The Fall Quilt - Work in Progress

The Fall Quilt | Work in Progress | Red Pepper Quilts 2015

A new week and a new project. I am calling this project The Fall Quilt, even though in Australia we say Autumn rather than Fall, and it is in fact Spring right now rather than Fall. This project was never going to be a quilt in the colors that so remind me of Fall. Instead, this was going to be my Red Quilt.

A Red Quilt. But during the process of pulling and cutting fabric I lost my way, and my vision. I don't usually plan my projects on paper and I rarely sketch or draw to plan a color palette, preferring to work directly and instinctively with color from my fabric stash. This works for me. Most of the time.

I was however too invested in my project to ditch it and start again, and I was confident that not all was lost. So I let go of my Red Quilt - for now - and pressed on creating a color palette that suited the warm but stormy weather (for Spring is unpredictable in Melbourne). Red, Yellow, Pink, Brown. Black, White, and Grey.

QUILT STATS
I have again followed the same piecing method as per the
to piece this quilt top (although I have cut my fabric strips wider and longer).
A selection more than 130 different quilting cottons were cut
as strips measuring 3.0 inches x 13 inches (this will make more sense when
read in conjunction with the strip piecing tutorial).
I made 36 16-patch blocks ~  a total of 576 patches of fabric,
Quilt top measures 60 inches x 60 inches.

I love how this quilt top has turned out. I especially love how the yellow fabrics bring warmth and light to this quilt! Yellow is a color that I have used carefully and sparingly in the past, and (like my use of the color purple) I am slowly working to change that.

  6. I love this quilt. I have learned a lot from you, the being more freestyle and just grabbing and trying fabrics. I am working on two quilt tops. One is strictly The Morris Jewels and Kaffe Fassets Paperweight both in charm squares and the blocks are amazing. The only thing I have been deviating from is the solid fabrics, cool beige kona, and now I found some matching subtle prints.
My other projects is all fabrics like this, except orange in this one.
    They are both fun.
I like this quilt a lot
I wish I had more time to sew

  7. Another quilt that has me diving into my scrap bins! I adore everything you do and want to make it all. The trouble is you're so fast I can't keep up! Thank you for the continued inspiration. I just may cut a few strips today ; )

  8. This may have taken a "left turn" from your original vision, but I think it may be exactly the right thing after all. It's beautiful. Not overwhelming. And that yellow in the mix is the right, happy, zing. I find, for my own quilting, sometimes the accidents in sewing end up being my favorite creations.

  10. I am so envious of your ability and your stash. I heart square quilts. I just like the look of them but I shy away from making them because of the amount of backing fabric required vs. a rectangle quilt. On the other hand, you're probably able to just throw your excess into your stash for another quilt. I think I need to begin going with more neutral-ish backings so I can also do this. Great job!

  12. I wonder at your fabrics, I never see these at our quilt stores. I made the checkerboard quilt out of Kaffe Fasset charm squares, cutting them in quarters. It turned out to be one of my favorite quilt tops. I love your quilts !

  14. I always love these 16-patch quilts that you do. I'm going to do one in all 30's with a bunch of left-over strips. Thanks for the great tutorial on strip-piecing. Kay
