Just ONE Layer Cake ~ A Quilt Pattern

Some time ago I stashed my first layer cake, Dream On by Urban Chiks for Moda.  It has been quietly waiting for inspiration to strike and I have finally challenged myself to make a quilt with just ONE layer cake and a single solid fabric.

Take 1 - A Layer Cake Quilt
Quilt measures 50.5 inches x 62.5 inches

I quickly learned that there wasn't much room for experimentation with my Layer Cake fabrics, and worked out really easy (and quick) cutting and sewing technique to ensure that no fabric was wasted.   When all was said and done, there were a handful of scraps leftover.

This quilt has been quilted with diagonal lines (again!) from edge to edge, a sharp and clean look that I am still loving.  Less is more.

I had so much fun working just how to get the most out of my Layer Cake that I have written a full pattern for this - the Take 1 ~ A Layer Cake Quilt.

You can find the Take 1 ~ A Layer Cake Quilt  Pattern in my Etsy Store

The pattern (a pdf file) fabric requirements can be substituted with any other Layer Cake or scrap fabric.   The pattern  includes detailed tutorials and step by step cutting and piecing photographs.

Patterns purchased from my Etsy Store are available for immediate download (upon payment being made).

All Red Pepper Quilts Patterns (pdf files) are now also available here:

Thank you for stopping by and Happy Stitching!

  1. Great idea - for those of us without the cash to buy yards and yards of fabulous designer fabrics - I think layer cake + solids is a great way to go.

  2. Beautiful quilt and wonderful combination of layer cake and one solid. The green and orange is a wonderful fresh look.

  3. I'm sitting here in the early morning, groggy from another hot, sleepless night in Southern California. I have your blog on my Google reader and love seeing all that you create. So seeing this lovely quilt this early (hot) morning is like a fresh piece of cool luscious fruit being handed to me through my computer screen. You made my day. Keep up the good work!

  22. This is such a nice quit. I have a green very similar to this shade you used. I thought it was so out of my comfort zone. This quilt, however, I like a lot, so thanks for showing me a way to go.

  29. Wow, I love it!

I really enjoy not having any scraps left at the end of a project. I'm not much of a scrap hoarder (anything smaller than a charm square goes in a bag to give to quilty friends who want them!), so it's a nice clean finish to a project!

  38. What a gorgeous quilt. I really want to make one, I haven't yet though. I am thinking of Amy Butlers sexy hexy for Christmas for my hubby but i might just have to practice with this one!

  39. Oooh, she's a beauty! I loooove the lime green -- beautiful job!

  40. Kudos Rita...I have been less than thrilled with precuts because you end up with SO many prints, even though they all match, and the resulting quilt (charm/jelly roll/whatever)is just too visually busy.

Combining the precut pack with a single solid was brilliant! Hmmmm...maybe I should take another look at those charm packs I put away! I buy them to preview lines, choosing what to buy online...but never had a way to use them after. Now I do. Thanks!
