Happy New Year and a Scrappy Trip-along

Happy New Year everyone!  It is day one of a new year and I think it is going to be a fabulous one.

My plans for a little quiet time away from the sewing machine over the Christmas to New Year period were thrown in disarray by the #scrappytripalong virus that spread rapidly on Instragram.  Started by Brenda from Pink Castle Fabrics and Megan from Lucy and Norman this Trip Around the World is highly contagious and I am hoping you'll join in too!

This quilt is strip pieced using 6 strips (each strip measuring 2.5 inches x 16.5 inch) to make 12.5 inch blocks.  A very useful tutorial can be found here:

I have enjoyed using my fabric stash for this quilt top to make a very scrappy looking quilt top.  I tried not to over think the color/fabric choices and simply worked on each block individually rather with a focus on the overall color palette of the quilt top.  And it's true, anything goes!

I have pieced 36 blocks and my quilt top measures 72 inches x 72 inches (which I may come to regret when I start basting/quilting).  I am in my element when patchwork piecing and I have a feeling that the humble square will continue to make an appearance in 2013.

Feel like joining in?  Please do!

  6. Lovely. I love the bright, cheerful colours.
The tutorial shows how deceptively simple it is and made me realise that this would also make a great group project, with each person contributing a block ... as long as everyone can sew an even 1/4 inch seam.

  15. The Humble Square ... did you know that the pyramids are built on a square and they are still standing. Love your squares and I think they will still be around for a long time too! Happy new year.

  16. Who knew it was so easy! I've always been afraid to try such small squares, this tutorial makes it look so easy. I have pillows on my sofa that need covering and tons of scraps, might be my New Year's Day project. Love it!

  23. My fingers are itching to start my own! Question is: can I get done the things I *have* to do so I can blow off the things I *ought* to do and get started cutting and sewing?

Also: "virus" is totally the right word--have you ever seen an -along spread so quickly on IG before? Nuts--in the best way!

Yours is gorgeous, as always. Can't wait to see what you'll sew in 2013--you always inspire me! Happy New Year!
