A Classic Patchwork Quilt

And a Picture Post.

I have had such a wonderful week making this quilt ~ easy patchwork sewing with quality fabrics (including some of my favorite Liberty of London Tana Lawn fabrics) and just enough fabric play with a classic color palette to satisfy my need for creativity.

I cannot say enough about the quality and gorgeous texture of the background fabric (Melange Yarn Dyed Cottons by Lecien - more details here). It has all of the great qualities of traditional linen fabric but without any of the impracticalities that come with sewing and using linen; and like I had anticipated it quilted beautifully.

I have quilted this quilt with a set of edge to edge double lines, stitching approximately 3/4 inch on either side of all seam lines.  Stitching double quilting lines was double the work but it was well worth it for the extra texture and the additional stitches that feature so prominently on the background cotton.

For the back of the quilt I have used a single fabric - Script Britton Nummer Fabric for IKEA by Emma Jones.  The modern large text backing fabric is a strong contrast for this otherwise traditional patchwork quilt but they truly complement one another.

And black/white striped binding fabric. I couldn't resist, it was an obvious choice.

This quilt is for sale and it is listed in my Etsy Store.

The listing is here: Classic Patchwork Quilt.

Have a great weekend ~ ours is a long one with a public holiday on Monday (Labour Day)!

  3. Beautiful! I love how you put the unexpected items together -- the reds and pinks with the linen like fabric and the text backing and the black and white stiped binding!

  4. Is your double stitching done with a twin needle? I love the way it looks.

  6. Gorgeous quilt once again! I adore that backing fabric. I don't have an IKEA near me. Closest is 2.5 hour drive. I would go if I could be sure I could get a large quantity of that number words fabric. It goes with almost everything and I love it!

  8. another great quilt, I must look out for the linen look fabric. The ikea fabric is so very popular as backing, I have seen it quite a bit on quilts done by the modern quilters group that I belong to. If course when I went to Ikea a couple of weeks ago they did not have any but got a couple of other fabrics to add to my stash

  10. Tana Lawn and linen, what a perfect combination, I do not think I would have been so brave to use the black binding, but it really does look lovely! Thank you for sharing. Sarah xo

  11. The colours are perfect. And you've used one of my favourite Liberty Lawns - Kinnear - flowery but not too girly.

  14. The linen look fabric is great. I used the same backing fabric on a quilt for my sister. Love the fact that it's wide and such a great price. I cleaned out the Clayton ikea a while ago and when I was there recently they still hadn't restocked. I love the liberty prints in the quilt also great job :)

  15. The backing fabric I have used several times too. The price: 1/6 of what patchwork fabric cost here in Denmark, makes it an easy choice.

  16. Do you wash the ikea fabric before using it? Does it shrink at the same rate as other fabrics?

  20. That is really pretty! I saw some linen today in my local quilt shop and thought how nice it would look in a quilt - very sophisticated - and your quilt certainly does look wonderful!

  22. As always a beautiful finish Rita! Would you mind sharing how the Britten is to work with? I recently bought my first batch and was surprised at the thinness. Do you prewash? Does it give the quilt a flimsy feeling? Does the thinness create shifting while quilting?
