Liberty Tana Lawn Pincushions

It's been a Pincushion kind of week!  I have made a a total of eleven pincushions this week, and ironically have been treated like a pincushion myself this week with tests, appointments, procedures and infusions.  Really, I would rather be sewing ...

These Log Cabin Liberty Tana Lawn Pincushions measure just 6 inches x 6 inches and are from the book Liberty Love: 25 Projects to Quilt & Sew Featuring Liberty of London Fabrics by Alexia Marcelle Abegg. (see my book review here).

Feeling inspired to keep going with the pincushion theme I made another six simple patchwork pincushions, again using Liberty Tana Lawn - cutting and sewing 200+ individual 1.5 inch squares.  A batch of pincushions is easy and fun to whip up and they make a great gift for quilting/sewing friends (and with only 66 days till Christmas now is a good time to get started).

All of the pincushions offered for sale have already been sold.  I know, that's good news for me, but disappointing if you were looking to purchase.  I hope to make a few more pincushions by the end of November and they will then be listed in my Etsy Store.

Well, I am grateful to be back on my feet and look forward to being more (sewing) productive next week.

Inspiration

Inspiration for my quilts come from far and wide.  I love scouring books, magazines, Etsy, blogs and Flickr for inspiration.  Just recently I happened to be at the right place at the right time, when Victoria from The Silly BooDilly updated her Etsy Store. 

I could not resist this gorgeous pincushion pieced with iridescent shot cottons, featuring both machine and hand quilting.  I absolutely love Victoria's unique style of patchwork and quilting inspired by Japanese Boro Textiles.

This pincushion sits alongside my sewing machine, has been admired from every angle, and has inspired me to pull out a selection of my Kaffe Shot Cottons:

Around the Block

I am participating in the Around the Block Swap, which involves making two blocks for a participant from fabrics that they have sent to you. The person whose turn it is to send the fabrics does provide some guidance as to how they like their blocks to look. By the end of the month that person will have enough blocks to complete a quilt top.

Kate from One Flew Over was the first to send out her fabrics and I have really enjoyed playing with her them. I love the fabrics Kate has chosen and I was keen to get started on making these blocks straight away.

Kate included in her fabrics these cute (and hard to find!) Heather Ross fabrics. I can understand what the fuss is all about, the little pictures, although dainty, are detailed and just plain gorgeous! They are definitely on my stash wish list!

I have also received this gorgeous gift in the mail. This pincushion was made by Mel from From Little Things...

Thank you Mel, I love it! Believe it or not, I actually did not have a pincushion, so it will definitely be much loved and often used.

Both this week and last week I have spent some time completing custom orders for Liberty Tana Lawn Pincushions. I can't say enough about Liberty Tana Lawn fabric; the high quality cotton is finely woven and super soft to touch. Exquisite. Luxurious. It is a pleasure to work with.

Patchwork Please!

Patchwork, Please! by Ayumi Takahashi

I am a huge fan and regular reader of Ayumi's blog - Pink Penguin - as well as a stalker of Ayumi's Etsy Store, so when Ayumi's book hit the stores I was on to it.  It arrived in my mail box late last week and I can tell you that the projects in the book reflect Ayumi's fun and playful style.  Ayumi has a unique eye for color and her quirky vintage patchwork style is one that I rather adore.

Patchwork, Please! includes a chapter on Tools and Materials but importantly also a section on Techniques (including comprehensive Paper Piecing instructions).  The projects in the book are divided into categories: for the kitchen, for kids, for the home, going places, and for crafting. It is in the for crafting section that you will find the Prettified Pincushion - also featured on the cover of the book - which I just had to make.  Or three ...

The instructions were clear and accurate - and although I wasn't confident that I could assemble the sides as neatly as pictured in the book, by simply following the step by step instructions I was able to complete the project successfully and eagerly made two more pincushions.  

Congratulations, Ayumi on a really great publication! There are many more projects in the book that I have bookmarked for making including the Swedish Bloom Quilt as well as a new set of potholders for my kitchen.

Also finished this week is a custom order; a re-make of the Liberty Patchwork Pillow Cover made earlier this month, and already on it's ways across the ocean.

This time around I have used a special hand screen printed fabric by Umbrella Prints - Perfect Circles Printed in Lily White on Natural Organic mid-weight cotton for the back of the pillow cover.

25 Projects to Quilt & Sew Featuring Liberty of London Fabrics

I love fabric. Bet you knew that already! I have been collecting Liberty Tana Lawn slowly and steadily for a number of years.  When I spotted the release of Alexia's book featuring Liberty fabrics I knew I had to get my hands on a copy.

Bursting at the seams with 25 different projects this little pincushion project called my name. Pronto ~ get out the rotary cutter and the Tana Lawn stash! These fabrics are so delightful to work with.

And I couldn't just make one!  I don't think you can ever have too many pincushions.  Right?

These will also make great gifts for quilting and sewing buddies.

(I have used Robert Kaufman EssexYarn Dyed in Flax for the back).

It was an excellent weekend.

Quilting On The Go: English Paper Piecing 
by Sharon Burgess

Quilting on the Go: English Paper Piecing is Sharon Burgess' debut publication for Tuva Publishing. In her book Sharon shares her love for English Paper Piecing and fussy cutting. The book is a comprehensive resource guide for English Paper Piecing and includes chapters on technique (glue basting, preparing papers, joining pieces, strip cutting, hand stitching, and of course fussy cutting). All the EPP basics available at your fingertips.

In addition, the book includes step by step patterns for a number of projects ranging from small ~ mini quilt, cushion, bunting, zipper pouch, journal cover, pincushion and needle keeper, and placemat ~ to bigger projects like a table runner and quilts. All of which involve English Paper Piecing.

Sharon's Celestial Star Quilt (pictured below) is simply magnificent and this original design is also included in the book, complete with detailed instructions and diagrams for all of the units, and templates for quilters keen to cut their own papers. Complete laser cut paper pieces kits are available for purchase separately for this and several other projects in Sharon's book. 

As soon as I received my copy of the book for review my fingers were itching to start a project. Having yet to finish my current EPP project I have no business starting another, however a small project doesn't count, right? Here is my version of Sharon's Star Cushion ~ I couldn't stop at just making a few stars and so my cushion turned out a little bigger ....

I LOVED making this cushion cover; it provided me with the perfect excuse to sit and sew during several rather cold and wintery days here in Melbourne. I have used Liberty of London Tana Lawn for the stars and for the background fabric I have used beautiful Oakshott cotton from the Scandinavia range in Stockholm (grey); a match made in fabric heaven. I will publish more photos and all the details of my Star Pillow in a separate blog post later this week.
