Mandolin Quilt - Tales of Cloth Quilt Club 2018

(photo by Jodi from Tales of Cloth and used with permission)

I have started a new English Paper Piecing (EPP) project! My Liberty Stars Quilt is almost finished (I just need to hand slip stitch the binding and take lots of photos), so it was serendipitous that when Jodi from Tales of Cloth asked me to participate in the new Tales of Cloth - Mandolin Quilt Club 2018 it so happened that I had been busy looking for my next EPP project.

The Mandolin Quilt is an English Paper Piecing project designed by Jodi, and is offered as a monthly subscription; this intricate quilt has been broken down into bite size pieces for a fun and enjoyable slow sewing experience. There are 20 blocks in the quilt, plus 12 setting blocks, and 16 edge and corner blocks. The club will go for 12 months, and the papers to piece the blocks, setting blocks, edge and corner blocks are evenly shipped over the 12 month period.

The sample quilt made by Jodi features the Wonderland collection by Rifle Paper Co. For my Mandolin Quilt I have decided to go scrappy - working from stash - and so far I am pretty happy with the celebration of color and fabric that it is turning out to be. You'll see many of my stash fabric favorites (gingham, dots, tiny florals)!

The wonderful thing about English Paper Piecing is that anyone can accurately complete an intricate quilt top - beginner and more experienced quilters alike - and the arrival of your monthly Club papers will encourage you to keep going. Furthermore, seeing the blocks and quilts made by other club participants will continue to inspire and motivate your every stitch (see Instagram #mandolinquilt).

I am thoroughly enjoying stitching these blocks together. (In case you're wondering, I am a glue baster and whip stitcher, and I am pretty pleased with my stitches). Six blocks have been completed and I have prepared papers for a further six blocks. There is still much to be done but the year 2018 is still young. I'll be sharing updates of my quilt in progress throughout the year.

I hope you'll join me on my Mandolin Quilt journey!
Rita

  1. Your quilt is a stunner especialy since it involves so much hand work. The new one is gorgeous as well. It should take awhile to get that done. Your fabric choices are beautiful.
