I love my collection of "low volume" fabrics and have thoroughly enjoyed working with these pretty fabrics for the last few weeks! This quilt includes many fabric favorites and as often is the case I have added fabrics with a pop of color for interest. When it comes to color I find it difficult to restrain myself. Every scraps counts and I am therefore also pleased to have used up the many left over fabric strips from my previous quilt project (Herringbone Quilt).

The quilt is randomly scattered with printed novelty fabrics; anything from  from flowers to fruits, fish, insects, birds, cats, faces, mermaids, ballerinas, text, and more. These fabric pieces were fussy cut to feature those designs and add interest as well as a fun "I-Spy" element.

I have quilted the quilt by first ditch stitching all horizontal and vertical seam lines around all of the blocks, then adding additional lines to create a grid of closely spaced lines by the following seam lines around the center square of each block.

For the back of the quilt I have my usual backing fabric: Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston and the binding fabric is a soft pink and white stripe from the Petite Basics collection by Sevenberry for Robert Kaufman Fabrics.

This week I am going to be using some of the 2 inch squares that I have been cutting from fabrics scraps for most of this year. Rather than adding small pieces of fabric to my scrap bins - where they may well disappear in amongst the many odd size pieces of fabric - I have cut my fabric scraps into 2" squares. There are many squares (!) and I am confident that I can pull a quilt out of that box. I am so looking forward to this project.

Sunday Stash #410 The English Garden by Liberty of London

The English Garden by Liberty of London | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
The English Garden ~ Liberty of London
Quilting Cotton

Internationally recognised as a leader in print design and textiles, Liberty Fabrics have been creating original and inspiring designs since 1875. The English Garden collection is a collection of floral designs created specifically for quilting. Some of the printed designs are re-drawn artworks from our archive, their roots dating back to the early 1900s.

The English Garden is a limited edition collection of 100% cotton quilting fabrics. The color palette reflects the feel of a classic English Rose Garden with soft, pastel hues and chalky tones, and features iconic floral and graphic designs collated from Liberty archives. All Liberty fabrics are printed using traditional printing techniques which ensure a deep penetration of ink dye for a high-quality finish.

The complete collection features 23 fabrics (not all are shown here) printed on Lasenby 100% cotton which is of a quality specifically woven for quilters. It has been too long since the last quilting cotton collection by Liberty of London (see Bloomsbury Gardens collection), so I am rather pleased to see this new quilting cotton collection and news that more such collections are on the way!

Bright Hopes Quilt - Work in Progress and Tutorial

Bright Hopes Quilt and Tutorial | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
Bright Hopes Quilt and Tutorial | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

This week I have been working with the leftover strips of fabric from my Herringbone Quilt. It is unusual for me to have left over fabric pieces from a quilt; I am more likely to have cut too few than too many patchwork pieces for a quilt (especially this many). And I really didn't want to see stack of pretty fabric strips disappear into the overflowing scrap bin, so these were set aside for a quilt I have been looking forward to making for a while ....

The Bright Hopes Quilt Block is a traditional patchwork block and a perfect introduction to sewing a block/quilt with a partial-sewn seam. ONE part-sewn seam :: no tricky y-seams involved!

BRIGHT HOPES BLOCK TUTORIAL:

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS ~ block measures 5 inches x 5 inches (includes seam allowances.
For each Bright Hopes block you need one center square and four rectangles:
Bright Hopes Quilt Block Tutorial | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
STEP 1
Take a center square and align edge along the edge of the rectangle (right sides together). Using a 1/4" seam sew partial - seam as pictured (see yellow stitching in diagram below). Back stitch to secure the seam. Press seam allowance away from the center square.

STEP 2

Continue by adding more rectangles along the center square in an anti-clockwise direction:
1. YELLOW SEAM - partial seam.
2.  RED SEAM - full seam.
3.  PURPLE SEAM - full seam.
4.  BLACK SEAM - full seam.
5.  WHITE SEAM - partial seam (see step 3 below).

Press all seams away from the center square.

STEP 3
Line up the long edge of the first sewn rectangle (dark blue) along the block and complete the seam (seam pictured below in white). Press seam away from the center square.

Finished Bright Hopes Quilt block measures 4 ½" x 4 ½" (does NOT include seam allowances).

Cutting instructions for alternative FINISHED block sizes:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
3" FINISHED BLOCK: cut 1 ½ inch square - cut 1 ½" x 2 ½" rectangles.
6" FINISHED BLOCK: cut 2 ½ inch square - cut 2 ½" x 4 ½" rectangles.
7 ½" FINISHED BLOCK: cut 3 inch square - cut 3" x 5 ½" rectangles.
9" FINISHED BLOCK: cut 3 ½ inch square - cut 3 ½" x 6 ½" rectangles.
12" FINISHED BLOCK: cut 4 ½ inch square - cut 4 ½" x 8 ½" rectangles.

For this quilt I have used may of my "low volume" fabrics; printed fabrics on a light/white background. Where do I purchase these fabrics? I have been collecting low volume fabrics for several years and many fabric collection now have one or two low volume prints - a design printed on a white/light background (not necessarily tone on tone). Brenda at Pink Castle Fabrics regularly collates FQ bundles of Low Volume Fabrics (and Text Fabric Bundles), and check out the Low Volume fabric category at Stash Fabrics for more!

For many of the Bright Hopes blocks I have used a colorful center square, which were an addition to my leftover fabric strips. I have been cutting and collecting 2" squares for most of the year, so these came in handy for this quilt. There's a lot to see! This quilt is scattered with I-Spy elements from flowers to fruits, fish, birds, cats, faces, mermaids, ballerinas, fish, text, and more.

A Low Volume Herringbone Quilt

A Finished Quilt and as always lots of photos ~
Low Volume Herringbone Quilt | A Finished Quilt | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017
A Low Volume Herringbone Quilt
Click on any image for a larger view.
My Low Volume Herringbone Quilt is finished! I have thoroughly enjoyed making this quilt and I am pleased to have added a new technique to my sewing repertoire in the process. This was my first time piecing together a quilt top with partial seams, and while a Herringbone Quilt (with all part-sewn seams) is maybe not a slow/easy introduction to partial seams, I don't mind diving in head first. Just remember to take it one step at a time and it will all work out just fine!

Low Volume Herringbone Quilt | A Finished Quilt | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

For piecing this quilt top I followed the instructions from the book Modern Quilt Magic: 5 Parlor Tricks to Expand Your Piecing Skills by Victoria Findlay Wolfe. The step by step instructions were clear and easy to follow. Once I got the general gist of the process there was no looking back and the quilt top came together well.

I love working with my low volume fabric stash so with this quilt I was literally in fabric heaven. Low volume fabric to me is a design on a white/light background and as you can see my version of low volume is in fact quite colorful (and busy!). And because I love small patchwork piecing for an all over scrappy quilt, I have chosen to work with relatively small fabric pieces (each fabric strips was cut 2 inches x 4.5 inches).

Low Volume Herringbone Quilt | A Finished Quilt | © Red Pepper Quilts 2017

The quilt has been quilted by professional long arm quilter - Karen Terrens from Quilts on Bastings - with an edge to edge pantograph featuring a Denyse Schmidt style loop-de-loop design. I have used my preferred batting - Warm and White by the Warm Company - a bleached white cotton batting that is ideal for a quilt made using white/light fabric, and also gives the quilt a low loft result that I really like.

For the back of the quilt I have my usual backing fabric: Newsprint from the Story collection by Carrie Bloomston and the binding fabric is a soft pink and white stripe by Moda Fabrics (Essentially Yours in Baby Pink).

This week I am working on using up all the left over strips of fabric from this low volume quilt. And there were many left over strips of fabric! Well, enough to just about make another such quilt. Let's say that my new project does involve sewing more partial seams, however not as many as was required to piece this quilt!
