Two Block Patchwork Quilt ~ Work in Progress

My quilt in progress this week is inspired by snippets of a vintage quilt that are pictured in the book Warman's Vintage Quilts: Identification And Price Guide by Maggi McCormick Gordon. While this book was written for the purpose of identifying and valuing vintage quilts, it features color photos of 300+ vintage quilts created mainly between 1850 and 1960, many of which are traditional quilt designs. I love paging though this book to study the layouts, and the use of fabric and color for each design.

In the book this particular quilt design is called Two-Block Crib Quilt - maker unknown - and dated C1900. The notes describe the quilt as cotton prints, solids and stripes. Muslin binding. Tied with pink cotton yarn. I love that this quilt is made from two simple patchwork blocks ~ an Hourglass Block and a Rail Fence Block, alternated throughout, and that the fabrics used were similar to those that I reach for and combine often in my quilts.

For my quilt I have similarly chosen small scale prints and stash basics. There are dots, stripes, checks, and gingham prints as well as pretty floral designs and text fabric, all in a soft color palette, contrasted with darker prints as well as a range of low volume prints. Included also are several hand screen printed linen fabrics, a few reclaimed vintage fabrics, and a number of solid fabrics. When looking at the finished quilt top I usually see arrows pointing up and down, sometimes stars, or if I switch my focus to the low volume fabrics I see squares set on point.
