Seaside ~ A Finished Quilt

Another Friday and another finished quilt:
Seaside ~ finished quilt measures 44.5 inches x 56.5 inches

Color is my thing.  And uh yes, fabric is quite possibly my other thing.  I love both!  Combining the two together is a pleasure.  Never work.

It hasn't always been that way.  I have had to work at combining fabrics and colors.  I have taken a few risks and played with my fabric stash often.  I have piled high and edited many a stack of fabrics; arranged and re-arranged what seems like a mountain of different prints/colors. Over time combining fabrics from numerous collections does get easier.

This time was no exception. The Seaside collection by October Afternoon lends itself well to fabric play.  The saturated primary colors can be readily interspersed with classic stash fabrics (like polka dots, stripes and simple graphic prints).
I have finished this quilt in my usual style:  quilting straight lines on both sides of all seam lines as well as stitching a grid of diagonal lines (cross-hatching).  Then completed it by adding a stripey binding ~

I have listed this quilt in my Etsy Store.
You can see more images and all the details here:

As always, thank you for stopping by,
Rita

  1. You're definitely not the only one obsessed with color and have bought 8 or 9 fabrics when only 5 or 6 were needed so that I could edit again once home beyond the in-store editing. Check out my color choices @ www.munchkinquilts.blogspot.com - I've got a chevron quilt growing block by block made of scraps that will be my first quilt to not have a unified color theme.

  3. I love the large black polka dot (on white)! I've always thought it was "cheating" to use only fabrics from one collection. No challenge there! You do a great job of creating a nice mish mash of all the fabrics together.

  15. Thanks for sharing that fabric mixing took practice for you. I always feel like I'm no good at mixing fabric, so you inspire me to just practice practice practice!

  16. The quilt is beautiful! Thank you for sharing your story of how it took you time and practice to mix fabrics. I am encouraged to do the same! I am sure it must help to have a great stash - can I use that as an excuse to buy more fabric? ;)

  17. How do you part with creations that you love? Does charging enough make it work? "If they will pay this amount, then they must love it enough for me to let it go"? Or perhaps, you say to yourself, I have enough quilts. It might also be that you say to yourself, I can make another one exactly the same for myself if I want it that much.

  18. Your quilt is so beautiful, I love all the colors and different prints. I so wish I had more time to spend sewing, I just keep adding to my stash hoping I will have more time to create treasures such as yours. Great job again!

  22. Rita, what size are your squares for the quilt? It is so pretty, and cheery! In comparison to the postage stamp quilt, the squares seem fairly large :-)

  24. I love the bold black and white dot in this quilt as it really keeps your eye moving around the quilt. IMHO it's the fabric that makes this quilt work so well! I always love your color and fabric choices, Rita.

  25. hi rita,
this might seem silly- but is there a pattern for this quilt? or can you tell me the size of the squares and the finished quilt? i really love the simple squares and straight lines and would love to make something similar for my baby girl, but i'm not sure how to find directions or a pattern for something like this?
    can you help me?
