Nine Patch Checkerboard Quilt - Part I

A progress report in pictures.
Nine Patch Checkerboard Quilt | Red Pepper Quilts

A new week and a new project, but that's not to say that I whipped up this quilt top in a day, or even two days! The traditional Nine Patch block is one of my favorite blocks ~ simple patchwork with endless possibilities. It is my recent foray into Checkerboard Quilts that has led me to create the dark/light layout of a checkerboard quilt with a simple Nine Patch Block. Different but the same.

I have made each nine-patch block with just two fabrics (a light fabric, and a dark/er fabric) and I have alternated the layout of the fabrics; one Nine Patch block has a dark center fabric and matching corner fabrics, and the next Nine Patch block has a light center fabric with matching corner fabrics, thereby creating  a checkerboard look when the blocks are alternated.

Like many of my quilts this one is all about the fabrics, the colors and the prints. I love each and every one of the fabrics used in this quilt top and hand picked fabrics for each block individually. I always try not to over think the choosing fabrics/colors process but do worry about the quilt being "too scrappy or too busy". It is often not till the end when I lay out and arrange the blocks that I see how it is all going to work (or not). Often I am pleasantly surprised. Scrappy is good.

  6. I've been cutting 2" squares from my scraps with the intention of doing a postage stamp quilt. But now I think I might switch my plans a little and do this nine-patch pattern. Love it!

  11. Do you press your seams open when you do this type of quilt? I have contemplated this type of quilt using a bunch of mini charms that I have on hand and don't know how to plan so the the seams nest.

  13. I love this! The colors are soft. I can see the thinking on your part when choosing fabrics. It helps me too because I have had a difficult time starting with 2.5 squares and my 9-patches finishing at a 6 in block. I thought of starting with 3" but wondered if the center block would be larger. I'm going to try. Thank you. jlblvn at gmail dot com
