More Broken Dishes

Thank you for all of your kind comments left on the previous post featuring this quilt top!  I really appreciate it.  I never can tell how a quilt is going to be received by my blog readers; although I do know that you ~ just like myself ~ enjoy COLOR!

Today I have some pretty pictures to show you of the progress made over the last day or so.

I have added a final pieced triangle border to all four sides of the quilt.  Really easy to piece and nothing was wasted ~ I've used the small triangle trimmings for the quilt back  ~ herewith a quick snapshot of the  quilt back (quilting as yet unfinished) :

As much as I like the overall design of the tumbling blocks I must say that I this kind of irregular piecing, with  odd angles and off grain pieces of fabric, is not my favorite piecing style.  I wasted much fabric trying to get all of the blocks to fit in at different angles, and although I am glad to have tried such unstructured piecing, I was quite pleased to finish the panel.  More practice required.

I have basted the quilt sandwich and spent quite some time at the machine already.  With a cool start to the day the Winter sunshine pouring through the window and over my work station was very welcome indeed.

I hope you've had a fun sewing day!
Rita

  23. When I saw that top picture I thought that was the final layout. It's interesting to see it on point like that.

  24. I love it!! I just finished a top pieced very similarly and what a job it was. I was using up some leftover fabrics, ran out of them and had to purchase complimentary fabrics. It took a lot of time, but I was happy with it when done.

I haven't quilted mine as yet, but it looks like you are doing a 1/4 inch on each side of your seams. I haven't figured out just how I want to finish mine.

    Thanks for sharing your WIP.

  26. I love this quilt! And the back is a work of art in itself and would make a neat narrow wall hanging.

    Thanks for the inspiration!

AND will you share a tutorial with us on how you pieced the back? Looking at it I was certain it was applique. I have learned my lesson: I should NEVER underestimate you :)

Now on the back - Love the tumbling blocks! But yeah, looks like a pain in the neck! But good for you. :)

  37. One more comment to say that I really like those tumbling blocks on the quilt back. The shadow on that larger block adds a nice touch too.

  38. So beautiful and colorful, I love it!
I love how you made the block on the backside look 3D, very clever!

  39. Oh, how very perfect! I am continually amazed at how you just keep upping your game, especially when sharing your HST love. And, while I'm quite sure you labored long over the tumbling blocks on the back, the end result is a quilt that feels so fresh and playful that I imagine it could/would/will incite forbidden jumping on the bed. This is just one more example of your work that reminds me that the quilts I find most beautiful do not first distract me with skillful construction or technical difficulty but, instead, just open my eyes to color, shape, and feeling. So, now, I want to go jump on a bed! This quilt just makes me smile. Thanks, as ever, for sharing.

  40. At first I thought the first photo was the entire quilt top. Hehehe:D Then I saw the second photo...I love it! The broken dishes design plays tricks on my eyes, but is so pretty to look at. I love the backing. Looks tricky, but well worth the design. Very fun!

  43. Love the traditional tumbling block quilt....BUT I love the irregular tumbling blocks more!!! I think it turned out beautifully!!!

  44. HST's - such a simple thing, but oh so effective!! Love the solids - have used them after seeing how you put "it all together". Very satisfying. Do you use a "proper" walking foot on your Bernina, or do you use the inbuilt dual feed?? Keep up the awesome work and inspiration. Cheers, Dianne

  45. What a novel idea you used for the back - it was, I think, worth the trouble you took; it's gorgeous.

  46. Love the border! It really finishes the quilt nicely. The back is so awesome! What a great idea. It's almost like another quilt in itself.

  47. Really Lovely! can you share how you pieced the back?? I would probably applique such a lovely piece of whimsy.

  48. Wow this is gorgeous! the back looks amazing - great job getting all of those pieces to work just right. The first photo posted makes it look like you set those broken dishes on point with corner-border pieces, and then it's like whoa! look at those awesome borders you added! love it.

  49. As much as it might have been a pain to do, your pieced backing is STUNNING! I love it. Gonna have to try that myself now.

  50. I can see how they would be a pain, but those tumbling blocks definitely have a great effect. Way to push the limits!
