The finished quilt measures 55 inches x 66 inches.
396 house pieces and 22 half-house pieces.
Machine pieced - inset seams.
Machine quilted.

This was such a fun project to work on! Fun because I love a good scrap buster quilt - I do actually enjoy methodically working my way through my fabric stash and cutting a small piece here and there for whatever project I am working on - and I love to continue challenging my sewing skills (although these inset seams are not as tricky as they look!).
I have quilted this quilt by first ditch-stitching all of the straight horizontal seam lines, and then adding vertical lines of stitching through both the center of each of the little houses as well as in the seam of the houses. This has created a rectangular grid of quilting lines, adding interest in an understated way, and allowing the fabrics to tell the story. There is a lot to see!
For the back of the quilt I have used a
For the quilt binding I have stayed true to my signature style ... a black and white stripe fabric. This particular black/white stripe fabric is by Sevenberry; the stripe is a regular repeat however the black stripe is slightly narrower in width than the white stripe.

I LOVE the backing fabric and so wish I had some of that particular Denyse Schmidt collection. I have two other fat quarter bundles of her fabric. I'm trying not to hoard it...what to make? Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteRita, Your quilts are so inspiring. They are so colorful, whimsical and expertly put together. Do you prewash your fabric? I am in awe of how crisp and perfectly lined up your pieces are, no matter the design. Do you spray starch the fabric before cutting? How do you press it after it's sewn? Dry or steam iron? I'm asking because I don't prewash and my piecing is buckling or shrinking when I iron. I can't seem to get results that work with a dry iron. Do you have any suggestions? ReplyDeleteThis is a sweet quilt. Chain stitching inset seams is challenging, but it can be done perfectly just as shown by your careful hands. I love the quilting too
