Outback Wife - Courthouse Steps Quilt

Work in Progress ... lots of photos!

Outback Wife 2017 and Essentials by Gertrude Made (the solids, gingham, and yarn dyed fabrics) are the most recently released fabric collections by Cathi Bessell-Browne for Ella Blue Fabrics - Cathi is an Australian designer and dressmaker with a passion for vintage floral fabrics. It is no secret that I love fabric and even though these colors and large scale floral designs are not usual style I was immediately drawn to them, and was thrilled to receive a complimentary bundle of both collections from Cathi and Ella Blue Fabrics.

Over the festive season these fabric bundles were never far from my sight; propped neatly on my cutting table awaiting inspiration to strike. Every time I walked past I wondered if cutting the beautiful large scale floral designs into small patchwork pieces would not be the best use of these fabrics, but my instincts told me to go for it. I played with several traditional quilt designs including Log Cabin and Flying Geese blocks, before settling on Courthouse Steps blocks and working with light/dark fabrics for contrast in the design of the quilt.

The Outback Wife range of fabrics are barkcloth fabrics; soft, thick, slightly textured cotton fabric heavier in weight than standard quilting cotton, but no more difficult to handle, cut, sew, and press, than quilting cotton. The barkcloth fabric base has a gorgeous texture and is much softer than I had anticipated. The barkcloth fabrics also worked well with both the yarn-dyed fabrics and quilting weight gingham/stripe fabrics from the Essentials range. Furthermore, I did not hesitate to add several linen and linen blend fabrics (as well as quilting cottons) from stash into the mix. Texture + texture + texture!

The use of the heavier weight fabrics means that this quilt top is significantly heavier than my usual quilt tops. It is heavy in a good way though ... perfect for a cold Winter's night in front of the TV and providing comfort when used on a bed. I am planning to further add to the weight of the quilt by piecing a quilt back from the larger pieces of leftover barkcloth fabrics.

Mandolin Quilt - Tales of Cloth Quilt Club 2018

(photo by Jodi from Tales of Cloth and used with permission)

I have started a new English Paper Piecing (EPP) project! My Liberty Stars Quilt is almost finished (I just need to hand slip stitch the binding and take lots of photos), so it was serendipitous that when Jodi from Tales of Cloth asked me to participate in the new Tales of Cloth - Mandolin Quilt Club 2018 it so happened that I had been busy looking for my next EPP project.

The Mandolin Quilt is an English Paper Piecing project designed by Jodi, and is offered as a monthly subscription; this intricate quilt has been broken down into bite size pieces for a fun and enjoyable slow sewing experience. There are 20 blocks in the quilt, plus 12 setting blocks, and 16 edge and corner blocks. The club will go for 12 months, and the papers to piece the blocks, setting blocks, edge and corner blocks are evenly shipped over the 12 month period.

The sample quilt made by Jodi features the Wonderland collection by Rifle Paper Co. For my Mandolin Quilt I have decided to go scrappy - working from stash - and so far I am pretty happy with the celebration of color and fabric that it is turning out to be. You'll see many of my stash fabric favorites (gingham, dots, tiny florals)!

Furthermore, seeing the blocks and quilts made by other club participants will continue to inspire and motivate your every stitch (see Instagram #mandolinquilt).

I am thoroughly enjoying stitching these blocks together. (In case you're wondering, I am a glue baster and whip stitcher, and I am pretty pleased with my stitches). Six blocks have been completed and I have prepared papers for a further six blocks. There is still much to be done but the year 2018 is still young. I'll be sharing updates of my quilt in progress throughout the year.

I hope you'll join me on my Mandolin Quilt journey!
Rita

KINDER BY HEATHER ROSS
FOR WINDHAM FABRICS

I am pretty pleased that I was able to get my hands on a bundle of the soon to be released Kinder collection by Heather Ross. The collection is inspired by Heather's daughter Beatrix's year in kindergarten; the colors are straight from the rainbows that Heather's daughter and her classmates made at the beginning of the school year.

This is such a fun children's collection! The color palette is fresh and the designs are super sweet. The apples are a favorite as well as the alphabet prints is great for personalising handmade items as well as providing a fun "I-Spy" element. And then there are the frogs ...

Alice Caroline ~ Alpine Symphony and A Pocket Full of Memories

Alice Caroline, Liberty fabric specialists are delighted to launch two brand new Liberty fabric collections, Alpine Symphony and A Pocket Full of Memories for the Spring / Summer 2018 season.

Alpine Symphony is a delightful collection of sweeping mountain vistas and wild flower meadows, and is a celebration of nature at its purest. The name Alpine Symphony was inspired by the Richard Strauss musical composition from 1915 – this dramatic piece of music explores from daybreak to nightfall the experience of climbing and descending an alpine mountain. Both the piece and the Liberty collection explore the emotional reactions to being awestruck by nature, its beauty, scale and power.

The collection reflects the beauty in landscape and all the things that it can give - from extremely pretty alpine flowers to birds soaring the skies and animals hunting in the forests. Some of the names of the fabrics take inspiration from well-known characters linked to alpine mountains such as Heidi and the children of the Von-Trapp family. (Sound of Music). The collection includes themes such as On Flowering Meadows, Alpine Symphony, Fair Isle, Floral Orchestra, Heidi, and The Hills are Alive, which range from a tessellation of alpine animals to the blooming summer meadows, bursting with colour and life.

Alpine Symphony ~ Liberty of London Tana Lawn

A Pocket Full of Memories is the new childrenswear collection for the Spring Summer 2018 season. The inspiration behind this collection is of a child’s journey of exploration through a bustling city. From glorious gardens to magnificent museums, inspiring archives and splendid art galleries, the day is an action-packed adventure of stunning sights, sensational sounds and dazzling discoveries. This collection is a joyful collection of 16 original Liberty designs inspired by this marvellous day out. The designs have been inspired by the costume archive in the V&A, dinosaur designs by a trek to the Natural History Museum and flight inspired designs from a zooming visit to the Science Museum.

Pocket Full of Memories - Liberty of London Tana Lawn

Alice Caroline is delighted to showcase these two wonderful collections to the world of sewing and lovers of fabric. This collection is designed with high fashion in mind and we can’t wait to start dressmaking and of course quilt making. There is so much beauty and inspiration in the designs of these fabrics – both create a riot of colour and design from which to work.

Both collections are available online now at www.alicecaroline.co.uk:
Alice Caroline stocks huge range of classic, new season and exclusive prints (more than 500 Liberty fabrics to choose from!) carefully curated to ensure they offer the best and, most lovely fabric Liberty has to offer. All fabrics ship worldwide.
