sits around as a quilt top the less likely I am to finish it.

This quilt is one of my bigger quilts; certainly one of the bigger quilts made this year. The quilt measures 64 inches x 80 inches. It seemed a good idea at the time of piecing but less so whilst basting, quilting and taking photos. It was especially hard to get a good photo of the whole quilt.

The backing fabric is a Liberty Tana Lawn fabric and I purchased it especially for this quilt. I love these cheerful sunflowers! It is rather luxurious to have a quilt with an all Liberty backing fabric but I do think this quilt called for this special touch. And it is so soft!

My choices for binding fabric were somewhat limited as I don't have many pieces of Liberty fabric that are the full width of the fabric (I usually buy fat quarters or smaller pieces). It was therefore a choice between a very scrappy binding or using the trimmed pieces from my backing fabric. I went with the latter as these pieces were long and just wide enough, and therefore perfect for this task.

  2. This is very inspiring for me as I have a growing stash of Liberty fabrics which I have been a little unsure of what to do with them. Problem solved now! What size are the squares?

    1. Hi Debra - thank you for stopping by! The squares are 2" finished. I strip pieced this quilt using strips measuring 11" x 2.5" - see the Checkerboard Strip Piecing Tutorial here:

  8. So pretty!! You've inspired me to get on board with a Liberty of the Month club....I loved your Liberty and Grey one from a few weeks back. I'd decided to go twin-ish size too and am wondering how much yardage you needed for the backing?

  14. LOVE the backing Rita. I think the backing is so important..like the foundation on which to build...or the ground floor of a yummy department store.

  18. Glad you had a relaxing vacation. It is kinda liberating to stay away from the computer for awhile. I was in the UK last month with no internet and I have to say...I read a whole book and lost a couple pounds from all the walking AND ate a lot of good food!:)

  19. Very beautiful quilt, I am itching to sew today but I must attend family birthday which will be fun too! Maybe I will bring my machine on the pretext I am teaching them to sew! Bad grandma ok I am going. The binding process for me is my favorite as I get to let my mind drift to my next sewing project. My hardest task is a label . I always need several bandages later, I don't know why I stick myself so many times.
