Sunday Stash #76

More of my button stash today and I must say they look rather pretty spread out like this:

Some are old, really old, and others are new -  like recently snipped off my husbands worn out shirts.  I don't actively search for old buttons to add to my collection, and don't even have much of a need for them.  However, I do enjoy occasionally checking out my button stash and having a color play with them.

I just know that I will have a use for them one day (surely), and wonder if you have a button stash (and guard it zealously)?

Enjoy Sunday!

  1. Not sure what it is about buttons that I love so much, especially vintage styles, but I do. In fact I just changed my banner to feature a few of my favourites!
I love your stash! I'd be happy sorting through them for hours :-)

  3. my local thrift store cuts em all off of old clothes that they can't sell so yes I have become a wee bit of a collector! I love em!!

  4. I DO have a button collection to which I also add buttons off defunct shirts, buttons found anywhere and it all started with my mother's button collection so I have some really old ones in there too. It's just delightful when you need a certain type of button, something special, and when you look, there it is!

  5. I'm guilty of a button collection too! (not to mention the threads and fabric mountain! LOL)

  6. I have a button stash, but nothing close to the size of yours!

  7. I love buttons! I have a growing stash, but yours is larger and very nice.

  8. I do! I love them, though I rarely use them. My mother always had a tub of buttons when we were growing up. I also have some older buttons that used to belong to DH's grandfather who was a tailor. Such pretty colors you have!

  9. I mean no offense at all when I say this. The internet has taught me that no matter how much of a stash I have, someone else has more.
I'm terribly jealous of your buttons. I hear Lisa... I love them, though I rarely use them. But there is something SO gratifying when you find just the right button for the project you're on.

    It deserves a *moment*

  10. Yes I do! There's one container full of buttons from thrift store shirts that I cut up for quilts. Then there's the jar of buttons my grandmother had, and that I played with as a little girl. I love the feel of them. You've reminded me it's about time to run my fingers through them again!

Your collection looks great. It'll be fun to see what you'll do with them.

  11. I too have a button stash. I don't even know where it came from but it continues to grow with new additions from worn clothing.

  12. Yes, I have a button stash. And like most of you, it is a mishmash of old, new and very used. I harvest them off anything I can; sometimes I find antique buttons in Etsy that are reasonable. I've used them on quilts quite a bit for this and that. Eyes, flower centers, etc.

Lovely colors you rounded up. *S*

  13. I have buttons. I used to work at a costume warehouse and when old costumes get retired I'd go over them with a stitch ripper and take buttons and trim and ribbon, whatever grabbed my eye. I'm especially fond of mother-of-pearl buttons.

  14. I have a big container full of buttons which I try to incorporate into my sewing projects whenever I can. My daughter and I quite often get them out to look at and sort through. I have them all seperated out into compartments of different colours BUT I recently dropped the box and they became mixed up which I found very distressing. My favourite buttons are flower shaped ones...I just love them and they make such lovely embellishments.

  15. I love my button stash! My youngest (11) loves to grab handfuls of buttons and let them fall through his fingers.

  16. I have a button stash that used to be sorted out by color in spice jars - that is, until my granddaughter discovered how much fun they are to play with! So now they're all mixed up because she can't play with just one color at a time..... ;-)

  17. This is the best use of a button stash I've ever seen: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=244455.0 !!

  18. I remember my grandmother's button stash that I loved. No one knows what happened to it, but I'm trying my best to replace it. It's looking pretty good. Yours is awesome Rita.

  19. I was at Hancock the other day and they had a bunch of buttons on clearance. I was picking through them and I was holding four or five pairs, then I thought to myself, what am I going to use these for? Needless to say, I put them back.

After seeing your fabulous collection of obligation free buttons, I don't feel so bad about wanting them. Next time I go, I will be getting some. :)

  20. Where do you find your cute buttons? Have been looking for a good source for buttons.
    They look awesome

  21. My daughter fondly remembers my big button tin from when she was a girl. Once she even took an old t-shirt, when she was around 11 or so, and sewed big ol' buttons all over it....hey, it taught her a valuable skill !

A couple of weeks ago, I got to get out the old tin and play on the floor with my grandkids, as they discovered some of the same buttons that fascinated their mother.

  22. I'm a button collector too....but a beginner. Anyhow, my button stock is increasing day by day. But i'm sure it's still just quarter of your collection..

  23. I couldn't help grinning when I saw your button collection.
My Mother had a "button tin" - like most spend thrift folks back in the day.
I spent hours and hours playing, sorting, rearranging the buttons from her button tin. It's a fantastic childhood memory!!
I inherited that button tin, and have started a button collection of my own.
    xo
    good stuff!!

  24. I have a stash passed down from my mama. I too have saved buttons off of discarded clothing... but i hardly ever, ever use buttons. But, like you said, someday.... I hate waste!

  25. How fun! When I was little I used to sort all the buttons by color. I gave my mother many quiet moments! LOL

  26. My 4 year old daughter has a stash that she started and continues on our shop hops. I have a bit from my scrapbook supplies - awesome colors. AND I've started snipping them from her old clothes. I don't know if I'll ever use them but they are precious!

I remember playing with my mom's buttons when she was sewing.

    I love buttons!

  28. Love buttons. I'm with you when it comes to finding a need for them - or lack of a need. I HAD a pretty big stash saved up for years - then I accidently had some liquid soap spilled into it - then I threw it all out :(.

  29. That is quite a stash of buttons! I inherited my grandma's stash of buttons. Some I actually remember from clothes she made for me and my family. Can't say I've added much to it, but I won't be giving it away any time soon. I might have to get them out and do a little color play myself! Thanks for the inspiration!

  30. I have an old button tin that I have used for many years now, it is lavender with a picture of lavender flowers on the lid. I add to them when I can but also use them all the time now on my apron and cushion tags. I love your aqua ones!

  31. Your buttons are a sight to behold. We bought a house from a horder who left our house full of treasures....we used to say two of anything was a collection. It was just lucky that my husband and I were pretty much the same and loved what we'd inherited. I scored a lovely tin and nescafe jars full of buttons. I actually used 6 last week for a costume for my little boy! Sometimes I love to look at how old the tin and the coffee jars are! Sometimes it's about the buttons. I love your buttons they're so much brighter than mine! But a collection nonetheless!

  32. Adore your stash! Like you I have a stash of buttons that I don't use, but perhaps one day...! xo

  33. My button stash is a third generation one. I have buttons my grandmother collected in the early 1900's. There are buttons from military uniforms, pins and all sorts of things.
I have them sorted in colours in quart bottles and the decorate my sewing room. I would never part with them, I wonder which off-spring wants to inherit them?

  34. I enjoy buttons too even though I rarely use them. That is an impressive stash!

  35. Oh no! What about zippers? I have those too and when ever I need one I have go and buy a new one because I don´t have the right one...
I too used to play with my grandmothers button collection...

  36. What a fun job for kids to sort into colors. I picture little candy jars filled with buttons of different colors. But where to use them hmmmm...

  37. Inspiration indeed! I've long wanted to make a quilt where instead of being tied it is loads of buttons. Not cosy, per se, but it would be lovely to pet and look at.

  38. I do NOT have a button stash = ( but if I did I would hope it would look very much like YOURS!

  39. Of course I have a button stash although my are sorted by color and hoarded for some unknown reason!

  40. I finally scored my very own button stash. My buttons fitted in a little tiny jam jar before. Now I have a box full of buttons. They were in a second hand sewing cabinet that I purchased and I must say I had a lot of fun going through them all! Everyone needs a button stash!

  41. I definitely have a button stash. We cleaned out my Grandparents house and I found lots of quite old buttons. They were everywhere. I finally started putting them in containers and ended up with about 7 good sized tins. Next I sorted them by color and washed and dried them. I have them displayed in old canning jars, most that we found in the house too. They look really cool on a shelf in my sewing room. I do use them, but very sparingly. I will relinquish them once in a while for a special garment or a purse button. Of course I also have lots of new buttons that I have collected for using when making garments!

  42. like so many people out there (i know i'm not alone heheh) I have a major crush on buttons. how i wish my stash would be like yours. i swear, i've never been the envious type but... these pictures have me mouthwatering... i have so few buttons compared to this, that i really can't call it a stash...

  43. My great grandmother had a large cookie tin FULL of old buttons. She collected them throughout her 92 years of life. She passed over 18 years ago and I was very close to her. A few years ago I started making purses. My grandmother hauled out the old tin that had belonged to her mother. My mother, aunts, and I spent an afternoon going through them and I took most of them home with me. It's hard to part with so many of them, but the idea of vintage buttons that once belonged to my favorite person going on something that I made by hand makes it worth using them. I continue to "collect" whenever something catches my eye, but nothing beats Grammie's old buttons.
