In a Spin

I have finished the quilt top pieced from reclaimed vintage bed linen and some of my own stashed striped fabrics.  Although the pictures are quite difficult to look at without feeling nauseated, let me reassure that the actual quilt is far easier on the eyes.
.

To make this quilt you really do need a good variety of striped fabrics, not just variety of color but also a variety of the width of the stripe printed on the fabric.  The wider striped fabrics are bold and prominent; these blocks are immediately obvious to the eye.

I have also added some blocks pieced from light/neutral colored striped fabrics.  These blocks recede into the background of the quilt top and  help tone down the busy effects of the narrower striped fabrics.

Although this quilt is not inspired by any other quilt in particular, this fussy cutting and piecing technique is by no means an original idea.  Perhaps we've not often seen vintage bed linen reclaimed in this manner, although  as you can see their potential has certainly been under-rated.

More progress pictures soon.

  9. I love this! Very cool! I know it was very labor intensive to match all of those stripes. I am making a quilt for my son with plaids and stripes and matching the stripes has made sewing it more tedious.

  13. This is a quilt where the scale of the stripes has become one of the most important factors, rather than the color value of the fabric. Once again, you did an amazing job.

  46. What a gorgeous creation! For me who initially is a crochetoholic this is a quilt version of the traditional granny squares in crochet. Fantastic. Such a great idea with using the stripes. I am really blown away. Well done.

  47. Sorry I know this is an older post but I was looking through for inspiration as I have a pile of stripe fabrics and not a clue what to make with them!
I would really like to make this quilt!
Can I ask how many fabrics did it take to get this amount of variation into the quilt? Right now I have 6 or 7 prints in FQ and half yards so wondering if I would need to add 1 or 2 more to take into account fussy cutting and mix of prints.
    Thanks
    Sarah
