Oakshott [workinprogress]

Like I said ~ Use it or Lose it.  This stunning colorbox of Oakshott cottons has been a sitting idle in my fabric stash since, dare I say, March last year.  It has been much admired but, not willing to mess around with the color arrangement, it hasn't seen a lot of action.

That has all changed this week.  I have popped the lid, messed up the colors, and got busy with the rotary cutter and sewing machine. What took me so long?!

Oakshott cottons are a fine quality fabrics which are ethically hand loomed, in an environmentally friendly way, in the south of India. The cotton weave is shot - with a warp and weft of different tones - which creates a beautiful luminous and iridescent hue.  And so beautiful to work with!

It has taken me a few days to sew this quilt top.  Working with these fabrics and endless color combinations was simply delightful.  I was in my element.

A whole bunch of squares.  I am thinking of writing a pattern - with quick and easy piecing instructions.  But first:  BQB - basting, quilting, binding.

Thank you for stopping by.

  7. Absolutely beautiful quilt Rita! I love how the simple piecing really lets the Oakshott fabrics shine. I just bought their new sunrise FQ pack - maybe I will use it for something similar.

  16. Beautiful work! I won a colorbox in a giveaway last December, and so far I only opened the lid, petted and admired the fabric. I should just do as you did and dive in!

  20. I've been eyeing that colorbox for a while now and your wonderful post may just be my tipping point! Knowing that the combinations and outcome will look as lovely as what you've shown are further proof that hanging on/petting/coveting fabric is wrong - it needs to be set free!!!!

  27. I was so surprised to see your quilt today, as I started one just like it a few days ago, except it has 6 x 6 blocks and I used Kona! I love the Oakshot, and would have had a very difficult time cutting into it. At least you took pics! I love how the shot cottons give it a depth Kona doesn't have.

  31. Your "pattern" is my favorite for baby quilts. I use left-over strips of pink, blue and pastel prints. They always turn out wonderful and I donate most of them to a local women's shelter. I jealous of your OakShot and may just have to break down and purchase a box!

  33. I love how it is a simple design yet fun. I bet it goes together fast too. I'm guessing you may have sewn strips together first, then cut across them? Anyway, it was a good idea for using the color box!

  39. Hi,
I agree, a feast for the eyes!!! I don't see any of the browns/tans. Did you use them? I would think they would be hard to incorporate, and I might not use them if I were lucky enough to have these gorgeous fabrics!
