Outback Wife is the debut collection of Cathi Bessell-Browne, the hands and heart behind Gertrude Made. Cathi is a dressmaker from rural Western Australia. Cathi's passion is for vintage floral fabrics which she uses to make a selection of unique dresses.

Bindi in Blue, Pink, Purple and Yellow
Inspired by the beautiful floral bark cloth fabrics of the 1940s and 1950s, the details of this collection have been carefully considered to create a range with an authentic vintage voice. The hand-painted floral designs are printed on an exclusive cotton bark cloth base and tell the story of four Australian rural women: Bindi, Kirstine, Elaine, and Mary (click on the links to read the story of these four inspiring women). Outback Wife is an ode to the strength, passion and courage of rural women across Australia.

Produced in Japan the fabrics are 150cm wide, are lightly textured, a medium to light weight (they are slightly heavier than quilting cotton) with a soft hand and medium drape. The bark cloth fabric is carefully woven to create a vintage feel and the quality of the prints are exceptional. These fabrics are so far from my usual style - and my purchase has raised a few eyebrows with strong reactions, it seems you either love them or ... not - however I am drawn to these and cannot wait to make a quilt with them. There are several more prints that form part of this collection but not shown here today.

  1. Interesting...I must admit I'm on the fence about them too! I don't think it's anything I would ever buy (or KNOW how to use) but can't wait to see what your creativity does with them! I did go to her site, however, and was very impressed with the way her dresses look---they remind me of charming dresses from the 50s & 60s---very lovely.

  2. I've been seeing these prints now for a couple weeks and they are growing on me. But I haven't a clue what I would do with them. Look forward to seeing what you create.

  3. Oh my this post really caught my eye as I have some fabrics which were my granny's from about the 50's (I think) that look very much the same. I love this collection and cannot wait to see what you create with them.

  5. I adore this fabric. I have some curtains my mom made back in the 50s when they lived on an US army base in Germany (my dad was not military, he was a State Department Auditor) I HAVE those curtains.
They are EXACTLY like this fabric. They have been safely packed away. I thought they would make a fabulous skirt. I am not a skirty person anymore, too drafty, and they are not really "my color" either but they are gorgeous.
    I should pull them out.
All of these are STUNNINGLY beautiful. Oh I could imagine a couple of very lovely things to make.

  6. These are really lovely in a vintage-y manner... they bring back so many memories - old curtains, umbrella skirts and even a much-loved table cloth with crochet edging!

Your recent quilts have all been as fabulous as ever... I saw all of them but did not get a chance to comment. I really liked the scrap busting Irish chain quilt.

  9. Yes, they are a long way from what you would normally choose. So, what are your plans for them. Can't wait to see.

  10. I love these. I just picked up some vintage floral bark cloth at a resale (charity) shop. It's still in the planning stage but look forward to quilting with it!
